MOORLAND, IA (IRN) – Authorities in the Webster County town of Moorland recovered a woman’s body Friday from inside a car submerged in a pond. KCCI-TV reports witnesses say the vehicle left Highway 20 and went into the pond. A 911 caller said no one came up from the water.

ESTHERVILLE, IA (IRN) – The northwest Iowa community of Estherville has been blanketed with the smell of dead, rotting pigs. The Des Moines Register reports the odor from a nearby rendering plant has driven fans from baseball fields and forced mourners to remain in their cars during graveside rites. The Emmet County Board of Supervisors is pursuing fines against the plant’s owner, Central Bi-Products, based in Redwood Falls, Minnesota.

JOICE, IA (IRN) – An early-morning fire yesterday destroyed the public library in the Worth County town of Joice, according to KIMT-TV. Joice Mayor Mark Thoma called Friday’s fire a “devastating” loss for the small town, saying it was their community cornerstone. No one was injured.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – It was a historic day at the Iowa Judicial Building on Friday as Susan Christensen joined the state’s highest court, following in the footsteps of her father. WHO-TV reports Christensen’s appointment continues a family legacy. Her father, Jerry Larson, served on the Iowa Supreme Court from 1978-2008.
