DAVIS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – An arrest has been made in a Davis County Death investigation. 16-year-old Michael Thomas Goodwin, Jr. was charged with 1st Degree Murder, a Class A felony in the death of his father, Michael Thomas Goodwin, Sr. No other information has been released.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Department of Public Health officials report Monday that flu cases are increasing in Iowa right now. Flu season in Iowa typically peaks in late January or February. All three flu viruses covered by this year’s vaccines are currently circulating in Iowa. It’s not too late to get a flu shot.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A woman in her 30’s found lying unresponsive outside a Mason City strip mall late Thursday night was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. The Mason City Globe-Gazette reports a passer-by reported the woman was lying on the sidewalk. The investigation is ongoing.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A local firefighter is in the hospital after being injured in a early morning fire. WOI-TV reports West Des Moines firefighters were called to the fire around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. When crews got there the house was engulfed in flames. The house collapsed and the firefighter was injured when an exterior wall fell and struck him. The house is a total loss and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

DES MOINES (IRN) – It’s a new year and a new session for the Iowa State Legislature. KCCI-TV reports several Iowa lawmakers made stops Sunday afternoon at the Capitol as they prepared to start the 2016 legislative session today. Among the issues to be considered are K-12 public education, and the Governor’s move toward private management of the state Medicaid system. It’s expected to be a contentious and partisan session.

MADISON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One man is dead following a fatal car crash late Saturday night.
WHO-TV reports the Madison County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle accident near Winterset. Upon arrival, deputies found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the vehicle, 48-year-old John Eller of Winterset, was pronounced dead at the scene. No one in the second vehicle was injured. It appears the vehicle driven by Eller hit the back of the other one.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Five teenagers are facing felony charges after Waterloo police say they robbed a food delivery driver after calling in an order. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports officers responded to a robbery in progress at a vacant house. Police said when a driver from the China King restaurant delivered to the house, the five teens robbed him of money and food. The teens used a handgun in the incident.

DES MOINES (IRN) – When Linda Upmeyer gavels in the Iowa House of Representatives today, it will be an historic day. Upmeyer, a Republican from Clear Lake, will become the first woman to serve as speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives. And she will assume the same speaker’s seat from which her father, Del Stromer, governed 34 years ago. It’s believed Stromer and Upmeyer are the first father-daughter duo to serve as a state’s House speaker in the nation’s history.
