DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An elderly person in northwest Iowa has died from the West Nile virus, marking the first Iowa death due to exposure to the virus since 2010. Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health only identified the victim as an elderly individual who was 81 years of age or older.

HAMBURG, IA (IRN) – A 14-year-old boy has been killed in the crash of an all-terrain vehicle in southwest Iowa. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office says the accident occurred late Monday afternoon in a soybean field about three miles east of Hamburg.

DES MOINES, IA – A 14-year-old boy who is a student at Roosevelt High School was shot in the head in downtown Des Moines yesterday. KCCI-TV reports the boy was transported to Methodist Medical Center by private vehicle. He’s in critical condition. A potential crime scene at a downtown bank is being investigated in relation to the shooting.

SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – A car crashed into a stopped school bus near the Linn County town of Springville yesterday afternoon, according to KCRG-TV. Six students and a driver were on the bus. One child went to the hospital with minor injuries. The female driver of the car had to be extracted from the vehicle, and was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Vinton woman has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge connected to the fatal accidental shooting of a 14-year-old girl. KGAN-TV reports Robyn Merchant provided a rifle to her 16-year-old son, who she knew used marijuana. A teen other than the her son was handling the gun when it fired, hitting Emma Redlinger. She died four days later.

DYERSVILLE, IA (IRN) – The owners of the Field of Dreams movie site near Dyersville say that for the first time they will allow tours of the house that overlooks the famous baseball field. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports the group “Go the Distance Baseball” announced Monday it would open the house, which was used as a backdrop for much of the 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner. Approximately 100,000 people visit the location annually.

FAYETTE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man is in jail accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl. KGAN-TV reports 25-year-old Niall Lewis met a 14-year-old girl on social media and lured her to various locations for sex over the summer. Authorities say that more victims may come forward and more charges could be filed.

CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A judge in Charles City has issued an administrative order banning guns and other weapons in and around judicial offices in north Iowa courthouses. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Second Judicial District chief judge Kurt Wilke gave the order Oct. 12. The ban covers the district’s 22 counties. Law enforcement and court officers are exempt from the ban.

BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – A house used as a supported community living home suffered an estimated $30,000 worth of damage after a fire broke out in Burlington Sunday. WQAD-TV reports three residents and an employee were able to get out without injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation and is considered suspicious.

SCOTT COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A homeless man in Cedar Rapids is set to go to trial for his second murder charge. KCRG-TV reports Travis Standlee is charged with the murder of Sharon Mead, who was also homeless. Prosecutors claim Standlee killed Mead the day after he was released from jail, under suspicion of the murder of a second homeless person, Raymond Ursino. Police didn’t have enough evidence to hold him at the time. Earlier this year Standlee was found guilty in the murder of Ursino, and sentenced to 50 years in prison.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Des Moines at 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning. WHO-TV reports 43-year-old Sheila Hensley of Des Moines was killed when her vehicle left the roadway at a high rate of speed and struck a utility pole.

AVOCA, IA (IRN) – One man was killed and three were injured in a crash Saturday night on Interstate 80 near Avoca. The driver of the car, Jesus German, lost control of the vehicle and it rolled multiple times before coming to a stop. The man killed was partially ejected, and his name has not been released. Troopers say speed and alcohol played a role in the accident. One passenger, Antonio Aguilar, was arrested on an existing felony warrant. The men are from Nebraska.

AMES, IA (IRN) – Runners laced up their sneakers at the Paws to Cure Cancer 5K at Iowa State University Saturday, according to KCCI-TV. Some brought their furry friends along for the fun and to raise money to help fight canine cancer, the top cause of death for dogs in the United States. Organizers say cancer research helps not only humans, but our pets as well.

MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – A body was found by a city of Muscatine employee at a skate park yesterday, according to WQAD-TV. The gender, age and identity of the deceased have not been released to allow police time to notify family members. Police have not said if the cause of death was homicide or accidental.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The Catholic Worker House in Cedar Rapids says it has already exceed the number of homeless people it helped in all of last year, calling it an alarming trend. KCRG-TV reports last year the shelter served 240 people and so far this year, it’s already served 260. The shelter primarily houses women and married couples, and will soon open an overflow shelter.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Templeton Rye Whiskey will receive $1.6 million in tax credits to bring its entire operation to the state of Iowa. The Iowa Economic Development Authority approved the credits Friday. Named after the town of Templeton, the company came under fire when lawsuits were filed against it for false advertising. The whiskey, though bottled in Templeton, is distilled and aged in Indiana.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The Hawkeyes had a chance to upset a top-10 team and gain an edge in the division. Instead, Iowa’s offense came up empty and #10 Wisconsin is headed home with a 17-9 win. The UNI Panthers crushed Missouri State 61-7. The Iowa State Cyclones had the weekend off, and the Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series for the first time since 1945.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A north Iowa man has been arrested on multiple drug charges, according to KIMT-TV. 47-year-old Kai Adam Kral of Nora Springs was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail Thursday. Kral is accused of selling meth to someone working with the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force at his home on two occasions in May.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for a double murder, according to the Des Moines Register. Barney Fraaken shot and killed his wife Amy and his 16-year-old daughter Amber in November. Fraaken then turned the gun on himself, but survived.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A former Iowa State Trooper has been charged with a felony theft in a workers’ compensation case. WHO-TV reports Lance Below is accused of cheating the state out of workers’ compensation benefits. He illegally collected benefits for an ankle injury suffered on the job, while at the same time collected a paycheck at another job. He didn’t report the second income, which kept his benefits $26,000 higher than they should have been.

CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – Staffing levels at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville are at “atrocious” levels, according to union President Danny Homan. KCRG-TV reports Homan says the lack of correctional officers at the facility is what led to a recent incident where four inmates tested positive for meth. Homan believes visitors are delivering drugs, and state lawmakers are to blame for underfunding staff positions at the facility.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says this upcoming week will bring the peak of fall colors throughout the state. KWWL-TV reports this is especially good news for Dubuque and the surrounding tri-states area as many people will visit. Tourism officials say the bluffs along the Mississippi are beautiful, and The Great River Road that connects Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa will be well travelled this weekend and coming week.
