DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The sentencing for a sex trafficked teen who killed her alleged rapist in Des Moines has been pushed back until next week. Pieper Lewis, 17, was charged last year with killing Zachary Brooks when she was 15. Brooks, 37, allegedly raped Lewis multiple times in the weeks leading up to his death, which was on June 1, 2020.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The driver who killed an East High School student in a hit-and-run crash this spring will not serve time in prison. Ema Cardenas, 14, was struck and killed on April 28 as she walked home from East High School. Police located the vehicle involved at a home nearby, but it was not until the following day that the driver, Terra Flipping, 38, turned herself in. She received probation over the objections of the victim’s family.
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A 23-year-old is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder after an officer-involved shooting took place in Cedar Rapids in late July. On July 30, during a traffic stop, two officers fired 12 shots at 23-year-old Brandon Nelson, hitting him three times. The Linn County Attorney conducted a legal review and concluded the use of force was “necessary” after Nelson aimed a shotgun at both officers and fired at one of them.
DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police say someone was shot on the south side of Des Moines overnight. A man is in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. He is expected to survive. The woman who allegedly shot him was detained.
IOWA (IRN) – An Iowa corrections officer and five other law enforcement officers in Iowa are among 330 people in the state listed as a member of the Oath Keepers, a far-right extremist group that’s accused of playing a role in the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riots. Data was published by the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism on Tuesday.
