DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Brazil has reinstated a tariff on ethanol, and Senators want a quick response. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is leading a bipartisan group of legislators urging trade representatives to respond to the 20 percent tariff on all imports after the first 158 million gallons sold. In 2016, the U.S. exported 264 million gallons to Brazil, which is set to increase this year. Ethanol producers call the tariff a trade barrier threatening 750 million dollars in U.S. exports. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says she supports the latest Republican effort in Congress to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Reynolds says the bill gives Iowa flexibility and “empowers consumers.” Many health care advocacy groups oppose the measure, warning that millions would lose coverage and others would face skimpier insurance policies and higher premiums for pregnancy and pre-existing conditions. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Missouri state trooper was sentenced Tuesday in connection with the death of Brandon Ellingson of Clive. KCCI-TV reports Anthony Piercy was sentenced to ten days in jail, probation and community service. Ellingson died in Piercy’s custody in 2014 after Piercy arrested him on suspicion of drunk boating. Piercy did not properly secure Ellingson’s life vest, and he drowned after Piercy put him in handcuffs. Ellingson’s father called the verdict a joke. CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Falls Police are investigating the death of a teenage boy, according to KWWL-TV. Police Chief Jeff Olson says a 17-year-old killed himself this week and they are investigating whether bullying played a factor in his death. Posts from multiple people on the boy’s Facebook page tell him he’s a loser and should go kill himself. Olson says they are working with the County Attorney to see if there is a criminal case. CLAY COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A statewide Amber Alert Tuesday for three girls missing out of Clay County has been cancelled. Danica Arzaga returned the girls to a family member before fleeing. Police are now searching for Arzaga. She’s 5’3″ inches tall with black hair and brown eyes, with a large eagle tattoo on her chest. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – Teachers at a middle school in Ankeny have grown tired of watching students go hungry at lunch because they have negative account balances, according to the Des Moines Register. To help, teachers are pitching in money to help feed the kids. One 8th grade teacher says, “we know it’s going to help them through their day and be a more productive student, rather than think about how hungry they are.”

VINTON, IA (IRN) – A garbage truck driver was killed in a crash this morning near Vinton, according to KWWL-TV. Two people were thrown out of the garbage truck when it collided with another vehicle. There is no word on other injuries. LOCKRIDGE, IA (IRN) – A Lockridge man could spend 25 years in jail for stealing less than $1,000 from a local retailer, according to WQAD-TV. 25-year-old Tyler James Watson committed ten thefts–all misdemeanors–from the Fairfield Walmart. Collectively, the thefts constitute Ongoing Criminal Conduct, a Class B felony. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Iowa City police are looking for the driver of a semi-truck that hit a 13-year-old girl Monday and left the scene. KGAN-TV reports the girl reportedly stepped into the crosswalk at an intersection just moments before the truck ran a red light, running over her foot and spinning her around. The driver left, and the teen was able to walk out of the intersection with minor injuries. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Someone carved a swastika into an elevator at Drake University Saturday evening, according to KCCI-TV. Offensive racial slurs were also written on a white board outside a student’s room. All have been removed and campus police are investigating. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The West Des Moines City Council has banned the use of fireworks in the city, according to WHO-TV. After allowing fireworks for six hours on the Fourth of July, the city received many complaints, resulting in the ban. The city of Des Moines is also considering a ban. NORTH LIBERTY, IA (IRN) – A North Liberty woman is facing a child endangerment charge after allegedly choking a 12-year-old boy. KCRG-TV reports the boy told officers he got into an argument with 41-year-old Christina Dochterman and she choked him, making it difficult to breathe. When police arrived, Dochterman smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech. When officers asked her how much she had to drink, she replied “not enough.” She was arrested.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The search for a man police believe shot another man to death in the street in Fort Dodge is over. KCCI-TV reports 27-year-old Levi Gibbs III was wanted for the September 3 murder of 32-year-old Shane Wessels. Des Moines police said officers received tips on his location and with assistance from Polk County deputies, were able to apprehend Gibbs early this morning. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – Omaha and Council Bluffs rescue crews pulled a 30-year-old man from the Missouri River this morning. Someone from a condo along the river spotted the man clinging to a log floating in the river and called 9-1-1. The man was hospitalized with possible life-threatening injuries. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – An Iowa City man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sex with an incapacitated woman and recording the acts. The Quad City Times reports 26-year-old Nathan Schloss sexually abused the woman in 2013. Officers discovered the videos after Schloss turned in a computer to show them a video of his former roommate torturing a cat. The roommate received probation. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An Iowa Senate staff member at the center of a sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuit has resigned. KCCI-TV reports Jim Friedrich, an analyst to Senate Republicans, is stepping down two months after he was named in a gender discrimination lawsuit. A judge awarded a former female staffer $2.2 million. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – There is a sexual assault testing backlog at the state crime lab. The Des Moines Register reports that 405 sexual assault cases were waiting for DNA testing at the end of August. That’s way up from previous years. The delays mean that victims of sexual assault may have to wait months for testing before an arrest can be made. State budget troubles are to blame. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A photo circulating the internet of President Trump wading through floodwaters in Texas to save two cats is fake. KWWL-TV reports while the President did go to Texas after Hurricane Harvey, the real picture of the cat rescue was taken by a Des Moines Register photographer during the 2008 flood in Cedar Rapids. President Trump’s head was Photoshopped onto the Cedar Rapids man’s body who rescued the cats nearly ten years ago.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man died from gunshot wounds in Cedar Rapids, according to KCRG-TV. Cedar Rapids police responded to a report of shots fired yesterday, and found two victims. Police have no suspects in custody. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids Police are looking for a man they say robbed a local bank. KWWL-TV reports a man dressed in a red ball baseball cap gave a teller at the Collins Community Credit Union a note saying he had a gun, and demanded money. CLIVE, IA (IRN) – Police in the Des Moines metro are warning women to be careful about where they leave their purses after a Florida woman was caught on camera cashing fraudulent checks. KCCI-TV reports thieves are waiting in parking lots for women to go into stores, then nab their purses while they’re shopping. AMES, IA (IRN) – Iowa native and Dallas Mavericks forward Harrison Barnes returned to his hometown of Ames Saturday to pay it forward. WHO-TV reports Barnes, along with his wife Brittany, presented a $300,000 donation check to fund the construction of the Miracle Playground and Field in Ames.

TIFFIN, IA (IRN) – A Tiffin man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly drove with a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit while his child was in the front seat. KGAN-TV reports 36-year-old Craig Vorba was driving all over the roadway on I-380 when he was pulled over.As he slowed to stop, an officer observed Vorba’s three-year-old child climbing into the back seat. Police say Vorba smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and had unsteady balance. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man accused of robbing and kidnapping a man at gunpoint earlier this month in Des Moines has been arrested in connection with a robbery in Johnston. KCCI-TV reports police arrested 17-year-old James Henderson on Thursday, and his mother was arrested Friday for allegedly helping her son hide from authorities. Henderson and others robbed the victim at gunpoint and forced him into his truck, making him withdraw money at an ATM, and then buy alcohol at a liquor store. The victim escaped, and the police are looking for other suspects. CLIVE, IA (IRN) – A woman wanted in a theft investigation in Clive has been found in Minnesota, according to WHO-TV. Last month, authorities asked for help finding a woman they say was using credit cards stolen from a parked car. This week, Melonie Mahfouz was arrested in Minnesota on other warrants. Clive police say she is a member of the “felony lane gang.” Mahfouz is facing charges in South Carolina, as well. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A 45-year-old man was taken to the hospital after his plane crashed into the Mississippi River near Dubuque Thursday. WQAD-TV reports first responders found the plane upside down in shallow water. The pilot was not seriously hurt. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids is working with different groups to make alleys in the city useable and more interesting. KCRG-TV reports the city unveiled a renovated alley Friday. The pop-up alley upgrade features wall murals, seating areas, games, moveable landscaping, and more. The city manager says it’s a trend in cities across the country.
