DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One person has been seriously injured in a crash involving about 30 vehicles on Interstate Highway 80 near Altoona today, according to WHO-TV. The wreck happened around 11 a.m. east of the east mixmaster and just before U.S. Highway 65. A snow squall blowing through the metro caused slippery roads across central Iowa and law enforcement agencies are responding to dozens of crashes.

RIVERDALE, IA (IRN) – An eastern Iowa man has been charged with first-degree murder for a shooting that killed his nephew. The Quad-City Times reports that 51-year-old Brian Francisco Duque, of Riverdale, is being held without bond at Scott County Jail. Authorities were called to a house shortly before 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Sheriff’s deputies attempted to revive 32-year-old Terry Warner, but he had already died from his wounds. Duque was arguing with Warner, who also lived at the house. Duque allegedly grabbed a 9-millimeter handgun from his bedroom and shot Warner once.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man was arrested in a Des Moines home Saturday night for the U.S. military. KCCI-TV reports the Des Moines police received a tip that Jakeb Lacey, 21, was in the home. Lacey was booked on suspicion of military desertion and has no bail for a felony warrant.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Former congressman Berkley Bedell has died. The former Iowa representative suffered a stroke in Naples, Florida. He was 98 years old. Bedell is remembered for his leadership in politics and business, say presidential candidates, family and friends of the late congressman. Bedell was born in Spirit Lake in 1921, attended Iowa State University and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. In 1975, Bedell was elected as a Democrat to Iowa’s 6th District. He served in the House until 1987.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Former University of Iowa athletic director Bump Elliott has died. Elliott was a star halfback for Michigan, winning the Big Ten’s MVP award in 1947. Elliott became Michigan’s coach in 1959 and led the Wolverines for 10 seasons, a tenure that included a Rose Bowl win in 1964. Elliott was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. He was 94.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hawkeye and Cyclone fans will be purchasing flights for the bowl games announced Sunday. Iowa is headed to San Diego to play the University of Southern California on Dec. 27 at the Holiday Bowl. Iowa State is going to Orlando, Florida, to play in the Camping World Bowl against Notre Dame on Dec. 28.
