LAWLER, IA (IRN) – A driver from the Chickasaw County town of Sumner was killed Wednesday in a flooding incident. KWWL-TV reports 77-year-old Albert Gott was killed after his vehicle was swept away by fast-moving water across in Chickasaw County. The water swept his vehicle into the ditch, and he was able to escape to the roof of his vehicle and call 911. But by the time rescuers got to the scene he was gone, and his body was discovered a short time later.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Polk County medical examiner says one punch to the face didn’t kill a 32-year-old Des Moines man. The Des Moines Register reports Ryan Thompson was talking to his fiancee outside their home in July when a man who was driving by stopped, got out and then punched Thompson. He died the next day. An autopsy found that Thompson had large amounts of methamphetamine in his system when he died from a stroke, not the punch.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A car hit a student by Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids this morning. KCRG-TV reports the student involved is a high school girl who was not in the crosswalk at the time of the incident. This crash comes amid months of extensive road work near the school.

HAMBURG, IA (IRN) – The body of a man who was swept beneath a Missouri River barge near Hamburg, Iowa, has been recovered from the river just south of the state border in Missouri. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports the body of 42-year-old Jason Grayson of Elliot was recovered Wednesday downstream from Hamburg.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Dubuque police are investigating a stabbing that resulted in lockdowns at two Dubuque schools. KDTH Radio reports police responded to a call at a home near the schools Wednesday. Police say a man suffered a non-life-threatening stab wound. A robbery had also been reported in the area, so the schools were put on lockdown as a precaution.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – A black teenager who was shown on video getting thrown down by a white police officer in Waterloo received thousands of dollars to keep quiet about a settlement he received. After resolving his federal lawsuit for $95,000, the city of Waterloo negotiated an extra $5,000 payment to the teen in exchange for guarantees that he and his attorney would not have press conferences, make disclosures to civil rights groups or mention the deal on social media. State officials say the deal is likely illegal.

WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Some pet owners who live in a West Des Moines duplex complex haven’t been picking up their dog’s poop, and the landlord is now demanding DNA tests for the dogs. WHO-TV reports the dogs were swabbed for DNA, and the DNA will be matched with any dog poop found on the grounds in the future. The first two offences will result in a fine, the third–eviction.
