CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A 27-year-old Charles City woman has been charged after being accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that Brittany Rae Beek was arrested Wednesday by Charles City police and charged with two counts of third-degree sexual abuse.

JONES COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person died after they crashed while trying to pass a tractor near Monticello, according to KCRG-TV. The car tried to pass the tractor in a no passing zone. The tractor turned left as the car was attempting to pass. The driver avoided the tractor, but lost control and crashed.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police have charged a woman with election misconduct after officials reported she voted twice. The Des Moines Register reports officers charged 55-year-old Terri Rote with first-degree election misconduct on Thursday. She’s a Republican and Trump supporter who has been photographed holding a Trump sign at his rallies.

MIDWESTERN UNITED STATES (IRN) – Can’t get ahold of your family member on the phone? Chances are they’re victim of a massive AT&T service outage. WQAD-TV reports portions of the Quad Cities have been effected, but the bulk of the outage has hit Chicago and Indianapolis.

RIVERSIDE, IA (IRN) – A great horned owl has a sheriff’s deputy and zoologist to thank for saving it after it was caught in a barbed wire fence near Riverside. KCII-Radio reports Vera Jean Fitzgerald of Wellman and Deputy Jeremy Richardson found the owl, and Fitzgerald is helping it recover. Fitzgerald isn’t new to helping wild animals heal; she’s taken care of raccoons, foxes, skunks and moles in the past.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The zombies have arrived and they are attacking an Urbandale home, according to WHO-TV. For the next three nights a home on a sleepy cul-de-sac will be transformed into “Zombie Hollow.” It’s the work of homeowner Lew Jordan and his family. There is no admission, but the family is asking for free will donations for Sentinels of Freedom, a charity that helps wounded veterans.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa reclaims its title as a battleground state today, with both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates visiting the state to make their case for the White House. WHO-TV reports Hillary Clinton is having two rallies in Cedar Rapids today followed by one in Des Moines at Roosevelt High School. Donald Trump is holding an outdoor rally at McGrath Amphitheatre in Cedar Rapids tonight.

BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – One person is dead after an accident on Interstate 80 at approximately 3 a.m. today. WQAD-TV reports the semi-driver lost control of his vehicle and swerved into a ditch.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – More than 700 patients at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines were impacted by a hospital pharmacy tech who tampered with their pain medication. WHO-TV reports the unidentified employee has been placed on administrative leave and is accused of taking pain medication intended for patients and replacing it with saline.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – The home of a gay candidate running for a spot on the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors has been vandalized. KGAN-TV reports Christopher Schwartz says anti-gay messages were spray painted onto his home. Police are calling it a hate crime. Schwartz says the vandalism occurred amid a heated social media argument involving a group called the Cedar Valley Patriots for Christ. The leader of the group says they aren’t responsible.

CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A minor theft could lead to more serious charges in Floyd County, according to KIMT-TV. 33-year-old Isaiah Weber of Charles City allegedly stole a police badge affixed to a memorial plaque on a wall at City Hall. Police executed a search warrant at his home and seized firearms and drugs. He’s in jail.

STAR CITY, RUSSIA (IRN) – An Iowa native will embark on her third trip to the International Space Station, according to KCRG-TV. Peggy Whitson of Beaconsfield will be the first woman to command the space station twice. In her previous command in 2007, she became the first woman to ever command the ISS. Whitson and her crew will launch on November 15th from Kazakhstan aboard their Soyuz spacecraft.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 12-year-old was hit by a car while crossing the street on the southside of Des Moines early this morning, according to WHO-TV. A nurse who was a witness cared for the child while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The child was taken to Methodist Hospital with serious injuries. Darkness may have played a role in the accident.

FAYETTE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Five people were taken to the hospital yesterday after a crash in Fayette County. KWWL-TV reports Nathan Gebel of Lansing failed to yield at an intersection and struck a pickup driven by Steven Chase from Waterloo. The two drivers and three passengers were hospitalized. Gebel will be cited for not yielding.

SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – A woman has died after she crashed into a Springville school bus in Linn County Monday. KGAN-TV reports 26-year-old Molly Zelinskas died from her injuries the next day. Zelinskas drove into the bus as it was dropping off a student. A parent picking up their child at the stop said the bus was stopped and had its flashing lights on. A student was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Two pit bulls wandering an Ankeny neighborhood killed a Chihuahua Monday morning, according to WHO-TV. An 81-year-old woman was able to grab her Chihuahua and make a dash for her garage when the pit bulls turned on her. Fortunately, the garage door coming down scared the pit bulls away. The two pit bulls were declared vicious after a previous attack in 2014. Their owner apologized, and may face a fine.

CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The longest-serving police chief in Iowa will soon retire from his job. KCRG-TV reports Coralville police chief Barry Bedford plans to retire shortly after the new year. He’s been in the position since 1988, and with the department since 1974. Chief Bedford recently turned 66. State law doesn’t allow people older than 65 to be police officers.

CASCADE, IA (IRN) – The last time the Chicago Cubs were in the World Series, Kurt Ade of Cascade had just returned from Europe after serving in World War II. KWWL-TV reports Ade says he and other enlisted men listened to the World Series outside of the Officer’s Club, which they weren’t allowed to enter. He’s been a Cubs fan since his dad took him to his first game in 1930. The Cubs honored him this season as he took the field with Manager Joe Maddon.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are looking for a man who held another man at gunpoint and forced him to drive to an ATM. The victim was able to get away without being hurt.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids woman has been sent to federal prison for defrauding an elderly Illinois woman and her husband out of more than $100,000. KWWL-TV reports 37-year-old Tea Ware admitted that over a six month period she would call the woman and falsely tell her that she had won a lottery or sweepstakes and would receive a large sum of money. Ware told the woman she could claim her winnings only if she mailed her money for taxes or fees.

WEST BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Des Moines County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence north of West Burlington to investigate a report of a burglary in progress. KTVO-TV reports the home owner found his basement door propped open with a backpack that was not his. Deputies arrived, and arrested 25-year-old Daniel Lusk of Burlington, who was armed and hiding under a pool table in the basement. Lusk resisted arrest, and is in jail.

TIPTON, IA (IRN) – A bank in Tipton is cleaning up after someone backed a pickup truck through the building, according to KGAN-TV. A bank teller at Citizens Bank says the truck took out the back wall and hit the teller stations. No one was hurt.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – For more than 40 years, the University of Dubuque’s aviation program has helped aspiring pilot’s dreams take flight. KCRG-TV reports aviation students will soon have the option to choose; training in airplanes, or in a helicopter. They’re adding the program in response to the current helicopter pilot shortage. Helicopter pilot jobs are in high demand all over the world.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new show is taking a comedic look at politics and the Iowa Caucus, according to KCCI-TV. “Embeds” follows the lives of 20-something journalists traveling with a political campaign. The idea was born from the 2008 Iowa Caucus when the creators were here embedded in a political campaign. The show will be available on the free Verizon go90 app, a new app for original content. Users do not need a Verizon subscription to watch the show.
