COUNCIL BLUFFS, OA (IRN) – A former city clerk in southwestern Iowa has been sentenced to five years of probation and six months of home confinement for stealing thousands of dollars from the city. Federal prosecutors say 57-year-old Carol Jennings also was ordered Tuesday to pay more than $77,000 in restitution. Jennings was clerk of Riverton. She opened two accounts with a local bank using falsified documents and deposited city funds into the accounts. Prosecutors say she then converted most of the money for her own use.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) The Diocese of Des Moines released the names of nine priests who are credibly accused of sexually abusing children while working for the diocese between the 1950s and the 1990s.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – A Dubuque police officer is in the hospital after he came into contact with a substance and got sick. KCRG-TV reports police were executing a warrant at an apartment when the officer became ill. Fellow officers performed emergency treatment at the scene. The officer is at a Dubuque hospital receiving treatment. He is in stable condition.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Police arrested a Des Moines middle school student for assaulting two teachers and a counselor Tuesday at McCombs middle school. WHO-TV reports the student threatened to assault a classmate. A teacher stepped in and was punched in the face and chest causing a bloody nose. Another teacher who tried to intervene was punched in the neck. Attempting to calm the student, a third woman, the school counselor, was punched four times in her chest and face, breaking her glasses. It took two men to restrain the student who was then taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

IOWA (IRN) – Republican state leaders are brushing off President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated comments about wind energy as hot air, saying the industry has brought numerous benefits to Iowa. Trump told a crowd at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual spring dinner Tuesday night that he heard that noise from wind turbines causes cancer. Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley called Trump’s comments “idiotic.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – An eastern Iowa man who was missing for months before his remains were found buried on a Cedar Rapids property was fatally stabbed during a fight over the robbery of a drug trafficker. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports Christopher Bagley, 31, was reported missing after he left his Walker home Dec. 13 and never returned. His remains were found March 1. Bagley was stabbed with a knife during a fight with two people who sold drugs. The men then drove Bagley to one of their homes, where they buried his body.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A person was stabbed Tuesday in Des Moines at a McDonalds in an argument over a food order. KCCI-TV reports one person was stabbed in the leg and taken to a hospital. The injury is not life-threatening and no arrests have been made.

MASON CITY, IA (IRN) – A Mason City man accused of stabbing five people in a bar is changing his plea. KIMT-TV reports Raul Millares Arias, 39, is now entering an Alford plea to five counts of willful injury resulting in serious injury and one count of going armed with intent. Police say the victims were stabbed in the neck and back but none of the wounds were life-threatening. By entering an Alford plea, Millares Arias does not admit guilt but concedes he could be convicted at trial and agrees to accept sentencing.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Private school students, teachers and parents filled the Iowa rotunda Tuesday in one of the largest rallies of the year to lobby lawmakers for school vouchers that will allow them to use money currently dedicated to public schools for private school tuition. Supporters say it allows more school choice. Opponents say it will harm public schools.

DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – The Dubuque Regional Humane Society has potbelly pigs up for adoption. The organization received 13 pigs from a shelter in Texas, according to society President Laura Merrick. She said adoptions are already pending on three. Merrick believes the pigs likely ended up in a shelter due to overcrowding on a farm or because families couldn’t care for them. She said the pigs make great pets.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Congressman Steve King is being threatened with a lawsuit over a meme shared on his social media pages. The second Civil War related meme was posted to King’s Facebook page last month. It was deleted from Representative King’s page shortly after it was posted. Now, the artist of the picture wants Steve King to apologize. The artist says he wants the apology by Friday, or he will sue the representative for copyright infringement.

KEOKUK, IA (IRN) – A collision between a motorist and a bicyclist in Keokuk has resulted in the death of a teenager. A vehicle driven by an 18-year-old from Fort Madison collided with a bicycle ridden by a 15-year-old. The bicyclist was killed.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – About 75 employees were evacuated from the Collins Aerospace Recreation Center in Cedar Rapids due to a threat Monday morning. KCRG-TV reports someone phoned in an anonymous threat that an explosive device was placed inside the center. No device was found, and employees returned after about 90 minutes.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A historic northside Des Moines restaurant is without its owner.
KCCI-TV reports Paul Strome, owner of Sambetti’s, died of a massive heart attack at the age of 64 on March 25. Regulars compare the restaurant to “Cheers,” a place where everybody knows your name. Without its beloved owner, friends and family alike said Monday that Sambetti’s suffered a great loss. Regular Bill Gray said Strome’s death created a metaphorical hole at the bar. “You just keep looking to see he’s going to walk through that door any time now and everything is going to be back to normal.” Gray said. The restaurant has been in the family for 40 years.

GREENSBORO, NC (IRN) – The Iowa women’s basketball season ended in the Elite 8, as the Hawkeyes fell to Baylor 85-53. Iowa was led by Megan Gustafson’s game-high scoring effort. The senior’s 23 points put her over 1,000 for the season. She is just the fourth player in NCAA history to accomplish that feat.

BOONE, IA (IRN) – Fire crews were called to a house fire in Boone that sent two people to the hospital early this morning. KCCI-TV reports two people, a man and a woman, were inside the home and were hospitalized in the incident. Fire officials said the home is about a block away from the emergency dispatch center in Boone, and the man ran from the burning home to alert officials to the fire.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The jury trial of a woman accused of striking and killing a Des Moines man while she was intoxicated is set to begin today. WHO-TV reports Oleaf Teoh, 23, is facing several charges including vehicular homicide and operating a car while under the influence. Teoh allegedly left the scene of the accident and was arrested later.

BURLINGTON, IA (IRN) – A man is on the run after robbing a Burlington convenience store last night. WQAD-TV reports the man approached the store clerk with a pistol in hand while wearing a surgical mask. He took an undisclosed amount of money and left the store on foot. No one was hurt.

PLEASANT HILL, IA (IRN) – Authorities are trying to figure out how a truck landed in the Des Moines River in Pleasant Hill. KCCI-TV reports emergency response personnel were sent to the river for a water rescue. When officials arrived at the scene, they found the truck but no one inside. The truck was stolen in Des Moines.

GREENSBORO, NC. (IRN) – Megan Gustafson had 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Iowa women’s basketball team past North Carolina State 79-61 on Saturday in the Greensboro Regional semifinals. Gustafson, who averages a Division I-best 28 points while also ranking second in rebounding, finished with her 33rd double-double to match the NCAA’s single-season record. She made 10 of her 13 shots. This helped the second-seeded Hawkeyes (29-6) earn their first Elite Eight appearance since 1993. Iowa will play top-seeded Baylor tonight with the winner advancing to the Final Four.
