FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – Officials are investigating after a Fort Dodge restaurant caught fire early Thursday morning. Crews responded to a structure fire at the Casablanca Steak House at 4:30 a.m. Firefighters saw flames shooting from the roof at the rear of the building when they arrived. No one was injured.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa State Patrol is deploying extra enforcement to combat the deadliest holiday on the road. The Iowa State Patrol reports four people died in 2018 on Iowa roads during Thanksgiving and two of the accidents were alcohol related.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A family of eight had to evacuate their Cedar Rapids home Thanksgiving due to a fire on their stove. KGAN-TV reports the fire was contained to the kitchen, but it did sustain heavy damage. There were no injuries.

LINCOLN, NE (IRN) – A nurse practitioner from Iowa and a Nebraska farmer who died trying to rescue motorists will be honored today at the Heroes Game in Lincoln between the Cornhuskers and the Hawkeyes. KIMT-TV reports Katie Gudenkauf was attending an indoor soccer tournament in March when one of the players collapsed. Officials say Gudenkauf performed first aid on the player, saving his life. James Wilke, a Columbus, Nebraska farmer was killed March 14, during the historic flooding. He was crossing a bridge with his tractor, trying to reach stranded motorists, when the bridge collapsed. He was swept away, and his body was found downstream.

AURORA, IA (IRN) – The population of Aurora, Iowa nearly doubles on Thanksgiving Day each year, according to KCRG-TV The town of about 180 people is flooded with about 120 members of the Brunkhorst family. This year, the gathering highlighted the family’s thankfulness for veterans. Each veteran in the family received a Quilt of Honor, a gift that’s a token of thanks to those who have served.
