DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two teenagers who have been accused of murder wanted to rob the man selling them marijuana in Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports police say Adam Ismail and Gregory Hampton, Jr. met with Rashid Ibrahim for a drug deal on October 10th. The three got into some kind of dispute that ended with the two suspects robbing and killing Ibrahim.

MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – A Muscatine man is facing a murder charge, accused of shooting a woman at a recreation area in eastern Iowa. KGAN-TV reports 23-year-old David Hatfield fatally shot his girlfriend, 18-year-old Kaitlyn Palmer, on Wednesday. Hatfield initially told investigators Palmer shot herself in the head. He later acknowledged that he’d shot her.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Most inmates in Iowa prisons have a mental illness. KCCI-TV reports across all nine Iowa correctional facilities, 63% of individuals incarcerated have a mental illness. In the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women, it’s 80%. Some of the most common diagnoses are bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – State auditor Rob Sand released his findings on reported financial irregularities at the Wapsie Valley Community School District on Monday, identifying thousands of dollars unaccounted for by the district. Sand found discrepancies in how Wapsie Valley handled funds from concession and ticket sales. He estimated that the district collected $13,700 less than what would be expected from concession sales.

IOWA (IRN) – Two Iowa state representatives, Republican Joe Mitchell of Mt. Pleasant and Democrat Ras Smith of Waterloo, plan to introduce a new bill once the legislative session begins in January that would allow college student-athletes to hire agents and be paid for endorsements. The NCAA is against the measure, which is already law in California. The California law goes into effect in 2023.
