DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An elderly person in northwest Iowa has died from the West Nile virus, marking the first Iowa death due to exposure to the virus since 2010. Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health only identified the victim as an elderly individual who was 81 years of age or older.

HAMBURG, IA (IRN) – A 14-year-old boy has been killed in the crash of an all-terrain vehicle in southwest Iowa. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says the accident occurred late Monday afternoon in a soybean field about three miles east of Hamburg.

DES MOINES, IA – A 14-year-old boy who is a student at Roosevelt High School was shot in the head in downtown Des Moines yesterday. KCCI-TV reports the boy was transported to Methodist Medical Center by private vehicle. He’s in critical condition. A potential crime scene at a downtown bank is being investigated in relation to the shooting.

SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – A car crashed into a stopped school bus near the Linn County town of Springville yesterday afternoon, according to KCRG-TV. Six students and a driver were on the bus. One child went to the hospital with minor injuries. The female driver of the car had to be extracted from the vehicle, and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Vinton woman has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge connected to the fatal accidental shooting of a 14-year-old girl. KGAN-TV reports Robyn Merchant provided a rifle to her 16-year-old son, who she knew used marijuana. A teen other than the her son was handling the gun when it fired, hitting Emma Redlinger. She died four days later.

DYERSVILLE, IA (IRN) – The owners of the Field of Dreams movie site near Dyersville say that for the first time they will allow tours of the house that overlooks the famous baseball field. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports the group “Go the Distance Baseball” announced Monday it would open the house, which was used as a backdrop for much of the 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner. Approximately 100,000 people visit the location annually.
