DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Runnells man who pled guilty for conspiring to transport a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity was sentenced to life in prison Friday. 51-year-old Michael Lee Williams pled guilty of conspiring to transport a minor from Minnesota to Polk County with the intent to engage in unlawful sexual activity, and that, at the time he committed the offense, he was a registered sex offender.

LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – One person was killed and another injured in a motorcycle/car accident in rural Linn County Friday. KWWL-TV reports a 56-year-old woman was making a turn when she was struck by a 23-year-old man on a motorcycle. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman driver of the vehicle has minor injuries.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police and a fire department water rescue team have recovered a body from the Birdland Marina, according to WHO-TV. The identity of the victim has not yet been determined, and the incident is under investigation.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 4-year-old Des Moines girl accidentally shot herself in the leg. KCCI-TV reports the girl found the firearm underneath her parents’ bed and took the gun into her room and ended up shooting herself in the thigh. The parents might face charges.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An Iowa woman charged with voting twice for Donald Trump has pled guilty to election misconduct. KCRG-TV reports 56-year-old Terri Lynn Rote turned in two absentee ballots before the election because she believed Trump’s unsubstantiated claims that the election was rigged and that her first ballot would be changed to a vote for Hillary Clinton. She was arrested at a satellite voting location in Des Moines, attempting to vote the second ballot. Attorneys are recommending two years of probation and community service.

OMAHA, NE (IRN) – An Omaha man has been arrested for allegedly making threats against Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst. The arrest was made this morning. The Omaha Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested 64-year-old Robert William Simet. He was apprehended by the FBI for making threats to assault Senator Ernst.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Dubuque toddler is recovering after a wolf attacked her. KCRG-TV reports two-year-old Addelyn Walker was visiting her great grandmother in May and the wolf was caged on her property. It grabbed Addelyn through the cage and severely injured her arm. The wolf was put down after the attack. Addelyn is facing two more surgeries.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A baby who was injured in a June 25 collision in Winnebago County has now died. KIMT-TV reports Joseph Ebeling, who was 26 days old at the time of the crash, was flown to Iowa City for treatment and was pronounced dead Wednesday at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. McKenna Blong, the driver of the vehicle Joseph was in, ran a stop sign and their vehicle was hit by an oncoming car.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Fireworks sent two Des Moines men to the hospital yesterday, according to KCCI-TV. One suffered injuries to his face and left hand, while the other injured his right hand. Neighbors say the two men were setting off fireworks while holding them in their hands.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A group of 19 state attorneys general, including Iowa’s Tom Miller, are suing Education Secretary Betsy DeVos for delaying an overhaul of rules to erase the federal student debt of borrowers defrauded by for-profit colleges. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, who is leading the lawsuit says, “Her decision to cancel vital protections for students and taxpayers is a betrayal of her office’s responsibility and a violation of federal law.”

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is part of a rap music video, according to CNN. “Droppin'” by Des Moines rapper Will Keeps was released Thursday. The message is a community-wide call to end gun violence. Reynolds says, “It’s moving, it’s factual and it’s what we’re facing … and it’s what we have to do as a community.” Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, a Des Moines police chief, and a pastor also participated.

CASCADE, IA (IRN) – Multiple agencies responded Thursday night to a report of a suspicious package at the Dollar General store in Cascade. KCRG-TV reports police closed several roads, brought in a bomb sniffing dog, and bomb technicians to investigate the black plastic container. After their investigation, it was determined that the suspicious package was actually a case of power tools.

CHICAGO, IL (IRN) – A suspect in the murder of a Charles City man has been arrested in Chicago. KWWL-TV reports 36-year-old Antoine Williams was arrested in Chicago Wednesday night. Williams is accused of killing Nathaniel Fleming in Charles City on June 30.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – The fuse on fireworks in the city of Davenport has fizzled out. The Quad City Times reports after giving the new state law that permitted fireworks use and sale a trial run, the Davenport City Council has decided to reinforce its previous ban on their use. Davenport has experienced five serious injuries to people, two structure fires, one vehicle fire, and four major fires outside of a building, all caused by fireworks.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 29-year-old woman was killed in Des Moines after an overnight officer-involved shooting in which she fled from officers and fired a handgun. Tiffany Potter was shot around 2 a.m. Wednesday by police after attempting to evade them. She fired at least one round, although it is unclear whether it was aimed toward the officers. Three officers have been put on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has eliminated eight positions in response to a $1.2 million budget cut. KCCI-TV reports the forestry unit was dissolved, and they eliminated the bureau chief position. The state geologist will be transferred to the University of Iowa, and the Trail Crew program was killed, among other cuts.

FARLEY, IA (IRN) – A thunderstorm moved through eastern Iowa Wednesday night, generating multiple funnel clouds and strong winds. KCRG-TV reports none of the funnel clouds touched down to form a tornado, and high winds knocked down 20 to 30 trees in the Dubuque County town of Farley. There were no reports of injuries.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Dozens of inmates at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison were involved in a “large fight” Saturday. WQAD-TV reports approximately 50 inmates were involved in the incident. No correctional officers were injured, but there were several minor injuries to inmates. A tennis racket was reportedly involved.

BONDURANT, IA (IRN) – A fatal crash happened this morning near Bondurant. The crash involved a large truck and a car. One person has been confirmed dead.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An investigation in underway in Des Moines after an overnight officer-involved shooting. KCCI-TV reports a woman was injured in the shooting and transported to a local hospital. Information on her name and condition has not been released. No officers were injured in the incident.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A woman has been arrested and charged with child stealing and child endangerment after police say she stole her boyfriend’s 6-year-old child and took the child into the woods. KCRG-TV reports 25-year-old Amy Green of Iowa City isn’t the mother and had no custody, permission or authorization to take the child. Green has a history of illegal substance abuse and mental health issues.

SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – A man lost his hand in a fireworks mishap in northwestern Iowa yesterday. The Sioux City Journal reports the man was taken to a local hospital. On Saturday, a four-week-old baby and her mother in eastern Iowa suffered burns and serious injuries when fireworks exploded on them during an illegal show. Iowa recently lifted a decades-long ban on fireworks sales.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – One person was shot in Davenport Monday, according to KCRG-TV. Police say the victim is being treated for injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. Investigators say they are checking surveillance cameras nearby. No arrests have been made.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – An Ankeny teacher is doing her best to keep kids reading over the summer. WHO-TV reports Joy DeJong, a 5th grade teacher at Southeast Elementary, started collecting books a year ago and putting them in the trunk of her car so she could bring a makeshift library on wheels directly to the kids. She says, “not all kids are able to get to the library, so what better way to get books in kids’ hands than to take the books to the children?”
