IOWA COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Severe storms hit eastern Iowa early Tuesday morning and again Tuesday evening with a tornado and funnel clouds spotted, according to KCII-Radio. At about 6 p.m. a State Trooper who was flying an airplane reported a tornado in Iowa County, near South Amana. Funnel clouds were also seen near Conroy and Homestead.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics accidentally posted online for two years the names, admission dates and medical record numbers of around 5,300 current and former patients. The files didn’t contain clinical information, Social Security or credit card numbers. Patients impacted were notified by letter.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A woman was shot several times in the stomach Monday night in Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports a passerby found the woman outside of a strip mall. The woman told police she was shot at a nearby apartment complex. She was able to give police a description of the man who shot her, and a vehicle description. He was taken into custody a short time later.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – Three dogs died after being left in a hot car in Ottumwa over the weekend, according to KTVO-TV. Ottumwa hosted the annual Southeastern Iowa Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Show on Saturday and Sunday, and police believe the dogs had been part of the show. The investigation is ongoing.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man called West Des Moines Police yesterday and told them he had barricaded himself inside Valley West Mall and he was armed with explosives. WHO-TV reports when police arrived, they couldn’t find him. After tracking his phone, they found him nearby in a dumpster, with no explosives. He is undergoing mental evaluation.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Several strangers worked together to try to save a Cascade man’s life after a motorcycle crash in Dubuque on Monday, according to KCRG-TV. The crash killed the motorcycle rider. An off-duty Dubuque firefighter was first on scene, and was soon joined by two women who started doing chest compressions and respiration. One of the women says she hopes the man’s final memories included the kindness of strangers.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Police are working to identify a body that was pulled from the Mississippi River near Dubuque on Sunday. WQAD-TV reports the body could not be immediately identified because of decomposition. Authorities say it could be 19-year-old Allison Morgan who disappeared January 2. Witnesses say she abandoned her car on a bridge, climbed over the rail, and disappeared five miles upstream of where the body was found.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A motorcyclist is dead after a crash involving a car in Dubuque yesterday, according to KWWL-TV. The cause of the crash isn’t known. The victim was taken to a local hospital, but did not survive.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new federal courthouse is going to be constructed at the former site of the Riverfront YMCA in downtown Des Moines, but the city of Des Moines isn’t happy. WHO-TV reports city officials say the site is one of the best pieces of real estate in Iowa, and it will now be off the tax roles. The city had a riverfront experience with cafés and restaurants in mind.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines Firefighter has a new nickname after making two special deliveries this month. KCCI-TV reports Des Moines fire engineer Brian Schmitz is now being called “the Stork” after he helped deliver two babies. After 13 years on the department, Schmitz had never delivered a baby until he delivered two in a span of just weeks. Both babies are doing fine.

WEST BRANCH, IA (IRN) – A driver died in a crash on Interstate 80 after crashing into a bridge support column near West Branch. The Iowa State Patrol reports the driver went into the median, hit a bridge support and was thrown from the vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Journey. The Journey then caught fire.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Animal Rescue League helped Des Moines Police to remove 85 chickens and roosters from a property on the east side of Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports Mariano Martinez Ramirez has been charged with felony animal contest and possession of a contest device among other charges. The roosters were used for illegal cockfighting.

DECATUR COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A 69-year-old man died and two children were hospitalized Saturday after the man lost control of his pickup truck in rural Decatur County and hit a telephone pole. The Iowa State Patrol reports James Young lost traction on a gravel road, slid sideways, landed in a ditch and struck the pole. Young, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the truck and killed. The condition of the children is unknown.

NEW VIRGINIA, IA (IRN) – Fire investigators in the town of New Virginia are working to determine what caused a house to catch fire Sunday. WHO-TV reports the abandoned house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. They suspect arson.

CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – A 15-year-old Charles City boy fatally injured in an ATV crash earlier this month has donated his organs. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Logan Luft was pronounced brain dead on Wednesday. Logan’s organs went to five different people. Logan won’t be able to pursue his dream of winning a state wrestling title, but a friend who won two titles plans to donate his medals so Logan can be buried with them.

BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – One Iowa company thinks there’s money to be made on the sunny roof of the Burlington Public Works building. The Hawk Eye reports that Moxie Solar, a North Liberty solar energy company, is in talks with the city of Burlington about putting solar panels on the building. If approved, the city could save up to 10% on its energy bill.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 13-year-old male was pulled from the Birdland Marina in Des Moines on Friday. WHO-TV reports the incident is being investigated, but there is no indication of criminal activity. The victim’s name has not been released.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Three people were injured during a shooting near a Wendy’s in Cedar Rapids Saturday night. KCRG-TV reports after the shooting, two of the victims ran to the Wendy’s for safety. A witness says the shooter told the victims, “you know, what goes around comes around.” The witness knew the victims and believes the shooting was in retaliation for a homicide at a Cedar Rapids Walmart earlier this week.

MAXWELL, IA (IRN) – A man was taken to the hospital following a fire in Maxwell Saturday. KWWL-TV reports The garage was damaged, and investigators are working to determine what sparked the fire. The owners of the home were able to make it out in time, but one person was taken to the hospital with burns on his arm after trying to save his truck from the burning garage.

LINCOLN, NE (IRN) – Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol and Iowa State Patrol arrested a motorcyclist who led them on a high speed chase on Interstate 80, starting in Lincoln, Nebraska, and ending in Iowa. When speeds exceeded 100 mph, Nebraska troopers backed off, and a helicopter joined the chase. After the motorcyclist entered Iowa, Iowa troopers were able to stop him. He ran, but was soon caught. 22-year old Devon Brogdon, of Omaha, was turned over to Nebraska troopers.
