NEW YORK, NY (IRN) – 5,300 Wells Fargo employees have been fired for creating millions of phony accounts. On Thursday, federal regulators said Wells Fargo employees secretly created millions of unauthorized bank and credit card accounts — without their customers knowing it — since 2011. The phony accounts earned the bank unwarranted fees from customers and allowed employees to boost their sales figures and make more money. The firings constitute approximately 1% of their workforce.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating a drive-by shooting that happened late Wednesday night at a Dollar Mart. KCCI-TV reports bullets chipped the paint and bricks on the side of the building, and no one was injured. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A former substitute teacher accused of sexually exploiting a Cedar Rapids Washington High student has pled not guilty. KGAN-TV reports 24-year-old Mary Beth Haglin previously admitted to the relationship. Two school administrators resigned as a result of the scandal.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman inside of a Jimmy John’s bathroom in Iowa City. KCRG-TV reports 20-year-old Grant Ajango walked into the women’s bathroom and locked the door, ignoring the woman’s request to leave. He then slammed her against the wall and assaulted her. She was able to reach her phone to text “help” to her friends. Her friends and Jimmy John’s employees forced the door open, and were able to rescue her and detain Ajango.

MONROE/LUCAS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A plane crashed yesterday afternoon in Lucas County, according to KTVO-TV. The pilot died in the crash. No additional information has been released.

OSCEOLA, IA (IRN) – A school bus rolled onto its side in a deep ditch in rural Clarke County yesterday, injuring seven students. KCCI-TV reports there were no serious injuries, but multiple students were taken to a hospital to be checked out. Authorities say the driver lost control on a curve and believe weather potentially played a role in the crash.

AMES, IA (IRN) – An Ames family was able to escape their burning home safely Tuesday, but one pet is on the mend. WOI-TV reports Cleo the cat nearly lost her life in the fire. The cat stopped breathing, so Ames firefighters worked on her for about 30 minutes. Using a special pet revival oxygen mask, they were able to bring her back to life. She’s in a pet hospital for now, but the family says their beloved pet should be able to come home later this week.
