BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – Schools in Burlington will be closed Tuesday to allow staff and students to attend the funeral of an elementary school principal who died last week in a car crash. The Hawk Eye newspaper reports Chris Richards, principal at Black Hawk Elementary, was killed Thursday morning when he attempted to turn from U.S. Highway 61 onto another road and crashed with a pickup truck. The funeral will be held at the Burlington High School gymnasium.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Nebraska man who thought he was meeting a 15-year-old girl at an Iowa motel for sex has been sentenced to three years in prison. The Des Moines Register reports 40-year-old John Daniel Nielsen of Omaha was swept up in a law enforcement operation targeting sex-trafficking after exchanging text messages with an undercover officer posing as the teen. Nielsen arranged a meeting at a Council Bluffs motel and agreed to pay for the sex. He was arrested when he arrived at the motel room.

LANCASTER, MO (IRN) – A football coach at a southeast Iowa high school and his girlfriend are facing felony charges in the bloody assault of a northeast Missouri woman in Lancaster, Missouri. KTVO-TV reports the suspects are Dalton McCarty, 26, of Wayland, Missouri, and his girlfriend, Khristian Hill, 26, of Kirksville. McCarty is employed by Keokuk High School where he works as an associate and serves as the assistant varsity football coach.

MANLY, IA (IRN) – A Union Pacific train derailed in Manly Sunday night. KIMT-TV reports several grain cars derailed at an intersection. No injuries were reported.

LAKE CHARLES, LA (IRN) – A Des Moines boxer is one step closer to achieving his Olympic dream. WHO-TV reports former Des Moines Lincoln Railsplitter Antonio Mireles won the super heavyweight boxing division at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Sunday. The victory advances Mireles to the next stage of the selection process to represent Team USA in the 2020 Olympics.
