DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – MidAmerican Energy says customers will likely see higher monthly heating bills this winter, attributing the rise to continued high natural gas prices. Impacts will depend on usage, but residential customers can expect their total bill to increase by 46-96 percent.

UNION, IA (IRN) – Law enforcement officials in Hardin County are continuing an investigation into a death that they said was a homicide. Osborn Eugene Gavel, 22, of Baxter, Ark., was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Deputies found Steve Reece, 74, inside a bedroom in a residence. Officials believe that Reece died as a result of being struck by Gavel. Gavel and others had been staying with Reece the night before his body was found.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Muscatine man was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder for the stabbing death of another man during a party in rural Iowa. Milton Serrano Jr., 22, was originally charged with first-degree murder in the 2020 death of 19-year-old Chantz Stevens, of Wilton. Serrano stabbed Stevens after Serrano was asked to leave a party in Clarence, Iowa. Stevens died at the scene.

LAKE CITY, IA (IRN) – A student from South Central Calhoun High School in Lake City was killed in a crash Tuesday. Kaylin Blessington, a junior, was killed in a crash near Auburn on the way to school.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission announced that sports wagering in September was the highest recorded in the state, a little over $210 million. The upcoming months of October and November could be even bigger for sports wagers in the state.
