WASHINGTON, IA (IRN) – Two people were arrested in Washington and face felony charges of child endangerment. KCII-Radio reports officers arrested 34-year-old Jerry Herbert Davis of Washington for child endangerment, a class D felony, and a tattoo permit requirement. Officers also arrested 38-year-old Monica Ann Wood, of the same address as Davis, for child endangerment, a class D felony. Davis and Wood were both taken to the Washington County Jail.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines community center for the Monsoon Asians and Pacific Islanders in Solidarity organization was vandalized over the weekend. WHO-TV reports every wall is now covered in vulgar graffiti and gang related symbols. Holes were punched into doors, and windows were broken. The community center holds support group meetings for victims of assault, domestic violence and human trafficking.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Two Des Moines mayoral candidates will go head-to-head in a runoff election next month, according to unofficial election results. Incumbent Mayor Frank Cownie and former state Sen. Jack Hatch will be up for election Dec. 3. Cownie and Hatch ran against Army veteran Chase Holm and retired teacher and coach Joe Grandanette. The election will move to a runoff because no candidate received 50% plus one vote.

IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Members and employees of the governing board for Iowa’s public universities could soon be barred from gambling on the college teams they help oversee.
A policy proposed by the Board of Regents would bar board members and staff from betting on games involving the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Iowa State Cyclones or the University of Northern Iowa Panthers. The board will consider adopting the policy at its meeting next week in Cedar Falls.

AMES, IA (IRN) – Researchers at Iowa State University say the gloves firefighters use to protect their hands while fighting a fire could be safer. KCRG-TV reports the ISU researchers are working to create better ones, making them more protective, dexterous and comfortable. A $1.5 million dollar grant from FEMA and Department of Homeland Security is paying for the research.
