IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Police are investigating a series of instances of counterfeit currency involving fake $100 dollar bills in Iowa City. KCRG-TV reports $3,000 in fake bills have been recovered so far. Iowa City police suggest businesses use a counterfeit bill detection pen to make sure that bills are legitimate.

ALTOONA, IA (IRN) – Rescue crews were called to a construction site in Altoona this morning after a trench collapsed on a worker and killed him. KCCI-TV reports it happened near Adventureland. The Medical Examiner was on scene and crews have recovered the body. The name has not been released.

HIGH RIDGE, MI (IRN) – Forty-five Iowa National Guard soldiers are returning to Iowa today. WHO-TV reports the soldiers were deployed to a Missouri town where severe flooding knocked out the water treatment plant. Soldiers have spent the past six days purifying enough water for the entire town, and their mission is now complete.

DELAWARE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Delaware County man accidentally shot and killed himself after euthanizing an aggressive bull on a farm outside of Dundee on Tuesday. KWWL-TV reports 57-year-old Randall Kelchen had used the shotgun to euthanize the bull. As he was climbing over the gate to get out of the barnyard, the shotgun went off, striking and killing him instantly.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A former Iowa mayor who resigned after accusations of inappropriate conduct with children is now facing rape charges in Kansas City. The Des Moines Register reports Jeremy Filbert, who resigned as Mitchellville’s mayor last April, is facing multiple charges of assaulting victims less than 14-years-old. Filbert ran for the Iowa State Senate in District 15 as a Republican in 2014.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A 56-year-old man was arrested after he attacked a man with a sword Sunday. The Quad-City Times reports that David Ward is charged with going armed with intent and assault while displaying a weapon. Ward was arguing with two people Sunday night at a Davenport residence when he left and returned shortly with a 30-inch sword that had a 21-inch sharpened blade. Ward swung the sword several times at one of the men, cutting him on the hand.

MARSHALLTOWN, IA (IRN) – A Marshalltown man is celebrating the memory of his wife and seeking to have a little fun by holding a “Shirley party” at the city’s senior citizens center. KCCI-TV reports 82-year-old Laverne Pille decided to hold the party Thursday in honor of his late wife, Shirley. Pille says his wife used to occasionally attend theme-parties where only women named Shirley were invited. Pille hopes up to 100 Shirleys will join the party, adding he knows the name is common among older people who were named after 1930s child star Shirley Temple.
