DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – There is heavy police presence in a neighborhood in Davenport. WQAD-TV reports police have been called to a report of a possible shooting, and one person has been taken to the hospital.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – The Ottumwa Fire Department responded to two house fires early Friday morning, according to KTVO-TV. The second house that caught on fire is directly behind the first. Officials say this is the fourth or fifth time the fire department has had to put out a fire at the first house, and the fires are under investigation. No one lives in either house.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A Waterloo woman serving a life sentence for cutting the throats of her young sons, killing one, is asking for a new trial. The Courier reports that 44-year-old Michelle Kehoe wants a new trial because her diminished mental state kept her from taking the stand in 2009. Kehoe attacked the boys, killing one, and then turned the knife on herself.

WILTON, IA (IRN) – An eastern Iowa steel mill has interrupted operations after an explosion injured four workers. KWQC-TV reports that Gerdau Ameristeel suspended operations at its plant in Wilton following the Wednesday explosion. The four injured people were taken to hospitals, and two have since been released. The company hasn’t given details about the explosion or what caused it.

KLEMME, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Environmental Protection Commission rejected a petition seeking tougher environmental standards for concentrated animal feeding facilities, or CAFO’s. Gloria Goll, of Klemme, is one person who wants tougher standards. One CAFO is ¼ mile from her home, and there are ten within six miles, and there are plans to build another. Goll says “ I’m not going to drop this. I’m going be like a flea on a dog’s back, I will not quit.”

GRINNELL, IA (IRN) – A time capsule has been discovered at the Grinnell-Newburg Elementary School in Grinnell. WHO-TV reports the school removed the capsule hidden in their building 100 years ago when it was built. A committee was planning a centennial celebration when they discovered it had been placed in the cornerstone of the building in 1917. The school will open it at a ceremony on October 6th.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Waterloo Police have arrested a man for a crash that killed a baby last month. KWWL-TV reports 36-year-old Derrick Johnson has been charged with homicide by vehicle and operating under the influence. Johnson had a blood alcohol level of .069 and tested positive for cocaine and marijuana. He ran a stop sign and collided with a van. A baby who wasn’t in a child safety seat died.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – Torrential rain fell in Ottumwa early Thursday morning, leading to a dangerous flash flooding event across the city. KTVO-TV reports over five inches of rain fell in the city limits, and seven inches between Ottumwa and Agency. There are reports of over a foot of standing water on some streets. Motorists became stranded in one part of town and one car was left submerged with water over the hood of the vehicle.

CLAY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The mother whose decision to flee with twin daughters triggered an Iowa Amber Alert has been arrested. KCCI-TV reports 25-year-old Danica Arzaga is being held at the Clay County Jail on kidnapping charges. The children’s father has custody of the twins. Arzaga’s sister says there is an ongoing dispute between the father and Arzaga, causing the mother to fear for the girls’ safety–“she wanted to protect her kids, and that’s what she did.”

SPIRIT LAKE, IOWA (IRN) – A man has died after crashing his pickup truck near Spirit Lake during a police chase. The Sioux City Journal reports that 26-year-old Colton Baschke, of Spirit Lake, died in the Tuesday crash after being thrown from his truck. He was fleeing police after an attempted traffic stop.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – The Davenport Police Department has asked the City Council for permission to buy 150 body cameras, according to WQAD-TV. The cameras, which would cost $550,000, are worn on the officer’s shirts and the data is uploaded through a wireless system. Officers say the cameras would help them be more transparent with community members.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Dads are learning how to do their daughter’s hair in Cedar Rapids, according to KCRG-TV. The Cedar Rapids Public Library held a Daddy Daughter Hair Salon day with local stylists. Dads learned how to braid hair, do a messy bun and a French Twist. The class is part of the library’s Family Matters program.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Brazil has reinstated a tariff on ethanol, and Senators want a quick response. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is leading a bipartisan group of legislators urging trade representatives to respond to the 20 percent tariff on all imports after the first 158 million gallons sold. In 2016, the U.S. exported 264 million gallons to Brazil, which is set to increase this year. Ethanol producers call the tariff a trade barrier threatening 750 million dollars in U.S. exports.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says she supports the latest Republican effort in Congress to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Reynolds says the bill gives Iowa flexibility and “empowers consumers.” Many health care advocacy groups oppose the measure, warning that millions would lose coverage and others would face skimpier insurance policies and higher premiums for pregnancy and pre-existing conditions.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Missouri state trooper was sentenced Tuesday in connection with the death of Brandon Ellingson of Clive. KCCI-TV reports Anthony Piercy was sentenced to ten days in jail, probation and community service. Ellingson died in Piercy’s custody in 2014 after Piercy arrested him on suspicion of drunk boating. Piercy did not properly secure Ellingson’s life vest, and he drowned after Piercy put him in handcuffs. Ellingson’s father called the verdict a joke.

CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Falls Police are investigating the death of a teenage boy, according to KWWL-TV. Police Chief Jeff Olson says a 17-year-old killed himself this week and they are investigating whether bullying played a factor in his death. Posts from multiple people on the boy’s Facebook page tell him he’s a loser and should go kill himself. Olson says they are working with the County Attorney to see if there is a criminal case.

CLAY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A statewide Amber Alert Tuesday for three girls missing out of Clay County has been cancelled. Danica Arzaga returned the girls to a family member before fleeing. Police are now searching for Arzaga. She’s 5’3″ inches tall with black hair and brown eyes, with a large eagle tattoo on her chest.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Teachers at a middle school in Ankeny have grown tired of watching students go hungry at lunch because they have negative account balances, according to the Des Moines Register. To help, teachers are pitching in money to help feed the kids. One 8th grade teacher says, “we know it’s going to help them through their day and be a more productive student, rather than think about how hungry they are.”

VINTON, IA (IRN) – A garbage truck driver was killed in a crash this morning near Vinton, according to KWWL-TV. Two people were thrown out of the garbage truck when it collided with another vehicle. There is no word on other injuries.

LOCKRIDGE, IA (IRN) – A Lockridge man could spend 25 years in jail for stealing less than $1,000 from a local retailer, according to WQAD-TV. 25-year-old Tyler James Watson committed ten thefts–all misdemeanors–from the Fairfield Walmart. Collectively, the thefts constitute Ongoing Criminal Conduct, a Class B felony.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City police are looking for the driver of a semi-truck that hit a 13-year-old girl Monday and left the scene. KGAN-TV reports the girl reportedly stepped into the crosswalk at an intersection just moments before the truck ran a red light, running over her foot and spinning her around. The driver left, and the teen was able to walk out of the intersection with minor injuries.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Someone carved a swastika into an elevator at Drake University Saturday evening, according to KCCI-TV. Offensive racial slurs were also written on a white board outside a student’s room. All have been removed and campus police are investigating.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The West Des Moines City Council has banned the use of fireworks in the city, according to WHO-TV. After allowing fireworks for six hours on the Fourth of July, the city received many complaints, resulting in the ban. The city of Des Moines is also considering a ban.

NORTH LIBERTY, IA (IRN) – A North Liberty woman is facing a child endangerment charge after allegedly choking a 12-year-old boy. KCRG-TV reports the boy told officers he got into an argument with 41-year-old Christina Dochterman and she choked him, making it difficult to breathe. When police arrived, Dochterman smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. When officers asked her how much she had to drink, she replied “not enough.” She was arrested.
