DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police have taken a teenager into custody following a shooting that happened Thursday morning. WHO-TV reports two groups of juveniles had an altercation on property next to a Buffalo Wild Wings on the south side of town. During that altercation, one juvenile shot another juvenile in the leg. On Friday, police took a 17-year-old into custody in connection with the case. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids Police are working to find out who shot a man Saturday morning according to KCRG-TV. When officers arrived on scene they found a man with a gunshot wound to the lower leg. Police said the man’s injuries weren’t life threatening, and he was taken to a local hospital. Investigators are working to determine a motive for the shooting and how many people were involved. PALO ALTO COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A northwest Iowa man has been sentenced to five years in prison for shooting at a crop-dusting plane in Palo Alto County last year. KWWL-TV reports 55-year-old John Metzger of Whittemore was sentenced Friday. Metzger was found guilty in November by a jury of going armed with intent. He was not found guilty of other charges, including terrorism. Metzger fired a gun that hit the wing flap of a plane while spraying a field. The plane landed safely and the pilot wasn’t injured. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A WWII veteran recently received France’s highest military honor for his bravery, according to KCCI-TV. At 95 years old, Ralph Crawford, of Villisca, still remembers the mission vividly. It was June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day. His bomber was shot down, but the crew survived. Crawford was awarded the Legion of Honor, for his “gallantry of action and the liberation of France in WWII.” He says he’s shocked by the recognition, and his family says it’s long overdue.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A driver lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a house in Davenport around 3 a.m. Saturday. WQAD-TV reports the driver was the only one in the car and after he was pulled out of the car by medics, he was taken to the hospital. He’s in serious condition. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – Two brothers were taken into custody after a shotgun was found in their car on the Iowa Western Community College campus in Council Bluffs. KIMT-TV reports 19-year-old Eric and 18-year-old Edrick Maymon, of Markham, Illinois were charged. They both attend the school. Students reported Thursday that the two made threatening comments and gestures as they drove by in their car. Police found the brothers in a student’s room later and then found the shotgun in the car. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A sale to undercover officers in Dubuque led to two charges of possession of heroin with intent to deliver. KCRG-TV reports 23-year-old Maurice Whitehead of Chicago was arrested Tuesday as part of an undercover operation. Police said officers met Whitehead, bought .37 grams of heroin for $50, then arrested him. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Supreme Court says an eastern Iowa woman given up for adoption as an infant cannot unseal adoption records to learn the names of her biological parents, even though it would help in her alcoholism recovery. KGAN-TV reports the Linn County woman says her drinking problem is rooted in feelings of abandonment. The Supreme Court says the disclosure of her birth parents’ names would assist in her treatment but Iowa’s adoption law weighs heavily toward confidentiality. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new sport is becoming popular in Iowa, according to KCCI-TV. It involves moving like a ninja, and is called tricking. BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – A Burlington man is facing felony domestic assault charges after police say he attacked his 16-year-old girlfriend with a machete and a pool cue during a Thursday argument. KBUR-radio reports detectives arrested 20-year-old Dakota Poland at his residence after conducting a search and finding the items described by the young lady as being used in her assault. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City police say a man assaulted a woman he met on the dating app Tinder. KCRG-TV reports 20-year-old Zachary Berry is accused of setting up a date, but then forced the woman to have sex with him. He denies the allegations. SPENCER, IA (IRN) – The Iowa medical examiner’s office has concluded that the death of a Spencer High School wrestler who collapsed at a December match was likely caused by a congenital heart defect. The Sioux City Journal reports dehydration may have also played a role in the death of 18-year-old Austin Roberts. Roberts, at 220 pounds, collapsed at a tournament after taking injury time when he couldn’t catch his breath. He died later that day. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A half-naked man armed with a shotgun tried to force a high school student into his car in Des Moines Wednesday, according to KCCI-TV. The East High School student told police she was walking near the school when the man walked past her. He later drove up, told her to perform a sex act, and threatened her with a shotgun. She turned her back to him, ran to a nearby convenience store, and called police. FAYETTE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – 30 pounds of gunpowder, threaded and drilled steel pipes, two pressure cookers, fuses, BB’s, shredded metal, a flamethrower and napalm mix. These are just some of the materials found on a Fayette County man’s property that led to his arrest, according to KCRG-TV. 34-year old Trevor John Satrom of Oran faces numerous charges. Authorities also recovered body armor, guns and rifles, as well as smoke grenades. Computers were also seized and are being examined by the DCI lab and the ATF. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has approved a construction permit for the Bakken pipeline. The announcement came just hours after the Iowa Utilities Board approved the pipeline plan to be built across the state Thursday. The permit still needs authorization from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Students across the state received good news Thursday via video, according to WHO-TV. “Hi — I’m Ashton Kutcher, and I’m funding all the classroom projects in the state of Iowa.” The Iowa native Hollywood actor “flash funded” 131 projects at 100 schools in Iowa. The movement is all part of the #BestSchoolDay initiative. More than 60 celebrities, business leaders and athletes participated nationally to flash fund the accounts. $14 million was raised for schools. Kutcher also released a video sharing how Iowa Schools helped him become the person he is today.

SCHLESWIG, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday in Schleswig. At 6:20 p.m. deputies went to an apartment complex for a welfare check. A male subject pointed a long gun at deputies and threatened to shoot. A standoff ensued. At 11:45 p.m., the man fired one round in the direction of officers, a deputy returned fire and struck him. The subject was life-flighted with non-life threatening injuries. The name of the subject has not been released. CLAYTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office is looking for some stolen guns and the person who stole them from the Mar-Mac Unified Police Department in Marquette, according to KCRG-TV. Police say last month flood water got inside the building so they were moving things around. Investigators say it was during that time that someone stole the guns. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition with a head injury after he was assaulted Tuesday in Davenport. WQAD-TV reports the child was found near Monroe Elementary School. Police arrested three 15-year-old boys who have been charged with willful injury with serious injury and going armed with intent. Police said the teens were armed with bricks and a hammer. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man was charged Wednesday with felony child endangerment for allegedly whipping his son with a belt about 15 times. KCCI-TV reports the boy’s mother reported the incident. She told police she was scared 34-year-old Jeremy Polson was going to seriously injure the boy. Polson found out his son got in trouble at middle school, told him to go to his room, and then struck him repeatedly with the belt. The boy suffered bruises on his buttocks, left side and thigh. MARION, IA (IRN) – Marion police a looking for a registered sex offender who stabbed a man in Marion Wednesday morning, according to KWWL-TV. Police believe 42-year-old Sean Hemphill did it, but when they arrived he was already gone. Because the stabbing occurred within a few blocks from Marion schools, the district went on a lockdown as a precaution. The man’s injuries were not life-threatening. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Distracted walking is increasingly a problem in Iowa City, according to David Ricketts, Director of Parking and Transportation at the University of Iowa. KCRG-TV reports an increasing number of people are walking while using their cell phones. Tyler Paintin, who makes and sells bracelets at a street corner near campus, estimates that he sees nearly three people per hour narrowly miss being hit by a car or bus. Nationally, pedestrian deaths surged by 10 percent last year.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The governor’s $4.7 billion proposal to improve Iowa’s water quality over three decades would generate $691 million in economic activity and create 2,800 jobs annually, according to an Iowa State University report released Tuesday. Gov. Terry Branstad proposes extending a tax that supports Iowa school facilities and diverting part of the tax revenue growth to efforts to cut the amount of nutrients entering Iowa waters. Critics say the governor’s plan fails to hold agriculture accountable for nutrient runoff and passes the bill to the taxpayer. MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – Mason City is on its way to getting a hog-processing operation that’s expected to employ up to 2,000 workers in its first two years. The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that an out-of-state company intends to build the hog-processing facility and to hire 900 to 2,000 workers. The company says it will build an environmentally friendly building that will enhance the neighborhood. WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A Waterloo family has lost two loved ones in the past decade to accidental shootings. KWWL-TV reports the family is shocked that it happened given that they all grew up around guns, and were taught to assume guns are always loaded. Last month 27-year-old Eric Tusing was joking with friends about playing Russian Roulette. He shot himself not knowing the gun was loaded. Eric’s brother Tristan died in 2007 when a gun fell to the ground and shot him in the back. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A trooper with the Iowa State Patrol has resigned after being arrested following a drunken, late-night disturbance in which the former college football player repeatedly pounded on a female neighbor’s door. KCRG-TV reports after his arrest Patrick Steinbach received special treatment at the Iowa County Jail, where the booking officer did not take his mug shot or require him to wear a jumpsuit. The booking officer lost his job too. WINTERSET, IA (IRN) – An Iowa sheriff is sounding the alarm on mental health, saying there are people who are in desperate need of help that are not getting it, according to WHO-TV. Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes says it’s the No. 1 problem he faces in the county — more than drunk driving or other crimes. Barnes says “We’ve had people in our jail that needed mental health help. They don’t belong in a jail. But there’s no other place for them.” DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Craig Vance had a heart attack at the State Capitol three weeks ago, according to KCCI-TV. During the heart attack he lost consciousness and hit the floor. Vance is on his feet today — thanks in part to a stranger who performed CPR prior to medics arriving. Vance says he’s lucky the heart attack happened in a public place, as otherwise he would be dead. He’s recovering from open heart surgery and hopes to soon meet the man or woman who saved his life.
