DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Firefighters were called early Friday morning to a fire at a restaurant on Des Moines’ southside. WHO-TV reports it happened at the China Chef restaurant. It burned for about 20 minutes before crews arrived, but once on scene they were able to extinguish the fire quickly. CLEAR LAKE, IA (IRN) – A Clear Lake woman is facing charges after she drunkenly crashed into a Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s patrol car. KIMT-TV reports the patrol vehicle was at a traffic stop when her vehicle struck the back of it. There were no injuries. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Former Vice President Joe Biden will return to Iowa Tuesday. Biden’s Cedar Rapids rally appearance will come exactly one week ahead of Election Day, as he will join Democratic candidates currently in tight Iowa races. Those candidates include gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell and 1st congressional candidate Abby Finkenauer. IOWA (IRN) – An intercepted a pass thwarted Iowa at the Penn State 2 with 3:18 left and the No. 17 Nittany Lions held on to avoid a third straight home loss with a 30-24 victory Saturday over the No. 18 Hawkeyes. Iowa State rallied to beat the Red Raiders 40-31.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man was sentenced Friday to life in prison after murdering his estranged wife, according to KCCI-TV. A jury had convicted 51-year-old Harold Dudley of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 36-year-old Mary Dudley. He admitted to shooting her, but said that the killing arose from a sudden quarrel and that he should be convicted of second-degree murder. Prosecutors, however, showed videos that showed him peering around a corner at his wife’s apartment while holding a handgun before he kicked in her door and fired six times. BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – A man armed with a box cutter stole a woman’s car in a Hy-Vee parking lot in Burlington, according to WQAD-TV. On Friday, the victim at the store was approached by 22-year-old Dalton McKeown, who said he wanted to take her car. She said no, and that’s when he took out the box cutter to threaten her. He was soon apprehended. JACKSON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A hunter and his dog were saved after his kayak capsized in an Iowa lake. Rescue crews were called to Browns Lake in eastern Iowa for the hunter holding onto his kayak on October 20, according to the Iowa DNR. Thanks to a waterproof cell phone case, he was able to call 911. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Nearly 2,000 of the best gymnasts in the United States will coming to Des Moines next summer. On Friday, ‘Catch Des Moines’ announced the 2019 USA Gymnastics Championships is coming to the Iowa Events Center. The five day event will take place from July 2nd-6th, 2019.

FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – An arrest has been made in a double homicide that happened early Monday morning in Fort Dodge when two brothers were found dead in an alley. Tanner J. King, 28, was taken into custody Thursday. King has a lengthy criminal record and has been in the news before. In 2012, King was injured as an inmate in the Webster County Jail when he tried to jump from one roof to another and fell 40 feet. He is under a suicide watch. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating a shooting that sent a teenager to the hospital Wednesday night. WHO-TV reports police responded to a report of gunshots and a few minutes later Blank Hospital notified officers they were treating a gunshot victim. The victim is a 17-year-old who suffered a gunshot wound to the arm. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – Three people are in jail after a standoff that lasted almost six hours on Wednesday night. WQAD-TV reports police received a tip about stolen property at a home in Bettendorf. One woman was arrested as she tried to flee, a second woman was arrested when the search warrant was executed, and after the standoff a man was found hiding in the attic. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – An Iowa school district criticized for discriminating against minorities is investigating reports that a teacher wore blackface at a public Halloween party. The Quad-City Times reports that Walcott Elementary teacher Megan Luloff wore makeup to appear to be African-American at the party Friday night at the Walcott American Legion. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s prison system announced a plan to suspend services at four facilities in order to reduce the Department of Corrections’ fiscal year 2017 budget by $5.5 million. The Gazette reports the changes are required by law and impact facilities in Harpers Ferry, Clarinda, Fort Madison and Sheldon. The cuts comply with legislation that is expected to reduce staff positions by 3 percent.

HINTON, IA (IRN) – A semi versus pedestrian accident happened this morning in the Plymouth County town of Hinton. The pedestrian was crossing a highway towards a Casey’s Gas Station when a semi-truck struck him. He sustained non-life threatening but serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – The driver who was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Davenport has died, according to WQAD-TV. A deputy initiated a traffic stop, and a struggle ensued between the deputy and the driver, 27-year-old Robert Mitchell. The deputy ended up shooting Mitchell. A woman in the car says the shooting was not justified. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man faces numerous charges after he sped through Des Moines and crashed a stolen car into a vehicle with a woman and baby inside. KCCI-TV reports 25-year-old Brandon Lee St. Peter was speeding, a chase ensued, and police abandoned the pursuit because it was too dangerous. A Good Samaritan pulled the baby from the wreckage. Everyone is OK, and St. Peter faces numerous charges. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Emergency room physicians are protesting an Iowa Medicaid billing change that they say harms low-income patients and hospitals. KGAN-TV reports starting Aug. 1, Iowa Medicaid no longer allowed emergency rooms to submit claims for treating some conditions that turn out to be non-emergent. They say the change unfairly puts the burden of self-diagnosis on patients and discourages them from seeking treatment. Physicians are concerned patients will be hit with surprise bills and hospitals won’t be reimbursed for necessary treatment. DEEP RIVER, IA (IRN) – A Poweshiek County farmer’s final harvest came in over the weekend, days after his death. WHO-TV reports Kenny Keller died unexpectedly last Thursday at the age of 78. Over the weekend a group of 20 friends and neighbors put their own harvests on hold and came together to bring in a final harvest for Keller. A celebration of life was held on Sunday night for Keller after the work was finished.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A man shot during a struggle with a sheriff’s deputy in Davenport has died. KCCI-TV reports 27-year-old Robert Mitchell died at a hospital Tuesday night. A deputy pulled over Mitchell’s vehicle on I-80, a chase ensued, and an altercation occurred that led to the deputy shooting Mitchell. BUCHANAN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old boy was seriously hurt after crashing head-on into a farm combine Tuesday near Winthrop. KGAN-TV reports the boy was airlifted to the hospital. His passenger, a 15-year-old girl, was transported with minor injuries. The combine driver was treated and released at the scene. NEWTON, IA (IRN) – Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the Walnut Creek Apartments in Newton to go up in flames Monday. KCCI-TV reports resident Arlene Craver, 94, said heavy smoke filled the air as all 24 units were evacuated. She said, “the fireman came in and banged on the door and said, ‘Get out!’” Craver said she lost her husband just weeks ago, and now, she doesn’t have a home. All residents were evacuated safely, but some pets did not survive. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Dubuque will soon begin construction to improve cell phone and broadband signals in the city, but some residents are objecting. KCRG-TV reports at the most recent city council meeting, community members showed up to express their concern about potential health risks from the 5G frequency emissions. City officials say it is too late to get out of their contract, and the health risks are minimal. GALENA TERRITORY, IL (IRN) – University of Iowa officials have santioned the Sigma Nu fraternity for damage caused to properties in Illinois. The fraternity rented out several properties in the Galena Territory, a lakeside community in Illinois in 2017. By the end of the weekend, they caused more than $100,000 in damages.
