SIOUX RAPIDS – Governor Kim Reynolds and Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow announced Melanie Bloom, a 16-year veteran agriculture teacher, as the 2025 Iowa Teacher of the Year during an assembly at Sioux Central Community School District in Sioux Rapids. Bloom is a full-time agriculture and FFA advisor, and was selected from nine finalists who were named last month as Iowa’s first-ever Regional Teachers of Year representing all education regions of the state. The Iowa Teacher of the Year award was first established in 1958.WASHINGTON D.C. – Both of Iowa’s senators met with two of the more contentious nominees for leadership positions in President-Elect Donald Trump’s second administration. Senator Chuck Grassley released his endorsement for potential FBI Director Kash Patel following what he called a vote of “no-confidence” in current director Christopher Wray. Senator Joni Ernst met with Army Veteran and former Fox News host Pete Hegseth following Republican criticism of holding our her potential vote for his nomination. Ernst called the meeting “productive.” Votes on nominations will take place after inauguration day on January 20th. IOWA – An organization intends to lobby lawmakers at the Iowa Statehouse ahead of their new general assembly beginning in January about driving with cellular devices and creating legislation to address it. The End Distracted Driving Iowa Coalition includes dozens of organizations from law enforcement, healthcare, labor, transportation, insurance, and state agencies. The group cites Iowa DOT data that shows distracted driving crashes have increased by 43% in the past decade. It also references states with laws that have seen reductions in such incidents.

IOWA – Governor Kim Reynolds announced the extension of a disaster proclamation for Sioux and Palo Alto Counties effective immediately through January 7th. The USDA has confirmed positive cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in both counties. This proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection. The recent bird flu detections do not present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products. If producers suspect signs of HPAI in their flocks, they should contact their veterinarian immediately.  MUSCATINE – A multi-county pursuit resulted in two fatalities Sunday afternoon on Highway 218. KCII Radio reports a crash took the lives of two people near Mile Marker 78 in Washington County at 3:51 p.m., according to the Iowa State Patrol. The Muscatine Police Department received multiple reports of a female driving through the community and firing a weapon at others. When that woman did not stop, she led police on a chase through Louisa County and eventually toward the area of the crash. IOWA – Both the Cyclones and Hawkeyes have one more football game to play before the 2024 season ends. The No. 18-ranked Iowa State football team is heading to Orlando to take on No. 15 Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on December 28th. It marks the Cyclones’ seventh bowl game in eight seasons, and comes after they lost to Arizona State in the Big 12 Championship game Saturday morning with a College Football Playoff Bid on the line. The Hawkeyes are traveling to Nashville on December 30th to take on No. 19 Missouri in the Music City Bowl.AMES – An Iowa State Cyclones football player was arrested for alleged operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The Des Moines Register reports Jaylon Jackson was taken into custody at 2:38 a.m. on Sunday morning by Ames Police. The graduate transfer has gained 429 total yards of offense in 2024.

IOWA – Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset today in honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Pearl Harbor was attacked 83 years ago. 2,403 service members and civilians were killed. Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state.  OSCEOLA – Clarke County emergency responders identified the man who called into 911 for a man suffering from a gunshot wound and the sheriff’s office arrested him for an alleged attack on that man. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office charged 32-year-old George William Douglas of Woodburn with attempted murder, going armed with intent, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Emergency responders arrived on Tuesday afternoon in rural Clarke County and found 35-year-old Tyler Scott Sutton of New Virginia in critical condition suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

WEBSTER COUNTY – Voters in Webster County will attempt to add an essential services tax in March. KCCI-TV reports the county just has one certified, full-time service in Fort Dodge. If approved, a levy of 75 cents per $1,000 of value would be used to fund ambulances and other needs. Of the counties who attempted a similar move on the November 5th election, seven successfully cleared the 60% threshold of approval to move the measures forward. Floyd County was the only one who had a majority of voters reject the levy. IOWA – Shotgun deer season kicks off on Saturday for the first of two seasons in Iowa, according to the Iowa DNR. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources estimates 100,000 hunters participate annually. This year, the season runs from December 7th through the 11th, and again from the 14th through the 12th. ARLINGTON, TX – The No. 16 Iowa State Cyclones will make their second appearance in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game Saturday when it faces No. 12 Arizona State for the first time. The Cyclones, winners of three straight, and Sun Devils are set to kick off at AT&T Stadium at 11 a.m. on ABC. Iowa State reached 10 wins for the first time in the program’s 133-year history when it defeated Kansas State at home last weekend. The Cyclones are looking to win their first conference championship since 1912, one of two conference titles in school history (the other being 1911). It would guarantee them a spot in the upcoming College Football Playoff, expanded to 12 teams for the first time in 2024.

WEST DES MOINES – A West Des Moines woman was arrested for the death of a young child on Halloween night. WHO-13 reports 21-year-old Kayla Bevar faces charges of child endangerment resulting in death and neglect of a dependent person. On October 31st, several West Des Moines emergency agencies responded to a report of a drowning, finding a 20-month-old child in a bathtub. Bevar told police she put the child in the tub at 6:30 that evening but fell asleep shortly after. JEWELL – The CEO of a health insurance company killed in Manhattan on Wednesday morning was an Iowa native. KCCI-TV reports Brian Thompson with United Health Care was a 1993 graduate of South Hamilton High School and had a diploma from the University of Iowa. Thompson was shot in what was believed to be a targeted attack while attending a conference. WATERLOO – A member of the Waterloo City Council is not resigning from her elected position after an alleged theft. KCRG-TV reports Nia Wilder is charged with fourth degree theft for alleged stealing of items from a Walmart. Police say Nia was stopped on her way out of the store by trying to use an app to scan items and then removing them before paying.
