DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Department of Public Health data continues to show an increase in positive coronavirus cases in the state. On Saturday, IDPH reported 567 new positive cases and 1 additional death. That brings the statewide total to 30,922 cases and 731 deaths.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A former Cedar Rapids Jefferson softball star was arrested and charged, along with a retired homicide detective, with murder in connection with a 1999 killing of a Jacksonville Florida man. KCRG-TV reports Melissa Schafer, 50, was arrested in Jefferson City, Missouri Thursday. Her ex-husband, William Baer, who is a former homicide detective in Jacksonville was arrested the same day in Florida. DNA evidence linked the two to the murder of Saad Kawaf, who owned a convenience store. Kawaf was stabbed and killed when a man and woman attacked him in his driveway and then tied up his wife in their home, stealing about $30,000. Police now say Baer and Shafer were those attackers.

CHICAGO, IL (IRN) – An Iowa Central Community College student-athlete was killed in a Chicago shooting. The victim, Jacquice Baylock, was a sophomore and a member of the Triton football team. Baylock, 18, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and later died.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A private helicopter crashed near the Des Moines Airport Friday night. One person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
