IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A Davenport woman accused of attempting to flush her newborn down a toilet and leaving the child in a trash can at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has taken a plea deal. The Gazette reports 24-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader entered Alford pleas to charges of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person and child endangerment in exchange for the drop of her most serious charge, attempted murder. An Alford plea is when a defendant doesn’t admit guilt, but acknowledges that there is likely enough evidence for a conviction.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – An Ottumwa caretaker admitted to having sex with a mentally disabled patient during her shift Monday. KTVO-TV reports Ottumwa police arrested 26-year-old Cynthia Kopp Wednesday and charged her with Dependent Adult Abuse. Kopp was a professionally employed caretaker when she had consensual sex with the adult victim more than once.

HAMPTON, IA (IRN) – A man who held a woman against her will for at least 12 hours at his home, who also repeatedly hit her, used a taser on her, and let his dog bite her, will spend life in prison without parole. KCRG-TV reports Charles Albright of Meservey was sentenced Friday on charges of willful injury and first degree kidnapping.

BUCHANAN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A crash between a motorcycle and a truck in Buchanan County sent one to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by helicopter. The Iowa State Patrol reports a motorcycle driven by 35-year-old Gregory Fernau of Hazelton, tried to pass a truck as the truck was trying to turn left. Fernau’s motorcycle hit the driver’s side door of the truck. He was not wearing a helmet.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Approximately 30 FBI agents raided a Catholic worker house in Des Moines in relation to a federal investigation regarding the vandalism of the Dakota Access Pipeline construction project. KCCI-TV reports the raid started before dawn at the Berrigan House where Jessica Reznicek and Ruby Montoya are staying. The women claimed responsibility last month for setting several pieces of construction equipment on fire and damaging pipeline valves with torches.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new trail is taking shape in Des Moines, but it’s not a typical bike path, according to WHO-TV. The paint is drying for Art Route Des Moines, which is a six-mile trail leading visitors to public art. Along the trail are 87 pieces of art on sidewalks and crosswalks. The trail stretches from the state capitol to the Meredith Corporation.

CLIVE, IA (IRN) – Iowa Lottery officials say someone who bought a Powerball ticket in Avoca has won a $1 million prize. The ticket purchased at Wings America Travel Centre matched the first five numbers drawn Wednesday but missed on the Powerball number.

CENTERVILLE, IA (IRN) – A rollover crash in Appanoose County claimed the life of a Centerville teen Thursday. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and found a 1999 Dodge Ram rolled over in a ditch.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – An 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling off her bike in Dubuque County. KCRG-TV reports the girl fell while riding down a grassy hill. She was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she is in critical condition.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – An apartment building had to be evacuated Thursday afternoon in Mason City, according to KIMT-TV. Apartment resident Brandy Blakely says she smelled rubber burning, and then saw smoke and flames. She and others yelled “fire,” and evacuated the building. Several doors had to be broken down to rescue people. Blakely says she’s lost everything. No injuries were reported.

WARREN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A man led Norwalk police on a chase at speeds of over 100 mph Thursday, according to WHO-TV. He’s in jail after stopping to ask directions, and running out of gas.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The biggest boar is drawing thousands of visitors at the Iowa State Fair. KCCI-TV reports Big Buck weighed in at 1,192 pounds. The Hampshire boar is from the eastern Iowa town of Ryan, population around 350. Big Buck’s owners, McDonald Acres, also won the competition in 2015 with Big Mac. They said the secret to their success is in the “secret sauce” that they feed their animals.

CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – An 8-year-old died after the ATV he was driving crashed on a farm in Grundy County. KWWL-TV reports Micah Jones was driving an ATV on a farm near Cedar Falls Tuesday morning when the ATV went over a retaining wall and flipped, killing the boy. Another 8-year-old on the ATV suffered minor injuries.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A Lake Mills man has been charged in a case of alleged “revenge porn.” KIMT-TV reports police arrested 27-year-old William Alan Eldridge on an outstanding warrant from Minnesota. Eldridge is accused of posting naked images online of a woman from Kiester, MN. He’s charged with non-consensual dissemination of private sexual images, which is punishable in Minnesota by up to three years in prison and a fine of $5,000.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A man was shot in Dubuque overnight, according to KCRG-TV. Police say the suspect and the victim knew each other. It was all caught on security camera footage, and police are looking for the suspect.

AMES, IA (IRN) – Iowa State University undergraduates could face a 7% tuition increase per year for at least the next five years. Interim president Ben Allen unveiled the plan Wednesday. Currently, tuition for in-state undergrads is $7,456, meaning under the proposal, tuition would be $10,457 by fall of 2022. The plan assumes no increase in support by the Iowa Legislature.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines in the process of being torn down to be replaced with a bigger and better version. Hubbell Realty intends to start construction of the new facility in September.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa is among 11 states on the shortlist to host a $1.6 billion Toyota-Mazda production facility, according to the Wall Street Journal. Toyota and Mazda made the announcement last week that they would be joining together to develop the factory in the United States, much to the delight of auto-parts manufacturers and other businesses. The plant could bring as many as 4,000 jobs to the state.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The founder of a Des Moines anti-violence group is behind bars today on a charge of child endangerment. KCCI-TV reports 46-year-old Mothers Against Violence founder Calvetta Williams is charged with child endangerment causing bodily injury. Williams was babysitting a child and the parents noticed the girl had several marks and scratches on her face, arms and eye. Williams had no explanation when asked about the child’s injuries.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A report is accusing the Eldora Boys State Training School of using damaging punishment methods on boys. Disability Rights Iowa claims residents are often put in seclusion rooms or bonded to what is called “the wrap” bed as punishment. DHS Director Jerry Foxhoven says it’s not punishment — “these are kids who may have killed somebody. These are kids who have a bad criminal history. When they become violent and put other kids at risk, we are going to try and protect the other kids.” Governor Reynolds says she is looking into it.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Racist hate speech in the form of fliers is popping up in Davenport neighborhoods and parking lots. WQAD-TV reports the flyers are the responsibility of the “National Alliance,” a white supremacist group that has been around since the 1970’s.

PEOSTA, IA (IRN) – A vehicle fire that quickly spread to a commercial building in the Dubuque County town of Peosta Tuesday caused more than $1 million in damage, according to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. The building was evacuated and no one was injured.

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – Four Marshalltown kids got a big surprise after saving their father’s life. KCRG-TV reports Matt Gannaway was tearing down a shed when it fell on him. His kids, ages 6 to 13, jumped into action, calling 911, and then lifting the shed off of him. They were honored with a certificate of recognition from the Marshalltown fire chief Tuesday.
