DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa officials have reported the state’s first confirmed human case of West Nile virus. The Iowa Public Health Department said Friday the man lives in Audubon County, is 61 to 80 years old and has recovered. State records say 104 Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile virus last year and nine died.

DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A guidance counselor described her struggle to take a gun from a 12-year-old eastern Iowa student in the first day of the boy’s trial for attempted murder. The Quad-City Times reports the guidance counselor described the “intense struggle” last August when she and a teacher tried to grab the loaded gun from the boy. The boy allegedly pointed the .22-caliber gun at her and pulled the trigger but it didn’t fire because the safety was on.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City police have identified the man arrested Thursday following an overnight standoff. KCRG-TV reports James Stephon Joy, 34, allegedly pulled a gun on a man who asked him to leave a home and told the man he was going to shoot him. He then pointed the gun at a woman before they ran and called the police. Joy then barricaded himself inside the home with the standoff lasting around ten hours. Police found the gun was a BB gun.

FORT MADISON, IA (IRN) – Three corrections officers at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison were assaulted by inmates on Thursday. The officers were trying to stop a group of inmates from stabbing another inmate when they were injured. None of the injuries were serious.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An ammonia leak at Iowa Cold Storage in Altoona caused several businesses to evacuate Thursday night. KCCI-TV reports a number of first responders and a hazmat crew responded, evacuating several businesses in the area. All the employees were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.
