DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man was injured in a shooting at a Des Moines gas station overnight. It happened late Thursday night at a Git N Go. Police said the suspect displayed a handgun while robbing the store. A friend of the cashier tried to intervene and was shot. Police said his injuries are not life-threatening. The robber didn’t get away with any cash because the cashier had an empty drawer. OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – An Ottumwa murder suspect is opting to leave his fate in the hands of a judge. The first-degree murder case against Preston Martin, 41, proceeded with a bench trial Wednesday morning. Martin is charged in the May 2019 death of Thomas Carlton Foster, 41, also of Ottumwa. Martin was previously declared incompetent to stand trial. The court found he suffers from a variety of mental health issues, including schizophrenia. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A Davenport elementary school was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday following a shooting in the area. Shortly before 1pm, Davenport police responded to a call of shots fired and found a 17-year-old boy suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. The investigation indicates an argument broke out between several people and escalated into shots being fired. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man who conspired to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and other synthetic opioids was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison on Thursday. 39-year-old Ryan Schlitter admitted that he obtained distribution quantities of heroin through a group of heroin dealers based out of Cedar Rapids. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The groundbreaking for the new Des Moines Buccaneers arena took place Wednesday afternoon at the Merle Hay Mall. Construction on the old Younkers building has begun to turn the space into the new Buccaneers Arena. The arena will be multi-use and seats 3,500 people. The arena will not only house the Buccaneers, but also allow space for youth hockey, other sporting events, and concerts.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines school district will offer free meals to all students again next year, even though a COVID-19 relief program has ended. Free breakfast and lunch will now be paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision program. It covers districts with higher numbers of students from low-income families. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – A 4-year-old girl died of injuries from a gunshot wound to the face in Ankeny on Monday. Police identified the girl as Savannah Holmes.The girl’s father told police that he put his two children in their highchairs to feed them. He said that he saw two men approach the front door and heard them pounding on it. The father feared a confrontation, so he grabbed his pistol and went to the front door. The father told police he put the gun down near a couch and spoke to the men, one of whom said he had left his phone in the home. While he was outside, Savannah got out of her highchair, found the gun, and shot herself. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids police say a standoff Tuesday night lasted from 7p.m. to nearly midnight. The standoff ended when a person was found dead in the residence. No additional information has been released. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Kennedy High School student is asking the Cedar Rapids Community School District to make competitive video gaming a school-sponsored team sport. Ethan McCord went to the May 9 School Board meeting and argued for the value of e-sports. He told the board colleges are starting to award scholarships to outstanding players. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – The DNR is encouraging Dubuque residents to secure garbage, and to remove pet food and bird feeders from their yards to avoid attracting a wandering black bear. They say if you encounter the bear, don’t run. Slowly back away and make noises.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A student-led effort is being credited with renaming Andrew Jackson Elementary School in Des Moines. A few students from the school presented to the school board last month. They said President Andrew Jackson shouldn’t be honored because of his record on race. Instead, the school will be renamed after Mary Jackson. She was the first Black woman to work as an engineer for NASA. The name change is effective immediately. The school district will replace the sign. BAXTER, IA (IRN) – A child died on Tuesday after being run over by a vehicle in the town of Baxter in Marshall County. The driver of a 2011 GMC Sierra was traveling in reverse from their garage when they hit a child on a tricycle that was behind the vehicle. The driver reportedly looked but didn’t see the child and ran over them with a tire. The child died at the scene. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines Police are investigating a shooting on the east side of the city that has injured three teenagers. The victims were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. CENTERVILLE, IA (IRN) – The multi-day search for David Boley ended on Tuesday after the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at the Centerville residence of his wife. Boley allegedly hit an officer in the head Saturday, sending that deputy to the hospital. Police said Boley has been on a crime spree since Thursday. He faces a dozen charges including assault and sex abuse. PRAIRIE CITY, IA (IRN) – Governor Kim Reynolds signed into law Tuesday a plan that will require that in 2023 new fuel retailers will have to provide E-15 and existing retailers will have to offer that blend by 2026. Smaller retailers, and those with older facilities and those that would face high costs from offering E-15 can apply for a waiver.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The man accused of shooting and killing a man on Friday night in Cedar Rapids told police he shot at the man twice after the man threw punches at him. James Siegel, 42, told investigators he had shot Ty Casey, 39, in the chest after Casey threw a glancing punch at him. Casey then threw another punch at Siegel, but missed. That’s when Siegel told investigators he fired a second shot at point-blank range. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Police in Ankeny are investigating a Monday shooting that has resulted in the death of a 4-year-old girl. The child was taken to a hospital, where she died due to her injuries. WEBSTER CITY, IA (IRN) – After a short deliberation, the jury has delivered a verdict in the trial of a man charged with shooting and killing an Iowa State Trooper. Michael Lang was charged in the murder of Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Jim Smith in April 2021. On Monday, the jury found Lang guilty on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assaulting a police officer. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police are investigating after a man was stabbed in the stomach Sunday night in Des Moines’ Pioneer Park neighborhood. He is expected to survive. No arrests have been made. DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – With a vote of 7-0, the Dubuque City Council put one million dollars in funds from the American Rescue Funds Act towards the creation of a new permanent three thousand seat stadium at the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville. The city says it will make that money back in less than two years through an increase in hotel stays in Dubuque.

CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – A 15-year-old Cedar Falls boy faces charges after allegedly stealing a car and leading police on a brief chase Sunday afternoon. An officer spotted the stolen vehicle, and police say the driver immediately sped away, trying to escape. A brief chase ended, and the suspect tried to run away. A search helped bring the teen into custody. The 15-year-old now faces two felonies and three misdemeanors: IOWA (IRN) – Reports of child abuse are on the rise in Iowa and the pandemic played a major role. The Iowa Department of Human Services says 2021 saw an increase of more than 5,000 reports. The increase began when children were sent home from schools, and were no longer around mandatory reporters. There was also more isolation and more parents experiencing sickness, joblessness and higher levels of stress. APPANOOSE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Authorities are searching for a man considered armed and dangerous in rural Appanoose County after a deputy was assaulted on Saturday. A deputy was responding to a report of a suspicious person in Moravia, when the suspect, 33-year-old David Duane Boley, assaulted him. Boley, who was armed, ran away after the incident. Boley is wanted on warrants for sexual abuse, drug distribution to a minor and child endangerment. CENTRAL CITY, IA (IRN) – An unidentified female died on Saturday afternoon in an incident while tubing on the Wapsipinicon River northwest of Central City. The person who made the 911 report said that she had seen her friend’s tube floating by without her with it. First responders located her body later that afternoon. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Hundreds of people showed up at the Iowa Greyhound Park in Dubuque on Sunday for the last-ever chance to bet on the dogs. The park is closing because it is no longer financially feasible to keep it open. According to Brian Carpenter, the general manager of IGP, Florida had been a hotspot for dog racing, but a ban there in 2020 led to fewer people breeding dogs. The shortage of dogs contributed to the diminishment of racing parks.
