RUNNELLS, IA (IRN) – A Runnells man and a Minnesota woman face charges in a human trafficking case. KCCI-TV reports 50-year-old Michael Lee Williams of Runnells and 48-year-old Cynthia Mitteness of Mayer, Minnesota have been charged. The abuse was discovered by the father of a 9-year-old female Minnesota resident after he saw alarming social media messages between his wife, Cynthia Mitteness and Michael Williams regarding abuse of the child. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Transportation is closing two driver’s license stations and seven maintenance garages because of reduced funding from the Iowa Legislature. KCRG-TV reports the changes do not include layoffs, but 67 open positions will be permanently removed. The driver’s license stations closings are in Spencer and Carroll. The maintenance garages are in Sabula, Akron, Soldier, Corning, Gowrie, Rock Valley, and Centerville. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A store clerk’s unexpected scream foiled a robber’s plans in Des Moines Monday, according to KCCI-TV. A man approached the walk-up window at the Southside Tobacco & Liquor and asked for two cigarette cartons. When the clerk came back with them, the man pulled out a pistol and pointed it at her demanding money. She screamed “he has a gun,” and the man ran away. WEST DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A new gas station chain is coming to Iowa, according to the Des Moines Business Record. Brookwood Financial Partners announced that it will acquire 21 convenience stores in Iowa from Kum & Go. The new gas station brand will be called Yesway. The company plans to have 31 stores in Iowa and plans to grow to up to 1,000 stores in the Midwest. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – The man who led Cedar Rapids police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash that killed a city employee and Palo firefighter will spend up to 40 years in prison. KCRG-TV reports on Monday, a judge sentenced 48-year-old Lawson Chadwick for homicide by vehicle while under the influence of meth, among other charges. WASHINGTON, D.C. – A small Confederate flag on Rep. Steve King’s desk at the U.S. Capitol is sparking criticism, according to KCCI-TV. Betty Andrews, president of the Iowa-Nebraska NAACP, called King’s actions “anti-Iowa,” as “Iowa fought on the Union side,” and says that “the Confederate flag is a symbol of division and slavery.” Governor Branstad agrees. Republican Party of Iowa Chair Jeff Kaufmann says he’s “embarrassed,” and “disgusted,” by the display. INDIANAPOLIS, IN (IRN) – Former ISU basketball star Georges Niang has signed a three year contract worth $2.6 million dollars with the Indiana Pacers, according to KWWL-TV. The first year is fully guaranteed at $650,000. Niang has played in five summer league games so far with the Pacers, averaging more than ten points and six rebounds a game. WAUKEE, IA (IRN) – A 6-year-old boy from Waukee thought police officers in town might be sad because of the shootings of officers in Dallas, and decided to do something to make them happy. WHO-TV reports Brendan Bowman used the money the Tooth Fairy gave him to buy donuts for police officers because he wanted them to know he was thinking about them. Chief John Quinn says the entire department was “touched” by the boys gift.

CORALVILLE, IA (IRN) – The Coralville police are looking for a black SUV after it crashed into the Spin City laundromat early this morning. KGAN-TV reports the driver of the vehicle fled the scene after the crash. The laundromat is still operating despite having a large hole in the front of the building. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A police officer was assaulted by a man inside a Des Moines Walmart Saturday, according to KCCI-TV. The officer was working off-duty at the Walmart when employees reported a man in the dairy department “acting crazy,” spraying air freshener at customers and breaking bottles. When confronted by the officer, 43-year-old John Phillip DelFranco, punched the officer and shoved him into the dairy case. 4-5 Walmart employees jumped on to help get the 220-pound man into handcuffs. LAKE RED ROCK, IA (IRN) -Two people died in separate drowning incidents at Lake Red Rock Sunday evening, according to KNIA/KRLS radio. 6-year-old Alexi Oquendo of Newton drowned while swimming, and 50-year-old Daniel Tutor of Des Moines drowned while kayaking. Both had life-jackets in their possession, but weren’t wearing them. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man has been charged after allegedly stabbing another man in the neck Saturday night, according to the Des Moines Register. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found a man lying in the street covered in blood. The victim was taken into surgery and is expected to survive. Police identified 33-year-old Thea Ngov of Des Moines as a suspect and arrested him. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – One person is in custody after Davenport police investigated a shots fired call Saturday night, according to WQAD-TV. 23-year-old Austin Young of Davenport is charged with assault on a peace officer and possession of marijuana. Young and the victim were together in the victim’s vehicle in front of a liquor store when an argument started. The victim is OK, but his vehicle was hit several times with bullets. LUCAS, IA (IRN) – A woman died after the horse she was riding fell and landed on top of her at an Iowa park. The incident happened Saturday afternoon near Lucas in south-central Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the woman was airlifted from Stephens State Forest to a Des Moines hospital where she later died. AMES, IA (IRN) – An Ames man is recovering from a gunshot wound after being shot early Sunday morning, according to WHO-TV. The victim and a witness say they were walking at approximately 3:30 a.m. when an unidentified person fired several gunshots at them. The victim was shot in the leg. HAMBURG, IA (IRN) – A Page County priest was arrested Saturday morning after he allegedly tried to persuade an undercover source to perform sexual acts in exchange for money. KJAN-radio reports that Fremont County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 40-year-old Rev. Dominic Yamoah, of Clarinda in the prostitution sting. CHEROKEE, IA (IRN) – Leaders in the northwest Iowa town of Cherokee want to see another company make use of the former Tyson Foods meat-processing plant just outside town, but they say the food company is making it hard to find a new tenant. The Des Moines Register reports that Tyson continues paying $130,000 annually in rent on the building and holds a clause in the lease allowing it to refuse bids from competitors. Cherokee City Councilman Chad Brown says Tyson is holding the town hostage.

OTTUMWA, IA (IRN) – Two people were taken to the hospital after a four-vehicle pile up in Ottumwa Friday. KTVO-TV reports all four vehicles were traveling north on Highway 63 around 2 p.m. The first vehicle slowed down to turn into a gas station. Another driver failed to stop, hitting the first vehicle and causing a chain reaction involving two more vehicles. WEST BRANCH, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Transportation may widen Interstate 80 east of Iowa City from four lanes to six lanes. The study will look at the stretch of interstate from Iowa City to just past the West Branch exit. Interstate 80 has proven to be dangerous in that area. In February, three people were hurt in three crashes involving 33 vehicles near the West Branch exit on the same day. MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – Crews have been busy cleaning up the Muscatine riverfront as the eastern Iowa city prepares for thousands of bicyclists to visit during RAGBRAI. The Muscatine Journal reports that crews have been dredging the Mississippi River where RAGBRAI riders will dip their tires at the end of the ride. City officials say without the dredging, riders coming to dip their bike tires in the river would find only large amounts of wet sediment. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A woman and her friends are passing out water bottles, flowers and hugs to people in downtown Iowa City. KCRG-TV reports Jamie Miller, an Iowa City resident, says she wanted to spread happiness after recent tragedies in Dallas, Louisiana and Minnesota. Henry Emmons was walking by and says he was grateful to receive the small act of kindness. “I love it,” he said. “we’ve got to do some kind of action and what better thing to do than be kind.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids home was damaged by gunfire after a shooting which may have been sparked by an argument over a parking space. Mary Jo Kerns says she was with her boyfriend getting some food at a restaurant, when the argument started between her boyfriend and a stranger. The stranger followed them home and shot at the house. RINGGOLD COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Five people were killed in a crash on Highway 2 near Mount Ayr on Friday, according to the Iowa State Patrol. An SUV carrying seven passengers ran a stop sign into the path of a semi. Two adults from Redding, a 12-year-old, and a 2-year old were killed. A 4-year-old from Grant City, Missouri was also killed. A 9-year-old and a 1-year old were hospitalized. The driver of the truck was uninjured. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Davenport police shot and killed a pit bull that attacked an officer who was responding to a fight Friday morning, according to WQAD-TV. Two adults and a juvenile were arrested during the disturbance. While officers were dealing with the combatants, a pit bull charged out of the front door of a residence, attacking an officer and biting him. The officer who was bitten fired his service weapon and killed the dog. STORM LAKE, IA (IRN) – An attempt to cash an Iowa lottery ticket worth $250,000 has prompted an investigation. WHO-TV reports the “$250,000 Dollar Riches” scratch ticket was brought to the Storm Lake office of the Iowa Lottery to be cashed. The ticket had scribbling all over its back side, raising questions about whether the person possessing it was the original winner. The DCI is investigating. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The annual 80/35 concert is underway in downtown Des Moines. KCCI-TV reports police are keeping the peace and reacting to the slayings of five officers in Dallas. Police Sgt. Debra Richardson said the atmosphere was different Friday night. She says that as she walked through the crowd, she lost count of the number of people who felt compelled to approach her and thank her for her service.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (IRN) – A Council Bluffs woman has been arrested after she viciously beat her husband with a snow globe. The Daily Nonpareil reports that officers found 29-year-old Christopher Evens bloodied and bruised. He and his wife, 35-year-old Jennifer Evens, had been arguing when she picked up a snow globe and began bashing him on the head with it. Police say she didn’t stop, even after breaking the globe on her husband’s face, cutting him. LAKE VIEW, IA (IRN) – A personal water craft exploded Tuesday on Black Hawk Lake in Sac County sending two people to the hospital. 40-year-old Chris Forman and his wife, 41-year-old Angie of Omaha flipped the craft. They got the vehicle upright, but gasoline had leaked into the engine compartment causing it to explode while being started. Both were thrown into the water by the blast, but were wearing life jackets. They’re OK. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – A Cedar Rapids teenager faces attempted murder and robbery charges after he fired a gun multiple times at three people in Iowa City. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that the 16-year-old was arrested Wednesday. The teen and his victims were engaged in an ongoing dispute. The teen demanded that his victims empty their pockets, threatened to shoot them, and fired at them as they fled. No one was injured. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines woman reported missing on Wednesday has been found safe, according to KCCI-TV. She had left home for a meeting with a man she met on the dating site Plenty of Fish. Her twin sister became concerned after she had been gone for a day and wasn’t answering her phone. DAVENPORT, IA (IRN) – Federal charges have been filed against a Davenport man accused of trying to blow up an apartment where he lived with his girlfriend and her young son. The Quad-City Times reports 44-year-old Gramann Barnes and his girlfriend argued, then he hurt her and her 2-year-old son. After she took her child and left, Barnes placed paper towels inside the oven, fixed the burners on the stove to spew gas, turned on the oven and left. SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE (IRN) – A Sioux City man has pled not guilty to assaulting two men with his sport utility vehicle in Nebraska. The Sioux City Journal reports that 47-year-old Ruben Vela argued with the other men on June 6 at a South Sioux City hotel. He then drove his SUV into a parked car, forcing it against a hotel wall and pinning two men standing behind the car. One of the men had to have his lower left leg amputated. CLARION, IA (IRN) – An attempted abduction in Clarion has the town on-edge. WHO-TV reports four children between the ages of 4 and 12 were playing outside when they were tempted with candy by 19-year-old Victor Gomez to get into his car. Police arrived, and Gomez ran. He was found later hiding in a trailer home. He was arrested, but posted bond and police aren’t sure where he is. As a result, police are increasing their patrols around town. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Four Rotary clubs in Johnson County are having a food fight — but it’s not the kind of food fight we normally expect. KGAN-TV reports the Rotary clubs are trying to collect as much food as they can with a friendly competition to see which group can give the most to those in need. All the food collected will be given to the Crisis Center of Johnson County’s “Thanksgiving in July” event.
