CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A 22-year-old man is dead after a house fire in Cedar Rapids. KWWL-TV reports Naquave Whitlock was taken to the hospital after the fire, where he died. Fire crews found him in an upstairs bedroom. A 20-year-old woman, Alize Watson, was able to escape the fire. It started in the kitchen when a frying pan with grease was left on the stove top.

FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Numerous gunshots were fired near a skate park in Fort Dodge Monday according to KCCI-TV. When officers arrived in the area, they found an SUV parked in the parking lot behind some apartments that had been damaged by gunfire. The SUV was occupied by numerous people at the time of the shooting, but only minor injuries were reported.

DAVIS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A lawsuit against the Davis County School District may end up in the Supreme Court, according to KTVO-TV. The court is considering taking up the case filed by the parents of a Davis County student who had a sexual relationship with two staff members. The suit alleges the district didn’t do enough to protect the student. Both the District Court and the Iowa Court of Appeals have previously found the district wasn’t liable for damages.

URBANDALE, IA (IRN) – The search for two fugitives out of Warren County ended with arrests following a three-vehicle crash causing several injuries Monday night in Urbandale. WHO-TV reports authorities including an FBI Task Force were searching for 26-year-old Scott Grimes and his girlfriend, 19-year-old Kayla Schultz. Grimes had escaped from the Warren County Jail and police say he picked up Schultz, who was also wanted, in the process. Both were arrested at the scene.

ORANGE CITY, IA (IRN) – The former city clerk of Boyden in northwest Iowa has been placed on probation after pleading guilty to stealing money from the city. The Sioux City Journal reports former city clerk Beth Sipma was arrested after a state audit showed she spent more than $36,000 improperly. Boyden is home to about 700 people.

AMES, IA (IRN) – Iowa State University officials report that they expect fall enrollment could exceed 36,500 students. That number would be the eighth year of record enrollment and tenth consecutive year of growth. More than 12,000 students are living in university-owned or managed housing.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Occupants of a home are safe after two dogs alerted them about a fire. KGAN-TV reports a Cedar Rapids man says his two dogs woke him up by barking, and that the smoke detectors in the house didn’t go off. No one was hurt in the fire.
