NEWTON, IA (IRN) – Two armed men stole medications from a nursing home in Newton early Sunday morning. The incident happened at Nelson Manor Nursing Home. Police report two men carrying handguns entered and stole medications before running out of the building.

BLACK HAWK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office says it’s responded to a rash of burglaries over the last several weeks. Authorities are urging residents to take precaution and lock their homes, buildings and vehicles. The sheriff’s office says the burglaries have primarily happened in machine sheds, farm buildings and vehicles.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A car going the wrong way on Interstate 35 in West Des Moines crashed into another car, killing both drivers early Sunday. KCCI-TV reports the crash happened just before 2 a.m. One car was southbound in the interstate’s northbound lanes when it collided with the other car.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – The Justice Department is sending a federal hate crimes lawyer to Iowa to help prosecute a man charged with killing a transgender teenager last year. The New York Times reports the case involves 23-year-old Jorge Sanders-Galvez. He is charged with killing 16-year-old Kedarie Johnson in Burlington in March 2016. Johnson’s relatives believe the shooting was a hate crime.

FORT MADISON, IA (IRN) – A staff member at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison was assaulted Saturday. WQAD-TV reports the unit was locked down after the assault. The staff member was taken to the hospital for treatment, and they have since been released.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (IRN) – Former Hawkeye quarterback C.J. Beathard is now the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Beathard nearly led the San Francisco 49ers to a comeback win on the road Sunday, and when the game was over head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that the rookie would be the team’s new starter. In his first NFL appearance, Beathard entered the game with the 49ers behind 17-0. The team outscored the Redskins, 24-9, with Beathard playing.
