POCAHONTAS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Dozens of cats and kittens are receiving care after they were rescued from an abandoned home in Pocahontas County. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa’s Mobile Rescue Team was called in by local law enforcement after officers discovered 30 cats and kittens had been left inside the home with no food or water and in filthy conditions.
GRUNDY CENTER, IA (IRN) – A man who shot and killed an Iowa State trooper has been sentenced to life in prison. Michael Lang was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assaulting a police officer in May. Lang shot and killed Trooper Jim Smith in Grundy Center as Smith led a tactical team into a home. Before the shooting, a chase led police there and Lang barricaded himself inside.
MENDON, MO (IRN) – An Amtrak train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago crashed in northern Missouri Monday. Amtrak says the train, eight cars and two locomotives with 243 passengers, crashed in Mendon, Missouri at 1:42 p.m. when it hit a dump truck at a public crossing. The train was headed to Fort Madison, Iowa before reaching its destination in Chicago. Amtrak says at least three people were killed and 50 were injured.
MARENGO, IA (IRN) – Authorities are conducting an investigation following the death of a 13-year-old girl at a home in Marengo. Foul play isn’t suspected.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police are investigating after an east side convenience store was robbed early Monday morning. It happened at a QuikTrip shortly after 2:30 a.m. The suspect didn’t display a weapon but implied that he had one. No one was injured in the robbery and the suspect fled on a bicycle.
