CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids went under lockdown this morning. KWWL-TV reports a 15-year-old male was found with life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds behind the auditorium. Officers say they do not believe that anyone other than the victim was involved, but they are continuing to investigate.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A victim was taken to the hospital Thursday evening in Des Moines after being shot in the mouth. KCCI-TV reports witnesses say the victim came running down the street before going to a house and knocking on the door for help. The victim is in serious condition, and no suspects have been identified.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Five people are in the hospital, and two of them in serious condition after a three-car crash on the southside of Des Moines. WOI-TV reports 18-year-old Fernando Lopez Aguilar was arrested for three counts of reckless driving and for not having his license or insurance. Officers say speed and not obeying a stop sign led to the crash.

OSCEOLA, IA (IRN) – The bus driver involved in the wreck of a school bus in rural Clarke County will pay a $195 fine for failure to maintain control of the vehicle. 72-year-old Darwin Griffith, of Osceola, is credited with leading all seven Clarke County school children out of the rear of the bus to safety. Troopers say speed wasn’t a factor, but poor road conditions due to heavy rains played a role.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Three Iowa men face charges after state conservation officers say they unlawfully harvested ginseng root from state property. Kyle Jones and Brent Jones, both of Slater, and Bart Bollie of Madrid, were charged Tuesday with fifth-degree theft, unlawful possession of wild ginseng root from state land and unlawful possession of young wild ginseng. Ginseng is endangered in some states.

RIVERSIDE, IA (IRN) – The U.S. Post Office’s new Star Trek Forever stamps will be dedicated Saturday in Riverside, the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. KCII-radio reports the stamps feature iconic Star Trek silhouettes against bright-colored backgrounds, and will be available for purchase.
