DAKOTA CITY, IA (IRN) – The man shot and killed by a Department of Natural Resources officer in Dakota City Saturday has been identified. 20-year-old Shane Allen Jensen of Humboldt was fatally shot Saturday afternoon after firing a 9mm handgun into the air and then pointing it at officers. Jensen’s family said he expressed thoughts of “suicide by cop” to them before stealing a vehicle.

ALGONA, IA (IRN) – A state board has suspended the teaching license of a northern Iowa teacher and coach who was accused of being intoxicated at school. The Globe Gazette reports that the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners ordered the suspension of 46-year-old Chad Ahlers’ teaching and coaching licenses for two years. Ahlers was a math teacher and track and cross country coach at Algona High School. He says he has struggled with depression and alcohol use and apologized to his friends, family and former co-workers.

WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Today marks 75 years since the five Sullivan brothers were killed in World War II; they died on November 13, 1942. The brothers were sailors serving in the U.S. Navy. They volunteered with the stipulation they all serve together. They died serving on the USS Juneau when it was sunk by Japanese torpedoes.

RUNNELLS, IA (IRN) – A Runnells man is recovering at a Des Moines hospital after being ejected from his car during an annual fundraising race for first responders this weekend. KCCI-TV reports 35-year-old Jarod Smith was injured after his car rolled during the race. DeJoode’s annual 69er Farm Race raises money for the Camp Township Fire Department based in Runnells.

KELLOGG, IA (IRN) – A Kellogg man is searching for answers after his dog was shot with an arrow on his property Saturday afternoon. WHO-TV reports Andrew Worrell lives in the country outside of Kellogg and owns four collies, including one named Scooby. Worrell found Scooby under his deck with an arrow going through his torso. The dog was taken to the vet to have emergency surgery, where part of his stomach and half a lung were removed.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – People with green thumbs gathered in Cedar Rapids Saturday to help beautify a neighborhood. KGAN-TV reports volunteers planted more than 50 trees. The planting was done through the Branching Out program by Trees Forever and Alliant Energy.
The trees planted on Saturday were ones to replace ashes lost to the Emerald Ash Borer.
