WAVERLY, IA (IRN) – A Minneapolis man has been imprisoned for roaming a dorm at a northeast Iowa college and touching sleeping students. Bremer County District Court records say 23-year-old Bryan Malone was sentenced Monday to more than 14 years. He’d pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and other crimes. He’s also been ordered to register as a sex offender.

OXFORD, IA (IRN) – An Oxford, Iowa man has been charge with attempted murder. KWWL-TV reports 20-year-old Salomen Allen was arrested Friday afternoon. Allen allegedly followed the victim, who he knows, to a parking lot where the victim works. He then shot at the victim, striking the victim’s car. The suspect fled the scene in a Chevy Equinox. The vehicle was spotted by law enforcement, and a short pursuit ensued before he was taken into custody. No one was injured.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An elderly Cedar Rapids couple were injured when a tree fell on their Airbnb rental while on vacation to Memphis, Tennessee. KCRG-TV reports massive storms tore through the state, leaving many without a home or power. The falling tree injured Cleo and Kathie Montgomery, pinning them to the ground. Cleo has a broken pelvis, and both of Kathie’s legs were broken — one had to be amputated.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new study says Iowa water could cause cancer and that nitrates in the state’s drinking water are to blame. The study, conducted by the nonprofit research group Iowa Policy Project, claims nitrates in Iowa drinking water may be tied to 300 cases of cancer each year.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – A new report released by the website Rent Café shows Iowans where to find the most expensive and most affordable places to rent in the Des Moines metro. The report found that Ankeny is the most expensive place to find an apartment and the recent spike has happened fairly quickly. Over the last five years, the average price for an apartment in Ankeny has jumped by 20 percent. What’s the average price of an apartment in Ankeny? $1,123 per month. Comparatively, Urbandale is a bargain at only $836 per month.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s unemployment rate remained at 2.4% in May, just where it’s been for nearly a year. Iowa Workforce Development reported Friday that the rate hasn’t budged since July 2018. Iowa’s rate is tied with New Hampshire for the third lowest in the U.S., behind Vermont and North Dakota.

LAKOTA, IA (IRN) – A worker at the site of a wind farm under construction in the north-central Iowa town of Lakota has died after being run over by a semitrailer. KWWL-TV reports the 51-year-old man was from Texas.

AMES, IA (IRN) – The Sigma Gamma Rho sorority at Iowa State University has been sanctioned for hazing, according to KCCI-TV. The group can continue operating, but could be suspended if it faces another violation.

HAMILTON COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The state of Iowa is still trying to collect a 29-year-old seatbelt ticket from a Minnesotan. WHO-TV reports Amy Rush is now in her 40s. In 1990 she was a runaway, hitching a ride with an older man through Hamilton County. The man got pulled over for speeding, and she got a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. Rush says she’s not paying up. She says the officer should have been concerned about her safety, not her seatbelt. Officials say she should expect the letters to keep coming. There’s no statute of limitations on the offense.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The University of Iowa has obtained the largest contract in the school’s history from NASA, totaling around $115 million. This contract will be used to help study the interactions between the Earth and Sun through magnetic fields. The study’s main goal is to show how the sun impacts space and the planets that surround it.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A driver is in critical condition after refusing to stop for a police squad car and crashing into a parked car and Cedar Rapids home. KGAN-TV reports officers tried to stop the vehicle shortly before midnight but refused to stop.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle in Pottawattamie County. KCCI-TV reports William Shepard, 55, of Council Bluffs was found unresponsive in the grass at the side of the road. Deputies believed it was a fatal hit-and-run. About five hours later, former Council Bluffs police officer Robert Christensen, 56, contacted deputies and said that he may be the one that struck Shepard. Christensen said he thought he had a struck a deer and saw on the news that a bicyclist was hit. A piece of his vehicle had been found at the scene.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines mother is facing felony charges after being accused of leaving her two young children home alone and without food or water last week. WHO-TV reports 24-year-old Juawar Kallo was booked into the Polk County Jail Tuesday.

TAMA COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A derailment involving a Union Pacific train hauling sugar and soda occurred yesterday in Tama County. Union Pacific officials said 28 cars were involved and there were no hazardous materials.

ROCK ISLAND, IA (IRN) – Barge traffic is moving again on the Mississippi River after months of disruptions due to flooding. All of the locks on the Mississippi River managed by the Rock Island District of the Army Corps of Engineers are back open.

SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – One person has died after a motorcycle crash in Sioux City Tuesday. KCAU-TV reports the motorcycle was going at a high rate of speed, left the road, and hit a light pole. The motorcyclist was taken to MercyOne where he later died from his injuries.

OMAHA, NE (IRN) – Federal officials say tougher standards for school bus drivers could have prevented deaths in a 2017 school bus fire in Oakland, Iowa. The 74-year-old bus driver Donald Hendricks, who died in the fire along with his 16-year-old passenger Megan Klindt, had mobility issues that limited his ability to evacuate the bus. National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt said, “by God if you’re a school district you have a responsibility to make sure that you’re providing the oversight that those kids deserve.”

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man behind several Des Moines metro convenience store robberies is behind bars thanks to social media. KCCI-TV reports Dan Toomey, 55, is charged with five counts of second-degree robbery after people recognized him after surveillance photos were posted to Facebook.

ESTHERVILLE, IA (IRN) – An Emmet County man has been accused of stealing nearly $30,000 from a north-central Iowa high school booster club he helped manage. The Sioux City Journal reports that Timothy Loock, of Estherville, has been charged with first-degree theft.

MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – An early morning fire yesterday caused damage to a single-family home in Muscatine, according to KCRG. Residents were safely outside by the time emergency crews arrived, but five dogs were still inside. The dogs were saved, though one had to be revived using modified CPR by a firefighter. Four others received oxygen on-site using pet-sized masks.
