DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An officer involved shooting has sent one suspect to the hospital and another is in custody. WHO-TV reports Clive Police Department officers attempted to pull over a gray Dodge Charger for a traffic violation at approximately 2:30 a.m. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, sped away, but lost control and crashed. Two suspects then fled on foot. One suspect pulled out a pistol and the officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect. Medical personnel were called and sent the suspect to the hospital. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The condition of the suspect is unknown at this time. The second suspect was apprehended shortly after.

BREMER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Tripoli woman is facing a felony charge for the suspicious death of a dependent adult in May. Debra Kleppe, 56, is charged with non-support of a dependent adult in the death of Sylvia Schwerin, 77, of Sumner. Schwerin suffered accidental burns that contributed to her death that were never treated.

WASHINGTON, DC (IRN) – An outside group founded by top political aides to Sen. Joni Ernst has worked closely with the Iowa Republican to raise money and boost her reelection prospects, a degree of overlap that potentially violates the law. WHO-TV reports Iowa Values, a political nonprofit that is supposed to be run independently, was co-founded in 2017 by Ernst’s longtime consultant, Jon Kohan. It shares a fundraiser, Claire Holloway Avella, with the Ernst campaign.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – City of Dubuque Mayor Roy Buol is calling for an investigation into Councilman Jake Rios for releasing information shared in closed session meetings. In early November, Rios released documents giving insight into why some city council members wanted to fire Dubuque City Manager Mike Van Milligen. Among those documents were audio recordings. Buol says Iowa Code bans releasing recordings of closed sessions.

GRINNELL, IA (IRN) – Six Democratic presidential candidates took the stage in Grinnell Friday taking questions directly from farmers. The candidates included Sen. Amy Kobuchar, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Tom Steyer, John Delaney, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Corey Booker. Topics included climate change, trade, small farm struggles, and more.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – An Ankeny business owner was arrested Wednesday for allegedly selling products containing cannabidiol, or CBD, while unlicensed by the state, the first charge of its kind in Polk County, according to the county attorney’s office. Ankeny police arrested Lacie Navin, 33, of Des Moines at her business, Your CBD Store.

LU VERNE, IA (IRN) – A Coralville man faces a murder charge for a deadly bank robbery, according to KGAN-TV. 35-year-old Valentino Williams is also charged with robbery. He’s behind bars in the Kossuth County jail. Police say he shot a 43-year-old woman outside of the Security State Bank in Lu Verne yesterday morning before the bank opened. Bank employee Jessica Weishaar, of Algona, died at the scene.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man is in Polk County Jail on charges stemming from a fatal crash on I-235 in November. KCCI-TV reports police charged 23-year-old Devin Russell Smith with one count of homicide by vehicle — drag racing in connection with the death of 22-year-old Dimitrious Galvan. Galvan was thrown from his vehicle and died after losing control and crashing. Their vehicles reached speeds in excess of 100 mph.

BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – Iowa congressional candidate Bobby Schilling has fired his campaign political coordinator. WQAD-TV reports the blowback comes after an immigration forum at a church in Bettendorf on Monday that featured a far-right activist with links to white nationalists. Schilling, a Republican candidate for Iowa’s 2nd District, fired his campaign field director Michael Sisco, after it became clear to him that Sisco allowed a far-right activist to speak at the forum.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines police officer was turning right at a red light when the officer hit and injured a pedestrian Thursday, according to WHO-TV. The woman suffered minor injuries. She’s expected to be okay.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating after a person was stabbed in the neck this morning. KCCI-TV reports a suspect took off after the stabbing, but is now in custody. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Blood was visible on the outside of the home.

CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – A shooting killed one person in Cedar Falls on Wednesday night, according to KCRG-TV. Officers responded to a call of shots fired and found a man dead in an apartment who had been shot. The suspects left the scene before officers arrived.

MOLINE, IL (IRN) – A Davenport woman has been sentenced to spend more than a decade in prison after being found guilty in connection with the traffic crash death of a Milan, Illinois woman. WQAD-TV reports Amy Taylor, age 28, was one of three people charged in an incident where a stolen van crashed and killed 51-year-old Tammy Loos in March of 2019.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 7-year-old boy is safe after someone stole a vehicle while he was asleep inside Wednesday. KCCI-TV reports a black 1999 Dodge 15000 was stolen around 8:30 p.m. Authorities were able to locate the vehicle and child around 9 p.m. He’s OK, but no suspects are in custody.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Beaverdale couple is fighting food insecurity from their front yard, thanks to what they say was a divine intervention. WHO-TV reports homeowner Megan Ries says, “we’re really strong Christians and we felt God’s nudge,” about what prompted her and her husband to set up a tiny free food pantry. The pantry opened for business last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. It’s stocked with non-perishable food items and personal hygiene items. Passersby are asked to take what they need and leave what they can.

ALGONA, IA (IRN) – A life sentence has been handed down for a Kossuth County killing. KIMT-TV reports Jeffrey Lynn Winters, 61, of Livermore, was found guilty in October of 1st degree murder. Law enforcement says he shot Randy Merle Page to death in Page’s Lu Verne garage in August 2018. On Tuesday, Winters was ordered to spend the rest of his life behind bars. He must also pay $150,000 in restitution to Page’s widow.

NORWAY, IA (IRN) – At attempted traffic stop in the Benton county town of Norway on Monday night led to a pursuit. KCRG-TV reports during the chase, the driver rammed two sheriff’s department vehicles. The chase ended when the vehicle drove into Prairie Creek, and the suspect escaped. But, deputies were able to identify the man. He faces numerous charges.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Voters in Des Moines took part in a runoff election to decide a rather testy election for mayor. Unofficial results show longtime Mayor Frank Cownie defeated former Iowa Senator Jack Hatch by a narrow 289-vote margin. The election has been anything but normal for the city, with both campaigns releasing attack ads accusing the other of misusing taxpayer money.

AMES, IA (IRN) – ISU Head Football Coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a contract extension through 2025. Campbell led Iowa State to a 7-5 record this season and the program’s third straight bowl game. Campbell’s record at Iowa State is 26-24 in four seasons.

AMES, IA (IRN) – History was made in the Ames City Council runoff election Tuesday night.
Twenty-year-old Iowa State University student Rachel Junck beat incumbent Councilman Chris Nelson in Ward 4 with 54 percent of the vote. Junck is an Ames native studying chemical engineering at Iowa State. She is now the youngest woman ever to be elected to office in Iowa.
