DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines woman has been sentenced to prison for filing a false tax return. Julilath Kouangvan (COW-ahn-gun) was sentenced to 14 months in prison for failing to report funds to the IRS. Kouangvan solicited investment funds from individuals by promising a high rate of return. Unbeknownst to those involved, the money was not invested. She was also ordered to pay over half a million dollars in restitution.

LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Firefighters from several departments responded Tuesday night to a fire near Central City in Linn County, according to KCRG-TV. Investigators determined the fire started in a camper, but spread to a house. One person in the house was treated for smoke inhalation, one firefighter was treated for a leg injury, and another for a dog bite.

MOLINE, IL (IRN) – John Deere & Company released quarterly earnings Wednesday morning showing worldwide net sales and revenues have decreased 25 percent. The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports weakness in global markets for farm and construction equipment has lead to a decline in sales and earnings. John Deere has multiple manufacturing plants in Iowa.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – West Des Moines based Hy-Vee announced Tuesday that despite a recent USDA decision to grant permission for genetically engineered salmon to be sold in the United States, their stores will not sell it. The company says genetically engineered seafood has no place in its stores, as they only sell seafood safe for consumption that has been harvested or raised in a responsible manner.

DES MOINES (IRN) – Officials have filed charges against the driver involved in a fatal crash Monday morning in Des Moines, according to WHO-TV. 24-year-old Troy Mure, Jr. has been charged with vehicular homicide by reckless driving, vehicular homicide by operating while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated. 22-year-old Scalicity Perez was killed in the crash. She is the mother of four. Mure is in jail.

SCOTT COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An Eldridge man has been accused of exposing his kids to meth for the second time. KWQC-TV reports 34-year-old Nolan Michael Dufloth was arrested in August of 2014 and was on probation for exposing his children to meth. Dufloth now faces additional charges. Also arrested was 31-year-old Danielle Vance. Vance allegedly watched Dufloth’s two young children while he would make meth in the garage.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A terrifying case of road rage happened Monday in Waterloo. KWWL-TV reports an Iowa man is being charged after he followed a woman for miles then hit her car repeatedly with a crowbar in a parking lot. 39-year-old Joshua Dale is charged with third degree criminal mischief. Tali Stevens was in the car with her 10-year-old daughter she had just picked up from school. Stevens said Dale screamed at her that she had “cut him off.”

LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s road system will shrink in the future, according to the head of Iowa’s Department of Transportation, Paul Trombino. KCRG-TV reports Trombino says it’s not affordable for the state to maintain Iowa’s current system and it’s not necessary to do so. Many rural landowners and farmers disagree, saying rural roads are needed for agricultural production. According to the DOT Iowa has 114,000 miles of roadway.
