DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Police in Dubuque are looking into an attempted abduction from over the weekend, according to KCRG-TV. An 8-year-old girl was riding her bike when a man in a vehicle tried to get her to get in by telling her there was a puppy inside. The girl ran away and told her mom, who called police. The suspect is at large. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The first cases of the West Nile virus have been identified in Iowa for 2016. The Iowa Department of Public Health confirmed a female child and an adult male, both of Sioux County, were hospitalized due to the virus but are now recovering. Since West Nile first appeared in Iowa in 2002, it has been found in every county in Iowa, either in humans, horses, or birds. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two southeast Iowa men face multiple charges after they shot deer and left them to rot. 30-year-old Ryan Matthew Greiner of Morning Sun and 19-year-old Treyton Hartman of Yarmouth, were charged after search warrants on their residences were conducted. Greiner faces multiple charges related to taking 18 deer illegally, Hartman one. Greiner faces multiple drug charges as well. Both were hunting by artificial light. GARNER, IA (IRN) – A boy died after an apparently accidental shooting at a firing range near the northern Iowa town of Garner. KIMT-TV reports a grandfather took two boys to a range used by the Garner Police Department Sunday. A 10-year-old boy was shot, and later died at the hospital. AMES, IA (IRN) – Twenty vehicle fires and dozens of car burglaries in Ames were reported within a three-week period last September. KCCI-TV reports almost a year later, an arrest has been made. Roman Hart was arrested Monday and charged with three counts of second-degree arson and third-degree burglary. Friends and neighbors were surprised. One described him as a “sweet kid.” WATERLOO, IA (IRN) – Waterloo police are looking for a driver that hit a moped and fled the scene, according to KCRG-TV. But authorities say the moped driver shares some of the blame for the crash. The moped didn’t have a working headlight. The driver of the moped had minor injurIes and wasn’t taken to the hospital. He did get several traffic tickets, including one for driving without a working headlight. RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (IRN) – A native of Webster City did something Tuesday night no other American woman has ever done in the Olympics. WHO-TV reports Jenny Simpson earned the bronze medal in the 1500m, becoming the first U.S. woman to ever win an Olympic medal in the event.

CHICAGO, IA (IRN) – An Iowa man wanted on charges of attempted murder in connection with the shooting of a Boone man has been arrested in Chicago. WHO-TV reports 23-year old Kevin Williams was taken into custody Sunday morning. Williams is accused of shooting 29-year-old Leonard Boyd III, and leaving him in the street with gunshot wounds. SOMERS, IA (IRN) – A judge in the northwest Iowa town of Somers has dismissed a flag desecration charge against a man who protested a crude oil pipeline crossing his property by hanging an American flag upside down at his home. KCRG-TV reports the charge against Homer Martz was under a state law a federal judge ruled unconstitutional in 2014. Martz, a 63-year-old U.S. Army veteran, is upset the state is allowing the pipeline to run near his well. PLEASANT HILL, IA (IRN) – A body was pulled from the Des Moines River Monday afternoon. WHO-TV reports a passerby called 9-1-1 after spotting the body in the water near the Vandalia Boat Ramp in Pleasant Hill. Police say it was a body of a man, but they do not know the identity of the person. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – A man and a juvenile vandalized Central Elementary school in Coralville last week. KCRG-TV reports 25-year-old Kevin Ventura-Jimenez and a juvenile accomplice walked on the freshly painted gym floor, spilled soda on the wet paint, splashed paint on walls, and poured paint on a door. The night before they poured sugar into the gas tank of a skid loader parked at the school. When caught, one still had wet paint on the bottom of their shoes. CHARLES CITY, IA (IRN) – Charges are piling up against a Charles City man, according to KIMT-TV. Daniel Connerley was arrested after authorities executed search warrants and recovered items from at least seven burglaries. He faces theft, ongoing criminal conduct, and drug charges. Police say Connerley stole money from gaming machines at establishments in Colwell, Floyd and Charles City. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An Indianola family became trapped in the Baton Rouge flooding, according to KCCI-TV. They were moving their son to Baton Rouge when the flooding occurred. A knock on the hotel room door signaled an evacuation order. Guests were taken to safety by a flotilla of fishing and crawfish boats. They lost their car in the flooding, but are grateful to be safe. They plan to return home this week.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – Mason City police are investigating after a man died shortly after he was found in the street. KIMT-TV reports police officers administered emergency first aid. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after arrival. MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – A 75-year-old woman died and two others were injured following a traffic accident in Muscatine Sunday. WQAD-TV reports two vehicles crashed at an intersection, and the driver of one of the vehicles, 75-year-old Cheri Cook of Muscatine, was trapped in her car. Fire and rescue were able to free her and transport her to a local hospital but she later died. The other two had minor injuries. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – Police are investigating an alleged child abduction attempt in Dubuque, according to KWWL-TV. A man driving an older model dark green SUV invited an 8-year-old girl into the vehicle. He claimed to have a puppy. The girl ran from the SUV and told her mother about the incident. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Des Moines Police Department is investigating a homicide after finding a deceased male inside a Des Moines home on Sunday. WHO-TV reports officers responded to investigate a report of a suspicious death, and found the dead man inside the home. Police have no suspects in custody. This is the ninth homicide in Des Moines in 2016. INDIANOLA, IA (IRN) – An inmate has escaped from the Warren County Jail, according to KCCI-TV. 26-year-old Scott Grimes escaped Sunday while a correctional officer was delivering medication to inmates. Grimes got behind the correctional officer and ran from custody. He was being held for assault on a peace officer, theft, burglary, and drug charges. He is now believed to be with Kayla Schultz in a stolen Kia Rio. She is wanted in Missouri for vehicle theft. CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Children’s Museum has dedicated an exhibit to an employee who was killed on the job. The exhibit opened Saturday, and is dedicated to Andrea Farrington. Farrington was shot to death by Alexander Kozak last June inside the mall. The exhibit is turquoise — Farrington’s favorite color — and houses a turtle and some fish. Kozak is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. WINTHROP, IA (IRN) – A Buchanan County woman was crowned the 2016 Iowa State Fair Queen Saturday evening. 20-year-old Amanda Riniker was chosen out of 103 contestants. Riniker is a graduate of East Buchanan High School and now attends Wartburg College, majoring in Neuroscience. She receives a $5,000 scholarship from the Iowa Governor’s Office and a $3,000 scholarship from the Iowa State Fair.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 2-year-old boy found dead in a Grimes home last month died of a drug overdose. KCCI-TV reports autopsy results show Mason Wyckoff died of acute oxycodone toxicity. His mother, 33-year-old Stephanie Erickson, was found unresponsive and later died. Mason’s father said the mother had received psychiatric care for suicidal tendencies in the past. MT SHASTA, CA (IRN) – An Iowa man died while hiking Mount Shasta with his 16-year-old son on Thursday, according to the Des Moines Register. 54-year-old James Sieleman fell about 150 yards down a steep, ice-covered slope. A helicopter was able to rescue Sieleman’s son. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The annual St. Jude’s Sweet Corn Festival in Cedar Rapids was shut down early last night due to fights. KCRG-TV reports a group of about 70 juveniles caused multiple disturbances. Police say most of the juveniles scattered, but officers detained six. The arrested juveniles face charges ranging from disorderly conduct to assault on a police officer. The festival will continue as scheduled today. INDIANAPOLIS, IN (IRN) – A team from the Johnston Little League is on its way to the Little League World Series. Johnston beat Frontenac, Kansas 3-0 in the Midwest Regional Final to advance. Johnston’s first game in Williamsport, PA will be Friday.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A family of four has survived a plane crash in Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports the family was taking off in their private aircraft and had to deploy the parachute. The parachute snagged on a stoplight. The accident is under investigation. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids man has been accused of starting his mother’s garage on fire. KCRG-TV reports a woman came home and found scorch marks on her detached garage. She told investigators she thought her son, 18-year-old Kyle Netolicky, was responsible. Officers determined Netolicky had intentionally started the garage on fire, and he’s in jail. SOMERS, IA (IRN) – An Iowa man who flew a U.S. flag upside down under a Chinese flag to protest future placement of an oil pipeline near his home, has been charged with desecrating the American banner. The Fort Dodge Messenger reports Homer Martz says the pipeline will be placed without his consent next to the well supplying his home with water near Somers. He says he didn’t know he was desecrating the flag, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail. LE MARS, IA (IRN) – The Le Mars gospel group “The Browns” will be inducted into America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame, according to the Sioux City Journal. The Browns perform inside the family’s intimate 150-seat performance theater in downtown Le Mars. Artists are nominated into America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame by musicians who’ve already been inducted. LECLAIRE, IA (IRN) – 11 teams from Port Byron, Illinois and LeClaire, Iowa will compete this weekend to see who can tug the hardest. The 30th Annual Tug Fest goes all weekend with live music, parades and carnival rides. Today a 680-pound rope will stretch 2,400 feet across the Mississippi River. Then, competitors will have three minutes to see who can pull the most rope. It’s a fundraiser for local fire and police departments.
