DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped for the fifth consecutive month to 2.7 percent in May – down from 3.0 percent in April and from 4.5 percent one year ago. The U.S. May unemployment rate remained at 3.6 percent.

HAMBURG, IA (IRN) – A sheriff’s deputy has died in a head-on crash in the southwestern corner of Iowa. The crash happened Tuesday along Highway 275 north of Hamburg. Austin “Melvin” Richardson, 37, was in his patrol car traveling north when it collided with a southbound farm combine. The combine was wider than the width of the southbound lane, with one of its front tires operating over the highway’s center line. Richardson’s car collided with that front tire, then rolled several times.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man was arrested in Cedar Rapids after police say he punched an officer in the face repeatedly early Wednesday morning. Officers responded to a harassment call, and found 34-year-old Ryan Floerchinger there and a foot pursuit ensued. Police said it ended when Floerchinger charged at the officer, knocking them to the ground. Police said the suspect then repeatedly punched the officer in the face, causing serious injury.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One person was injured in a panic after shots were fired during a carnival outside Valley West Mall on Wednesday. The shooting happened around 9:30 pm. Police say there was a disagreement in the crowd and a suspect pulled out a gun and fired into the air. No one was hit by gunfire, but police say one person suffered minor injuries after being trampled while people were running from the scene.

OSCEOLA, IA (IRN) – Osceola’s mayor has resigned. The city had been conducting an internal investigation into Matthew Stoll. It revolved around an incident from June 4 inside the clubhouse at the Osceola Golf Course. The city manager said it involved property damage and a physical fight. No criminal charges have been filed.
