LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly crash between a pedestrian and a train along tracks southeast of Cedar Rapids. KGAN-TV reports the victim is a teenage girl who had been walking on the tracks when a train hit her. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – The inmate accused of killing a Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputy admitted his guilt during a court hearing today. Wesley Correa-Carmenaty entered guilty pleas without any kind of plea agreement. Correa-Carmenaty had just been sentenced on May 1 to 45 years in prison in an unrelated murder case when he grabbed one of the deputies’ guns while being transferred to the county jail. He shot both deputies, killing one, and used the jail van to escape. He was recaptured that day in Omaha, Nebraska, after carjacking a woman at gunpoint. WEBSTER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The body of a woman found near Clare in Webster County has been identified. 26-year-old Jessica Gomez was reported missing, but has now been identified as the deceased woman found on Saturday. Mackenzie Knigge and Phillip Williams are charged with first degree murder. They are being held in Indiana. LANSING, IA (IRN) – A McGregor woman went to the hospital after she drove her car into the Mississippi River in Lansing. KCRG-TV reports while she escaped, her dog drowned. FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Senator Joni Ernst said she is frustrated that it took President Donald Trump two days to condemn white supremacy, according to KCCI-TV. Ernst spoke out Monday during a town hall meeting in Fort Dodge, addressing the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. She says “Absolutely it’s frustrating…we all need to condemn it at once. That’s not okay.” DOON, IA (IRN) – The Iowa State Patrol says a man stopped for speeding at 114 mph in a 55 mph zone was cited less than 15 minute later for speeding again. The man was clocked Saturday in Lyon County at 114 mph. The driver told the officer he was in such a hurry because he was “Late for the Doon Days Parade” in the Lyon County town of Doon. The same driver was stopped minutes later at 71 mph in a 55 mph zone. He was apparently still late for the Doon Days Parade.

MARION, IA (IRN) – A November trial has been scheduled for a Marion kindergarten teacher accused of not reporting that a 15-year-old classroom volunteer sexually abused her students. KWWL-TV reports a judge set a trial starting date of Nov. 6 for 59-year-old Diane Graham, who’s pled not guilty to failure to report child abuse. Prosecutors say Graham didn’t report the abuse, allowing it to continue for two more months. The boy has been convicted of three counts of sexual abuse. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man was hospitalized Sunday after he was shot while in his truck near the Iowa State Fairgrounds. KCCI-TV reports the man was sleeping in his pickup truck near the fairgrounds when he awoke to the sound of a gunshot and felt a sharp pain in his right hip area. When he looked down, he saw a tear in his pants, and noticed he was shot in the buttock. The victim said he was waiting for his sister, who was employed at the fair. CLARE, IA (IRN) – A body was found Saturday in a rural area near Clare in Webster County. The DCI is investigating. Officials in Webster County have been looking for Jessica Gomez and Mackenzie Knigge, both 26, who went missing earlier this month. Knigge was found safe Thursday in Indiana. Gomez is still missing, but officials have not commented on whether or not the body found Saturday is hers. CLINTON, IA (IRN) – An inmate was found dead Sunday morning in the Clinton County Jail, according to KCRG-TV. Several agencies are investigating the death. NEW VIRGINIA, IA (IRN) – A multiple-vehicle crash involving a state trooper, two semi trucks, and an SUV took place near New Virginia Sunday on I-35. A trooper was parked on the shoulder and got out of his vehicle to retrieve a ladder in the roadway. An SUV pulling a boat began slowing down near the trooper, but a semi travelling behind the SUV failed to slow down. The semi hit the boat, which pushed the SUV into the squad car. The semi then clipped a second truck. No injuries were reported. PORT BYRON, ILL (IRN) – Illinois and Iowa battled against one another from across the mighty Mississippi, according to WQAD-TV. Tug fest is a tug of war competition between residents in Port Byron, Illinois and Le Claire, Iowa. Hundreds of people gathered on both sides of the river to cheer on the competitors. Who won? Illinois. Illinois has taken the title 10 out of the 11 times the competition has been held.

ORANGE CITY, IA (IRN) – A vehicle accident 32 years ago left Todd Mouw of Orange City a quadriplegic, unable to feed himself and needing a ventilator to breathe, according to the Des Moines Register. After the accident he lived at home aided by medical staff who visited daily to help provide 24-hour care. That care abruptly ended when a for-profit company that Iowa hired last year to manage the state’s Medicaid program announced that it wouldn’t pay any more. Now three months later, he has died. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two people are in the hospital after their car crashed into a home in Des Moines. WHO-TV reports just after midnight a Dodge Ram clipped a Chevy Malibu. The Ram then flipped and crashed into a house. The driver and three passengers from the pickup left the scene, and the driver and passenger of the car were taken to the hospital. AMES, IA (IRN) – Mosquitoes from traps at central Iowa parks have tested positive for the West Nile virus. The testing was recently conducted at parks in Ames. ISU entomologist Ryan Smith says late summer is the peak season for transmission of the virus. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – This year’s State Fair Queen is from Dubuque County. The fair board named Jacqueline Ehrlich Queen on Saturday. She beat out more than 100 other contestants to take home the grand prize. Jacqueline won the title of Dubuque County Fair Queen earlier this year. Saturday’s win earned her a total of $8,000 scholarships and other prizes.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A Davenport woman accused of attempting to flush her newborn down a toilet and leaving the child in a trash can at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has taken a plea deal. The Gazette reports 24-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader entered Alford pleas to charges of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person and child endangerment in exchange for the drop of her most serious charge, attempted murder. An Alford plea is when a defendant doesn’t admit guilt, but acknowledges that there is likely enough evidence for a conviction. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – An Ottumwa caretaker admitted to having sex with a mentally disabled patient during her shift Monday. KTVO-TV reports Ottumwa police arrested 26-year-old Cynthia Kopp Wednesday and charged her with Dependent Adult Abuse. Kopp was a professionally employed caretaker when she had consensual sex with the adult victim more than once. HAMPTON, IA (IRN) – A man who held a woman against her will for at least 12 hours at his home, who also repeatedly hit her, used a taser on her, and let his dog bite her, will spend life in prison without parole. KCRG-TV reports Charles Albright of Meservey was sentenced Friday on charges of willful injury and first degree kidnapping. BUCHANAN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A crash between a motorcycle and a truck in Buchanan County sent one to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by helicopter. The Iowa State Patrol reports a motorcycle driven by 35-year-old Gregory Fernau of Hazelton, tried to pass a truck as the truck was trying to turn left. Fernau’s motorcycle hit the driver’s side door of the truck. He was not wearing a helmet. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Approximately 30 FBI agents raided a Catholic worker house in Des Moines in relation to a federal investigation regarding the vandalism of the Dakota Access Pipeline construction project. KCCI-TV reports the raid started before dawn at the Berrigan House where Jessica Reznicek and Ruby Montoya are staying. The women claimed responsibility last month for setting several pieces of construction equipment on fire and damaging pipeline valves with torches. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new trail is taking shape in Des Moines, but it’s not a typical bike path, according to WHO-TV. The paint is drying for Art Route Des Moines, which is a six-mile trail leading visitors to public art. Along the trail are 87 pieces of art on sidewalks and crosswalks. The trail stretches from the state capitol to the Meredith Corporation.

CLIVE, IA (IRN) – Iowa Lottery officials say someone who bought a Powerball ticket in Avoca has won a $1 million prize. The ticket purchased at Wings America Travel Centre matched the first five numbers drawn Wednesday but missed on the Powerball number. CENTERVILLE, IA (IRN) – A rollover crash in Appanoose County claimed the life of a Centerville teen Thursday. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and found a 1999 Dodge Ram rolled over in a ditch. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – An 8-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling off her bike in Dubuque County. KCRG-TV reports the girl fell while riding down a grassy hill. She was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she is in critical condition. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – An apartment building had to be evacuated Thursday afternoon in Mason City, according to KIMT-TV. Apartment resident Brandy Blakely says she smelled rubber burning, and then saw smoke and flames. She and others yelled “fire,” and evacuated the building. Several doors had to be broken down to rescue people. Blakely says she’s lost everything. No injuries were reported. WARREN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A man led Norwalk police on a chase at speeds of over 100 mph Thursday, according to WHO-TV. He’s in jail after stopping to ask directions, and running out of gas. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The biggest boar is drawing thousands of visitors at the Iowa State Fair. KCCI-TV reports Big Buck weighed in at 1,192 pounds. The Hampshire boar is from the eastern Iowa town of Ryan, population around 350. Big Buck’s owners, McDonald Acres, also won the competition in 2015 with Big Mac. They said the secret to their success is in the “secret sauce” that they feed their animals.
