ALLAMAKEE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Iowa state Trooper Ted Benda was assisting the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office when he was involved in a single vehicle crash on Highway 51 approximately 6 miles north of Postville. He was airlifted to Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he remains in critical condition. The accident is under investigation.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One teacher in the Des Moines Public School District has been fired for refusing to wear a mask. The district did not identify the teacher or where they worked. The mask mandate started last month.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids police say a teen admitted to stabbing and killing his parents at their home early Thursday morning. 17-year-old Ethan Alexander Orton stabbed his parents, Misty Scott-Slade and Casey Orton at about 2:10 a.m. When police arrived, they found Ethan sitting outside the home, covered in blood. He admitted to killing his parents by stabbing them and using an axe to kill his mother when she appeared to have survived the initial stabbing. The teen said he did it to “take charge of his life.” He has been arrested and faces two counts of first-degree murder.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – The Ottumwa Police Department said an 81-year-old woman reported missing Tuesday night has been found dead. 81-year-old Connie Turner didn’t come home after going on a walk. She was found near the edge of a lagoon in a densely wooded area. Turner suffered from dementia, and police don’t suspect foul play.

SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – A retired admiral for the U.S. Navy and Sioux City resident has announced his intention to run as a Democrat to unseat Sen. Chuck Grassley. Mike Franken says leadership has been replaced with blatant party politics, and that Republican politicians have moved too far to the right.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – With three more home football games to go and Kinnick Stadium facing severe staffing shortages, the University of Iowa has sent out a call for “game day volunteers” willing to work at stadium gates, in sections for disabled spectators and in premium club areas beginning Saturday, when Iowa takes on Purdue. They’re short about 200 workers.
