DES MOINES – A Des Moines officer was shot and a suspect is dead after an exchange this morning. KCCI-TV reports police were responding to a possible domestic incident. The department says they engaged in a chase and a suspect shot at pursuing officers. He was struck in the chest in the exchange. Neither person impacted has been idenfitied. IOWA – Yet another round of severe weather knocked out power to hundreds of residents this morning, one day after heavy rain soaked much of the state. The National Weather Service issued several warnings for winds in excess of 70 MPH. Overnight Sunday, a tornado warning impacted Polk and Jasper Counties and some communities in Iowa have seen over five inches of rain over the past few days. Extreme heat is expected through Wednesday, with heat index values approaching 110 to 115 degrees in the afternoon and evening. POLK COUNTY – An Iowa Hawkeyes football player is the second arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated this summer. KCRG-TV reports Pleasant Hill resident Cade Broud was arrested in Polk County early Saturday morning. Police say he was twice the legal limit after a traffic stop. Receiver Kaleb Brown was arrested in June for OWI charges.

DES MOINES – One of the top potential vice presidential candidate choices for presumptive Democratic Nominee Kamala Harris took aim at the GOP’s pick for VP at a fundraiser in Des Moines on Saturday. KCCI-TV reports Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear targeted J.D. Vance as part of a speech at the annual Liberty and Justice Celebration. Beshear also aimed to get Iowa Democrats excited about the upcoming election, representing his own victories in a deeply Republican state. BUCHANAN COUNTY – One person has died in a crash in Buchanan County on Saturday. KCRG-TV reports a collision as two vehicles hit at the same time at a rural intersection police say was obscured by high corn. Eighty-year-old Michael John Puff of Oelwein was not wearing a seat belt and died from his injuries. MINNESOTA – Abortion care providers in Minnesota are preparing for an influx of patients as a strict ban of the medical procedure takes effect in Iowa this week. Minnesota Public Radio reports the director of Planned Parenthood North Central States and other clinics are working to accommodate what they believe will be an increase in visits as a fetal heartbeat law signed by Governor Kim Reynolds goes into place, just over a year after a special session was called to pass it and the Iowa Supreme Court ruled it was allowed to proceed this June.  

RED OAK – A man is in custody following an alleged stabbing at an apartment complex in Red Oak. The Iowa Department of Investigation reports that Red Oak Police responded to a 911 call for assistance Thursday night for an individual requesting assistance. Officers found a man suffering from a stab wound, who was subsequently treated for his injuries. Thirty-two-year-old Miguel Ramone Martinez was arrested and charged with Willful Injury, a Class C Felony. CLIVE – A Des Moines man has been charged with attempted murder for an alleged stabbing in Clive. WHO-13 reports 62-year-0old Wa’il Muhannad is in custody following an early Friday morning incident. Police say they found 28-year-old Dakarai Jackman outside of a hotel suffering from apparent stab wounds, and he is expected to recover. Muhannad is accused of fleeing the scene on foot but was detained quickly after. FREMONT COUNY – Parents in Fremont County are in custody after they were accused of neglecting a toddler. KCCI-TV reports that police accuse Dustin Perry and Lindsey Hamilton, both 26, of keeping a four-year-old in a mixture of both animal and human feces. Officers claim they found multiple changes at the child’s home in Shenendoah. LANSING – A police department in eastern Iowa has lost its staff, leaving two Iowa communities without officers. KCRG-TV reports the Iowa State Patrol and Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for patrolling Lansing and New Albin. The City of Lansing lost its chief and two officers in short order.

WAUKEE – A Kansas man was sentenced this week to just over 19 years in federal prison for transportation of child pornography from his previous home in Iowa.  Thirty-three-year old Derek Levi Hendrickson transported three internet capable computer devices across state lines in September 2022 when he moved to Waukee. Those devices – two cell phones and a laptop computer – contained thousands of images and videos of child pornography. At the time of his offense, Hendrickson was a registered sex offender due to a 2015 Kansas state conviction. MASON CITY – A Mason City woman was killed after she was hit by a vehicle in the community Wednesday evening. The Iowa State Patrol reports a juvenile was driving a GMC Envoy and struck 42-year-old Jennifer Dawn Buls-Vrba. Several agencies are investigating the cause. MARSHALLTOWN – A middle school in Marshalltown could be on the path toward renovation ahead of its century birthday. KCCI-TV reports residents are working to get a ballot measure on the November ballot to update Miller Middle School. The district says millions of dollars in renovations are needed to update the facility, especially as it relates to air conditioning and outdated mechanical systems.    

LINN COUNTY – A quadruple murder trial is on hold for a psychiatrist’s evaluation of the suspect accused of killing four people in June. KCRG-TV reports 34-year-old Luke Truesdell of Marion was arrested after three of those individuals were found dead and a fourth was found gravely wounded from an apparent attack with a metal pipe. Attorneys claim Truesdell may be suffering from a mental disorder. A follow-up hearing will be held in August. DES MOINES – Additional layoffs are on the docket for a major agricultural manufacturer in Iowa. KCCI-TV reports John Deere will reduce additional workforce. The company cites increased costs and declining sales. There was no number given, but some impacted employees told the TV station they had received their notice on Wednesday. JASPER COUNTY – One person died in a head-on collision in Jasper County. WHO-13 reports the crash was reported south of Newton on a county road. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office is unsure as to why a vehicle driven by 41-year-old Michael Croy crossed the centerline, but he died as a result from his injuries; the other driver was hurt, but not seriously.
