CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A man is dead after being hit by a car in Cedar Rapids Friday night, according to KWWL-TV. A 71-year-old man was attempting to cross a street when he was struck by a 2002 Kia Sportage. He was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by the car, and his identity has not been released. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 26-year-old Britney Marx of Marion. She was not injured, and no charges have been filed. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A southern Iowa man has been sentenced to 120 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to producing child pornography involving girls younger than 10 years old. 31-year-old Timothy Ryan Zollman, of Van Wert sexually assaulted 10 girls and recorded the assaults. The U.S. Attorney’s office called Zollman “a dangerous predator.” WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Wolf Construction in West Des Moines confirmed Friday that its owner and founder died in a plane crash Wednesday while returning from Kansas City. KCCI-TV reports forty-two-year-old Scott Wolfswinkel, of West Des Moines, died when his Piper Malibu crashed in Lucas County as he was coming back to Des Moines after a business meeting in Kansas City. He was the only one on board. CUSTER, S.D. (IRN) – A Davenport man and Patriot Guard Rider died in a motorcycle accident near Custer, South Dakota. WQAD-TV reports two motorcycles that were traveling together failed to negotiate a curve and went in the ditch. Seventy-two-year-old Douglas Boemecke died at the scene. The other motorcycle was driven by his son, 52-year-old Timothy Boemecke of Fallon, Illinois. Timothy was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One Des Moines girl is hoping to help the homeless by spreading some blessings. WHO-TV reports Niasha Wills is a 12-year-old girl who wants to help the homeless. Wills got the idea for “Blessings Bags” from Pinterest. They’re simply Ziploc bags full of essentials – like first-aid kits, lotion, chapstick, and toiletries – as well as some things meant to just brighten a person’s day, like cookies, juice, and a personalized card. She hopes to add toys for children around Christmas time.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids went under lockdown this morning. KWWL-TV reports a 15-year-old male was found with life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds behind the auditorium. Officers say they do not believe that anyone other than the victim was involved, but they are continuing to investigate. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A victim was taken to the hospital Thursday evening in Des Moines after being shot in the mouth. KCCI-TV reports witnesses say the victim came running down the street before going to a house and knocking on the door for help. The victim is in serious condition, and no suspects have been identified. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Five people are in the hospital, and two of them in serious condition after a three-car crash on the southside of Des Moines. WOI-TV reports 18-year-old Fernando Lopez Aguilar was arrested for three counts of reckless driving and for not having his license or insurance. Officers say speed and not obeying a stop sign led to the crash. OSCEOLA, IA (IRN) – The bus driver involved in the wreck of a school bus in rural Clarke County will pay a $195 fine for failure to maintain control of the vehicle. 72-year-old Darwin Griffith, of Osceola, is credited with leading all seven Clarke County school children out of the rear of the bus to safety. Troopers say speed wasn’t a factor, but poor road conditions due to heavy rains played a role. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Three Iowa men face charges after state conservation officers say they unlawfully harvested ginseng root from state property. Kyle Jones and Brent Jones, both of Slater, and Bart Bollie of Madrid, were charged Tuesday with fifth-degree theft, unlawful possession of wild ginseng root from state land and unlawful possession of young wild ginseng. Ginseng is endangered in some states. RIVERSIDE, IA (IRN) – The U.S. Post Office’s new Star Trek Forever stamps will be dedicated Saturday in Riverside, the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. KCII-radio reports the stamps feature iconic Star Trek silhouettes against bright-colored backgrounds, and will be available for purchase.

NEW YORK, NY (IRN) – 5,300 Wells Fargo employees have been fired for creating millions of phony accounts. On Thursday, federal regulators said Wells Fargo employees secretly created millions of unauthorized bank and credit card accounts — without their customers knowing it — since 2011. The phony accounts earned the bank unwarranted fees from customers and allowed employees to boost their sales figures and make more money. The firings constitute approximately 1% of their workforce. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating a drive-by shooting that happened late Wednesday night at a Dollar Mart. KCCI-TV reports bullets chipped the paint and bricks on the side of the building, and no one was injured. Police are reviewing surveillance video. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A former substitute teacher accused of sexually exploiting a Cedar Rapids Washington High student has pled not guilty. KGAN-TV reports 24-year-old Mary Beth Haglin previously admitted to the relationship. Two school administrators resigned as a result of the scandal. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman inside of a Jimmy John’s bathroom in Iowa City. KCRG-TV reports 20-year-old Grant Ajango walked into the women’s bathroom and locked the door, ignoring the woman’s request to leave. He then slammed her against the wall and assaulted her. She was able to reach her phone to text “help” to her friends. Her friends and Jimmy John’s employees forced the door open, and were able to rescue her and detain Ajango. MONROE/LUCAS COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A plane crashed yesterday afternoon in Lucas County, according to KTVO-TV. The pilot died in the crash. No additional information has been released. OSCEOLA, IA (IRN) – A school bus rolled onto its side in a deep ditch in rural Clarke County yesterday, injuring seven students. KCCI-TV reports there were no serious injuries, but multiple students were taken to a hospital to be checked out. Authorities say the driver lost control on a curve and believe weather potentially played a role in the crash. AMES, IA (IRN) – An Ames family was able to escape their burning home safely Tuesday, but one pet is on the mend. WOI-TV reports Cleo the cat nearly lost her life in the fire. The cat stopped breathing, so Ames firefighters worked on her for about 30 minutes. Using a special pet revival oxygen mask, they were able to bring her back to life. She’s in a pet hospital for now, but the family says their beloved pet should be able to come home later this week.

NEWTON, IA (IRN) – A Grinnell man is behind bars, charged with kidnapping for allegedly holding a woman against her will in a motel. KCCI-TV reports 38-year-old Michael Darrow was arrested about 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites in Newton. Darrow held the woman against her will in a motel room, then beat and strangled her as she tried to get away. He said he would kill her if she screamed again, but she managed to escape and find help. OTTUMWA, IA – Two truck drivers were taken to the hospital early today after their semis collided nearly head-on. KTVO reports the crash happened before 6 a.m. on Highway 63, south of Ottumwa. The driver of a semi without a trailer was traveling south when the driver of a tractor-trailer was traveling north. They struck each other in the southbound lane, sending both trucks in opposite ditches. COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A Council Bluffs trial attorney who was disbarred after taking more than $99,000 from a client will be allowed to practice law again in Iowa. The Des Moines Register reports the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously ruled to reinstate the law license of Michael Reilly. Reilly took settlement money won during a lawsuit brought by the family of a boy who was left with permanent eye damage when he was attacked by a neighbor’s rooster. POLK CITY, IA (IRN) – One person died last night in a house fire in Polk City. KCCI-TV reports a person who lives in the home called 911 to report a fire. The victim was found in the basement and had been exposed to smoke and flames for an unknown amount of time. Firefighters put out the fire in approximately 15 minutes. CASCADE, IA (IRN) – Authorities in Dubuque County are looking into what led up to the near drowning of a toddler. KGAN-TV reports it happened Monday afternoon in Cascade. Investigators say a 13-month-old was left alone in the tub. When a parent came back into the room, the child was unconscious and underwater. The child’s condition has not been released. GUTTENBERG, IA (IRN) – Authorities have cited the driver of the Clayton Ridge school bus that killed another driver, according to KCRG-TV. Charlotte Scherer, of Guttenberg, is facing a charge for failure to yield while making a left turn. 50-year-old Ronald Kephart of Garnavillo hit the bus as it was turning. Kephart died in the crash. No one on the bus was injured. NEW YORK, NY (IRN) – Another for-profit college has gone bust, leaving tens of thousands of students in the lurch. ITT Educational Services announced Tuesday that it is shutting down immediately, accusing the federal government of unfairly stripping it of eligibility for student aid. The company has been the subject of state and federal probes for various reasons, including its recruitment tactics, lending practices and job placement figures. ITT has a campus in Des Moines.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – The University of Iowa has announced a contract extension for head football coach Kirk Ferentz. The new extension means Ferentz will be coach through the 2026 season. Ferentz’s total annual compensation under the new agreement will be $4,500,000. Ferentz and the members of his staff will also continue to be eligible for bonuses based on performance. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An Omaha man was injured after being thrown from a boat Sunday evening on the Missouri River in Harrison County, Iowa. 23-year-old Nathan Case was a passenger sitting in the front of an open bow boat when the vessel hit the wake from another boat causing him to fall out. The boat Case fell out of went over the top of him and he was hit by the propeller. He was not wearing a life-jacket, but other passengers were able to rescue him. He’s in serious condition. AMES, IA (IRN) – The former Cy-Ride bus driver who ran over and killed an Iowa State student is out of jail, according to KCCI-TV. Benjamin Clague was released after he completed his 30-day sentence and paid a $100 fine. He was driving the bus that hit 18-year-old Emmalee Jacobs last December in Ames. She later died from her injuries. POLK COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Sheriff’s deputies responded to a two-vehicle fatality collision Monday night in rural Polk County involving a car and a motorcycle. A Nissan Juke traveling northbound was struck head­-on by a southbound Harley Davidson motorcycle that took the curve too wide. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two occupants of the Nissan were transported to a local hospital with non­life threatening injuries. CLIVE, IA (IRN) – Two people are dead and two others were injured after a shooting outside of a packed party in Clive early Sunday morning. WHO-TV reports the incident happened at the 7 Flags Event Center. Upon arrival, officers found 44-year-old Kevin Hall with a gunshot wound to the torso. Hall died at the hospital. 29-year-old Johnny Jackson was dead at the scene. Multiple guns were involved, and 12-15 shots were fired. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – A Davenport man faces a first-degree murder charge after authorities say he killed his girlfriend during an argument. The Quad-City Times reports that 55-year-old Thomas Lopez assaulted 37-year-old Melissa Lewis at their home on Aug. 31. Lopez slapped, choked and pushed her, and when he pushed her for the fourth time, she fell back and hit her head on a window sill, killing her. BOONE, IA (IRN) – A man is in the hospital after being stabbed at the Boone Speedway early Monday, according to KCCI-TV. Police responded at 12:45 a.m. on reports of an assault where the victim had been stabbed. Upon arrival, officers found the victim with several stab wounds to his abdomen. 47-year-old Jeff Davis of La Porte City reportedly got into a fight with the victim and stabbed him. SPRINGVILLE, IA (IRN) – Thousands of dollars are going to help fight poverty in the eastern Iowa town of Springville. KCRG-TV reports this past weekend, people took a swing against poverty in the fourth annual wiffle ball tournament. Thirteen teams paid a fee to play this year. Event organizers aimed to raise more than $4,000. The money will go to local churches to help families buy food and school supplies.
