WINNESHIEK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 62-year-old man spent the night in a cornfield after a northeast Iowa crash. KIMT-TV reports Mark Stutzman, 62, of Canton, Minnesota, was driving a 2013 Ford Focus Wednesday night when he lost control on a county road. The vehicle entered a ditch, hit a field driveway and landed in a cornfield. Stutzman was transported by ambulance and cited for failure to maintain control.

FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – A homicide investigation is underway in a fatal Fort Dodge shooting. KCCI-TV reports a suspect hasn’t been identified.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City school leaders have released a video where an employee driving a school van hit and injured a 12-year-old student. KCRG-TV reports the video shows the driver was texting when the student was hit. The driver is currently on administrative leave and will eventually work within the district in a non-driving role. The student hit will be ok.

IOWA (IRN) – It’s still early, but sports gambling in Iowa is quickly paying off. Iowa casinos processed close to $40 million in sports wagers in September, the first full month of legalized sports gambling.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Polk County leaders on Friday announced some exciting news regarding the future of the Lauridsen Skatepark. WHO-TV reports they announced they have hit their fundraising goal to build the new skate park in Des Moines. The project needed $6.3 million to get all the proposed features and it ended up with $6.5 million. The Lauridsen Skatepark will be the largest in the country.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – At least one person was hurt during a stabbing early Friday morning in Waterloo. KCRG-TV reports the man was stabbed during a fight.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A school in Dubuque was put on lockdown Thursday morning. KCRG-TV reports Washington Middle School put their safety procedures in effect after Candace Boots, 37, was found outside of the school in possession of drug paraphernalia. She threatened to punch a school administrator.

CARROLL, IA (IRN) – A small town newspaper is in serious financial hardship after defending their investigative report that put a police officer under scrutiny. In July of 2017, the Carroll Times Herald published an article about police officer Jacob Smith and his relationships with multiple teenage girls. Smith, who is no longer on the police department, filed a libel lawsuit. The paper won, but still was stuck with legal fees, leaving its future in limbo. They have started a go fund me page.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa City high school student has been arrested after allegedly showing another student a toy gun in the high school parking lot. KGAN-TV reports the juvenile student was charged with Carrying a Toy Gun in City Limits and released to a parent.

PRAIRIE CITY, IA (IRN) – Under a Trump administration initiative, more federal lands are opening for hunting and fishing in Iowa. The Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge is opening 300 acres for hunting purposes near Prairie City.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A driver has been given probation and suspended prison time for the crash death of another driver in Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports 35-year-old Grant Uhe was sentenced Tuesday to two years of probation and a suspended sentence of 10 years in prison. He’d pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide by reckless driving. Uhe was driving more than 75 mph in a 30 mph zone last year before his pickup truck crashed into a car driven by 19-year-old Tyler Wilcox. Police say Wilcox died later at a hospital.

MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – The driver who police say hit and killed a bicyclist in August in Muscatine has been arrested. WQAD-TV reports Terry Gough, 52, from Morning Sun, allegedly hit a bicyclist, didn’t stop to help, and later drove by the scene once emergency vehicles arrived.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A man was killed in an accident in Dubuque County on Wednesday. KCRG-TV reports a 61-year-old man was working on the frame of a dump truck when the dump box came down upon him.

WAUKEE, IA (IRN) – Vice President Mike Pence returned to Iowa Wednesday with a familiar message: Democrats in Congress need to pass the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement. Pence said, “I came to Iowa today to turn up the heat…it’s time for the Democrats in Congress to do their job, put politics aside and pass the USMCA this year.”

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Elton John will be stopping in Des Moines in 2020 for his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. The June 11 show at Wells Fargo Arena has tickets available starting today. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A death investigation is underway after human remains were discovered at a homeless camp in Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports an investigation is underway.

ST. LOUIS, MO (IRN) – Former Iowa running back Derrick Mitchell has died after being involved in a car accident last Friday. Mitchell was just 24 years old. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Mitchell was a member of the Iowa football team from 2013-16.

FOREST CITY, IA (IRN) – Six former employees are suing Winnebago Industries for age and disability discrimination and retaliation. KIMT-TV reports the six were among 35 Winnebago employees laid off in July 2018. They claim that almost all of those fired employees were older, and they were replaced by younger workers.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa State Patrol is warning drivers to watch out for deer on the roadways after responding to 235 crashes involving animals in October and November 2018. October and November are the peak months for Iowans to see deer. Officials say never veer for the deer. When drivers do, they often roll their vehicles.

NEBRASKA/IOWA (IRN) – Forecasters say a wintry storm system could drop up to 10 inches of snow on northwest Nebraska later this week. The same system also could drop considerable snow on northwestern and northern Iowa on Friday or early Saturday.
