FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – An arrest has been made in a double homicide that happened early Monday morning in Fort Dodge when two brothers were found dead in an alley. Tanner J. King, 28, was taken into custody Thursday. King has a lengthy criminal record and has been in the news before. In 2012, King was injured as an inmate in the Webster County Jail when he tried to jump from one roof to another and fell 40 feet. He is under a suicide watch.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating a shooting that sent a teenager to the hospital Wednesday night. WHO-TV reports police responded to a report of gunshots and a few minutes later Blank Hospital notified officers they were treating a gunshot victim. The victim is a 17-year-old who suffered a gunshot wound to the arm.

BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – Three people are in jail after a standoff that lasted almost six hours on Wednesday night. WQAD-TV reports police received a tip about stolen property at a home in Bettendorf. One woman was arrested as she tried to flee, a second woman was arrested when the search warrant was executed, and after the standoff a man was found hiding in the attic.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – An Iowa school district criticized for discriminating against minorities is investigating reports that a teacher wore blackface at a public Halloween party. The Quad-City Times reports that Walcott Elementary teacher Megan Luloff wore makeup to appear to be African-American at the party Friday night at the Walcott American Legion.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa’s prison system announced a plan to suspend services at four facilities in order to reduce the Department of Corrections’ fiscal year 2017 budget by $5.5 million. The Gazette reports the changes are required by law and impact facilities in Harpers Ferry, Clarinda, Fort Madison and Sheldon. The cuts comply with legislation that is expected to reduce staff positions by 3 percent.

HINTON, IA (IRN) – A semi versus pedestrian accident happened this morning in the Plymouth County town of Hinton. The pedestrian was crossing a highway towards a Casey’s Gas Station when a semi-truck struck him. He sustained non-life threatening but serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – The driver who was shot in an officer-involved shooting in Davenport has died, according to WQAD-TV. A deputy initiated a traffic stop, and a struggle ensued between the deputy and the driver, 27-year-old Robert Mitchell. The deputy ended up shooting Mitchell. A woman in the car says the shooting was not justified.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man faces numerous charges after he sped through Des Moines and crashed a stolen car into a vehicle with a woman and baby inside. KCCI-TV reports 25-year-old Brandon Lee St. Peter was speeding, a chase ensued, and police abandoned the pursuit because it was too dangerous. A Good Samaritan pulled the baby from the wreckage. Everyone is OK, and St. Peter faces numerous charges.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Emergency room physicians are protesting an Iowa Medicaid billing change that they say harms low-income patients and hospitals. KGAN-TV reports starting Aug. 1, Iowa Medicaid no longer allowed emergency rooms to submit claims for treating some conditions that turn out to be non-emergent. They say the change unfairly puts the burden of self-diagnosis on patients and discourages them from seeking treatment. Physicians are concerned patients will be hit with surprise bills and hospitals won’t be reimbursed for necessary treatment.

DEEP RIVER, IA (IRN) – A Poweshiek County farmer’s final harvest came in over the weekend, days after his death. WHO-TV reports Kenny Keller died unexpectedly last Thursday at the age of 78. Over the weekend a group of 20 friends and neighbors put their own harvests on hold and came together to bring in a final harvest for Keller. A celebration of life was held on Sunday night for Keller after the work was finished.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A man shot during a struggle with a sheriff’s deputy in Davenport has died. KCCI-TV reports 27-year-old Robert Mitchell died at a hospital Tuesday night. A deputy pulled over Mitchell’s vehicle on I-80, a chase ensued, and an altercation occurred that led to the deputy shooting Mitchell.

BUCHANAN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old boy was seriously hurt after crashing head-on into a farm combine Tuesday near Winthrop. KGAN-TV reports the boy was airlifted to the hospital. His passenger, a 15-year-old girl, was transported with minor injuries. The combine driver was treated and released at the scene.

NEWTON, IA (IRN) – Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the Walnut Creek Apartments in Newton to go up in flames Monday. KCCI-TV reports resident Arlene Craver, 94, said heavy smoke filled the air as all 24 units were evacuated. She said, “the fireman came in and banged on the door and said, ‘Get out!’” Craver said she lost her husband just weeks ago, and now, she doesn’t have a home. All residents were evacuated safely, but some pets did not survive.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Dubuque will soon begin construction to improve cell phone and broadband signals in the city, but some residents are objecting. KCRG-TV reports at the most recent city council meeting, community members showed up to express their concern about potential health risks from the 5G frequency emissions. City officials say it is too late to get out of their contract, and the health risks are minimal.

GALENA TERRITORY, IL (IRN) – University of Iowa officials have santioned the Sigma Nu fraternity for damage caused to properties in Illinois. The fraternity rented out several properties in the Galena Territory, a lakeside community in Illinois in 2017. By the end of the weekend, they caused more than $100,000 in damages.

ORANGE CITY, IA (IRN) – In a video posted by an Ocheyedan-based Christian group called Rescue the Perishing, group leader Paul Dorr burned several LGBTQ+ books he had checked out from the Orange City Public Library. KCAU-TV reports Dorr calls the books “shameful” and “wicked.” The library is considering how to respond.

FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Two men shot and killed in an alley early Monday morning in Fort Dodge were brothers. WHO-TV reports police believe it was an isolated incident involving people who knew each other and there is no danger to the public.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Ia (IRN) – A 28-year-old from Cedar Rapids has been sentenced to 64 months in prison for aiding and abetting the distribution of heroin. Eddy Watt admitted he and other dealers in his group had at least eighty customers and made an average of 20 sales of heroin per day. Two other men are awaiting sentencing. The house where the group stored their heroin was within 1,000 feet of an elementary school.

DES MOINES, IA (IRNN) – An 84-year-old man says he is blessed to be alive Monday after a car crashed through a wall into his Des Moines home. KCCI-TV reports McRay Love was home at the time. The impact pinned him against a wall and injured his legs. Love is hard of hearing, but he heard the bang as the car plowed through his home Sunday afternoon. He says, “I was afraid. I was afraid for a little while.”

JOHNSTON, IA (IRN) – First Sergeant Jeffrey Lewis made Iowa history on Sunday. He’s the first African American to be promoted to Sergeant Major in the Iowa Army National Guard. Sergeant Major Lewis enlisted 37 years ago as a combat medic. He was deployed twice during his career, supporting Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
