ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Iowa State Patrol troopers are investigating the cause of a tanker truck fire on I-35 near Ankeny on Thursday. Troopers closed northbound lanes of the interstate for about 20 minutes. Between 50 and 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked in the crash, and some of the fuel seeped into Fourmile Creek.

JASPER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A man from the Jasper County town of Kellog died Thursday after being trapped in a grain bin, according to authorities. KCCI-TV reports David William “Bill” Hotger, 78, was flown by helicopter to a Des Moines Hospital where he died.

POLK COUNTY, A (IRN) – A motorcyclist hit speeds of more than 115 miles per hour while eluding the Iowa State Patrol Thursday morning in Des Moines. WHO-TV reports the pursuit began around 6:45 a.m. north of the East Mixmaster on I-35. An Iowa State Trooper tried to pull over the motorcyclist who was weaving in and out of traffic but they refused to stop. The chase was called off because of potential danger to the public, and the motorcyclist escaped.

DURANT, IA (IRN) – An unusual circumstance let a speeding drunken driver avoid a trip to jail after a recent arrest in the eastern Iowa town of Durant: the sheriff isn’t honoring arrests made there. KIMT-TV reports Cedar County Sheriff Warren Wethington says he can’t rely on the truthfulness of officers in the town of 1,800 people. Wethington has declared that his jail will not book any suspects whom they arrest for the foreseeable future. He has barred Durant officers from setting foot in the county law enforcement center and ordered his own deputies not to base any arrests on the observations of Durant officers.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – People could start legally betting on sporting events in Iowa as early as this fall. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission says it would like to have rules finalized for sports betting before football season begins. Governor Reynolds signed sports betting into law in May.
