IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa City man was arrested Thursday morning for drunken driving — but not before taking a Snapchat selfie with the arresting officer. The Iowa City Press Citizen reports Gilbert Phelps, 20, was pulled over for speeding just after 2 a.m. Phelps admitted that he had been smoking marijuana. While being tested, Phelps requested a Snapchat selfie with the officer. The officer obliged, and Phelps captioned the photo using a police car, a passenger car, and a tow truck emoji. WHITTEMORE, IA (IRN) – Authorities are investigating the shooting of a crop-dusting plane in northern Iowa. According to KCCI-TV, a plane owned by Steier AG Aviation was hit in a wing flap while spraying a field. The pilot landed safely. Property belonging to a suspect in the shooting has been searched and items have been seized. No arrest has been reported. WASHINGTON, D.C. (IRN) – Iowa’s farm real estate value is down, according to the USDA. Total farm real estate value including buildings averaged $8,000 per acre in 2015, down $500 from last year. Cropland value decreased to $8,200 per acre, while pastureland, at $3,400 per acre, was unchanged from a year ago. Low grain prices weakened cropland values while record high beef prices supported pastureland values. COUNCIL BLUFFS (IRN) – About 50,000 pounds of split peas covered part of Interstate 29 in western Iowa after a semi truck overturned Wednesday. The Daily Nonpariel reports Bradley Zirott, 56, of Sparta, Wisconsin, lost control and rolled the semi scattering peas across the roadway. A medical issue was likely involved. The southbound lane was closed for almost two hours as crews cleaned up the peas. INDIANOLA, IA (IRN) – A jury has awarded nearly $12 million to an Indianola woman who says her former co-workers at a toy company subjected her to graphic sexual comments and other harassment.  KCCI-TV reports Danielle Rennenger is a former employee of ToyQuest in Indianola, a subsidiary of a Hong Kong-based corporation. Rennenger says she feels validated. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – The U.S. Federal Court for the Southern District of Iowa has sentenced a Davenport man to seven years in prison after he pled guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.  Keelyn Stokes, 21, was seen by Davenport police throwing a gun to the ground as he and several others exited and ran from a stolen vehicle. He had a previous felony conviction. ALTA, IA (IRN) – The arrest of a Wall Lake woman could help solve a series of car burglaries and thefts across Iowa and Nebraska. KMEG-TV reports 19-year-old Alexandra Pratt was arrested after a traffic stop Tuesday morning in Alta. Police determined the car she was a passenger in was stolen and contained numerous stolen items. DES MOINES (IRN) – Republican Iowa House Speaker Kraig Paulsen said Wednesday he will step down from his leadership post at the start of the 2016 legislative session and will not seek re-election in his Linn County district next year. Paulsen, 50, has served as House Speaker since 2011. He was first elected to the Iowa Legislature in 2002.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – An off-duty Black Hawk Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash Tuesday afternoon in Waterloo. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports the driver of an SUV, 30-year-old Shawna Flippo, did not stop or look when she pulled into an intersection. She then collided with a motorcycle driven by 34-year-old Timothy Petersen, a 9-year veteran of the force. He had a wife and 5-year-old son. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) –  A Coralville man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman on his couch earlier this year. KCRG-TV reports a woman was passed out on 27-year-old Jonathan C. Cosby’s couch in May. Police said Cosby admitted to having sexual contact with the woman while she slept. He told police he knew it was wrong. Cosby faces one count of third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. DES MOINES (IRN) – A Des Moines man was arrested for murder on Tuesday after he allegedly stabbed a man in June, according to WHO-TV. 27-year-old Timothy Washington died from stab wounds following a fight that broke out during a party. 19-year-old Jonathan Brown has been charged with first-degree murder. This is the sixth homicide investigated by the Des Moines Police Department in 2015. SHELBY, IA (IRN) – One person is dead and another injured in a rollover crash near the western Iowa town of Shelby. KETV reports an SUV on a county highway went over a hill, lost control, and rolled.  One person was thrown from the vehicle, and has been hospitalized. Another person was pinned beneath the SUV and died at the scene.  Names have not been released. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – One of the six candidates for two open positions on the Charles City School Board is a convicted sex offender. The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports Doug Lindaman, 59, pled guilty in 1988 to two counts of lascivious acts with a child. Lindaman says, “my legal infraction is 28 years old and old news. I paid my debt to society.” He adds he would “ appreciate a halt to the character assassination.” URBANDALE, IA (IRN) – An Urbandale woman and a 13-year-old have been charged in a child abuse case.  WHO-TV reports 33-year-old Michelle Hagler was arrested and charged with three felony counts of child endangerment with bodily injury. The victim is an 8-year-old girl who was staying with her. A 13-year-old also living with Hagler was also charged with second-degree sex abuse and willful injury causing bodily injury. LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A motorcyclist was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital after colliding with a deer Tuesday night in rural Linn County, according to KCRG-TV. Terence McCauley, of Marion, struck the deer when it came out of a ditch. McCauley was found unresponsive in the road. He was transported by helicopter with serious injuries. DES MOINES (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that a turkey farm infected with the Avian Flu has started restocking birds. The farm, located near Manson in northwest Iowa, has completed the cleaning and disinfection process. It is the first of 77 operations impacted by the flu in Iowa to restock. 34 million birds have been killed.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A unidentified teenager was seriously injured after they ran in front of a vehicle in Davenport. KWQC-TV reports the accident happened Tuesday morning.The vehicle involved was traveling eastbound when the 14-year-old ran into the street and was hit. The teen was transported to Iowa City Hospital by helicopter with life threatening injuries. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) -Two men are in custody after police say they were involved with drug activity inside a Cedar Rapids Taco Bell.  KGAN-TV reports police were called to the Taco Bell early Tuesday morning for suspicious activity.  When police went inside they found remnants of a meth lab. No names have been released and company officials say the restaurant will be sanitized before it reopens. JOHNSTON, IA (IRN) – A student has accidentally shot herself in the leg during a drill at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston, according to the Des Moines Register. The shooting occurred Monday. Academy Director Judy Bradshaw says that the student shot herself in the thigh when drawing her gun during a drill. The bullet went through the thigh and didn’t hit any bones. LINCOLN, NE (IRN) – A 49-year-old Iowa man has been charged for the western Iowa crash death of a University of Nebraska soccer coach.  KCCI-TV reports Paul Marshall, of Modale, is charged with vehicular homicide while operating under the influence.The fatal collision occurred on May 16, when Marshall drove west on a ramp and entered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80. Marshall’s vehicle then struck one driven by Peter Underwood, who died at the scene. MAXWELL, IA (IRN) – Story County officials are searching for a woman who reportedly shot her uncle with a shotgun on Monday in Maxwell.  WHO-TV reports 66-year-old Dwight Carpenter Jr. was shot in the ankle by his niece, 33-year-old Candace Mosley of Ames. Mosely fled the scene on a motorcycle with the license plate “MOMGRL.” INDIANOLA, IA (IRN) – Authorities are investigating an alleged sexual abuse incident that took place between two camp employees. KCCI-TV reports the alleged incident happened at Camp Wesley Woods south of Indianola on July 31. The victim is an 18-year-old woman and the suspect is an adult man who were both employees. The camp is a retreat center that is part of the United Methodist Church. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An afternoon fire damaged two homes in Cedar Rapids Monday. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports crews found flames on two sides of one home, damaging interior rooms and a porch. The siding on a neighboring house melted from the heat. Two people were home at the time of the fire, and fled after a warning by a neighbor. Two dogs also escaped, but a cat perished in the fire. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Despite ongoing efforts to curb high-risk drinking and the reputation it brings to campus, the University of Iowa remains runner-up on the Princeton Review’s annual list of top party schools. This is Iowa’s fifth straight year in the top five. The nation’s top party school? The University of Illinois.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The National Park Service has shelved a blistering internal report that details a “decade of dysfunction” as the agency allowed dozens of illegal construction projects to cause damage to an ancient burial ground in Iowa that tribes consider sacred. KCCI-TV reports the document blasts the Park Service’s stewardship of the Effigy Mounds National Monument. ESTHERVILLE, IA (IRN) – The Estherville man charged with first-degree murder in the death of Thomas Bortvit has pled not guilty. KTIV-TV reports 18-year-old Lee Samuel Christensen filed the plea Monday morning. The family of 19-year old Thomas Bortvit reported him missing on June 6th and his body was found the next day in rural Emmet County. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 14-year-old Carlisle boy who was reported missing while tubing in West Des Moines on Sunday evening has been found. The boy was with his friend and his friend’s parents on the Raccoon River when storms popped up. Lightning scared the boy and he left the group. West Des Moines fire and police had a boat, jet skis, a helicopter and walking crews searching the river. Meanwhile, the boy had hitchhiked home, and is safe. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A 68-year-old Arkansas man died in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 29 in western Iowa. KCCI-TV reports Richard Gardial of Hot Springs, Arkansas, was pronounced dead Sunday morning after striking a guardrail in Council Bluffs. Gardial failed to negotiate a curve while riding with other motorcyclists. ADAMS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Clean up continues in much of southern Iowa after severe weather moved through the area Sunday.  WHO-TV reports a tornado touched down in Adams County in southwest Iowa around 6:30 p.m. A barn, outbuildings, and silos were destroyed, and farm equipment was flipped into the air. There were no reports of injuries. POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Three deputies were injured Sunday morning while making an arrest at a gas station in rural Polk County.  Deputies responded to two intoxicated males harassing a clerk. One of the suspects, 22-year-old Matthew Hinton of Richton, Mississippi resisted arrest. A taser was deployed twice, but Hinton pulled the probes out both times. He was detained, but not before breaking one deputy’s arm, while the other deputies suffered abrasions. CASS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Two people were injured in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon on I-80 near Atlantic. Their motorcycle suffered a flat tire. 37-year-old Dominic R. Napoli of Butler, New Jersey and his passenger Jennifer A. Napoli, 37, also of Butler were thrown from the motorcycle. Both sustained incapacitating injuries, but are expected to recover. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Davenport police responded to a fatal shooting at an apartment complex early Sunday morning, according to WQAD-TV. One person was transported to the hospital, and later died. Officers blocked off an intersection all morning, and were seen carrying bags out of an apartment. The name of the person killed has not been released.

DES MOINES (IRN) – An 11-year-old Des Moines boy was injured after a bullet grazed his head, nearly hitting his left eye.  KCCI-TV reports the boy was playing in his backyard with family and friends Friday afternoon. His mother heard a loud bang and saw her son fall to the ground. He was unconscious and bleeding. A neighbor boy admitted to firing his mom’s .22. The wounded boy was taken to the hospital and later released. BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – A Burlington man has died in a lawn mowing accident. KHQA-TV reports deputies were called to the scene of an unconscious man under a lawn mower on Friday. James Elder, 84, was pronounced dead at the scene. His lawn mower had tipped over while he was mowing. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – An Illinois man has died after a wood chipper accident last week in Davenport. Byron Mayeux, 28 of Milan was pronounced dead at the scene. Police do not suspect foul play. FORT MADISON, IA (IRN) – More than 500 Iowa inmates have been moved to a new maximum security prison in Fort Madison, according to KGAN-TV. The transfer took about five hours on Saturday. The new $166 million prison was supposed to open in March 2014, but it had sat empty for more than a year while officials worked to solve a number of problems related to construction.
