AMES, IA (IRN) – A driver was hospitalized Monday after hitting several cars in Ames, according to the Ames Tribune. Police began pursuing the vehicle after witnessing it weaving in and out of its lane. The driver then struck three cars before veering into the opposite lane and striking another vehicle head-on. The driver was the only one seriously injured

WASHINGTON, DC (IRN) – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced $349 million in funding for 15 infrastructure projects for rural electric cooperatives and utilities in 13 states. This includes a $44 million loan to Eastern Iowa Light & Power Cooperative.

HAMPTON, IA (IRN) – The DNR has identified the source of a fish kill in Maynes Creek near Hampton. The kill was traced to a discharge of egg washwater from The Good Eggs, a layer operation. DNR investigators found high levels of ammonia in the stream, and are calculating the number of fish killed and will monitor the cleanup.

DES MOINES (IRN) – Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent in June from 3.8 percent last month.  The state’s jobless rate was 4.4 percent one year ago.  The U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 5.3 percent in June.   Retail job growth is particularly high, with an estimated 3,000 retail jobs added last month in Iowa.

DES MOINES (IRN) – A Polk County jury found 52-year-old Eddie Tipton of Norwalk guilty on two counts of fraud, according to WHO-TV. Tipton was charged with committing fraud to rig the Hot Lotto game to win millions. Tipton tampered with lottery computer equipment to pick the winning lottery numbers. He was the information security director for the lottery at the time.

BENTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) –  A man died late Monday night when he was hit by a car on Highway 30 in Benton County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Michael Moore, 61, of Vinton had pulled off the highway and had left his vehicle when he was hit by a Malibu driven by 18-year-old Cody Bergom of Belle Plaine.

UNION COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The U.S. Marshals Service is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Chad Kosinski.  KMEG-TV reports he’s wanted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office for violation of his parole after a drug conviction.  Kosinski should be easy to spot. He’s 29 years old, 6’08” tall, and weighs 280 lbs.

ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND (IRN) – Iowan Zach Johnson won the British Open in a dramatic four-hole playoff yesterday. Johnson was born in Iowa City, raised in Cedar Rapids, and attended Drake University. He’s won 12 times on the PGA Tour, and in 2007 won the Masters Tournament. He’s now one of 14 players to win the Masters and British Open during their careers. Twelve of them are in the World Golf Hall of Fame, including Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus.
