DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines voters will head to the polls Tuesday to select a mayor and two city council members. The runoff election, which was required after none of the candidates secured more than 50% of the vote total in the Nov. 5 general election, will cost taxpayers an estimated $85,000.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – In the case of a triple homicide that occurred in July, the state is calling an 8-year-old to testify against his father. KCCI-TV reports Marvin Esquivel-Lopez was charged with three counts of first-degree murder after police said he killed 29-year-old Rossibeth Flores-Rodriguez, her 11-year-old daughter, Grecia Daniela Alvarado-Flores, and her 5-year-old son, Ever Jose Mejia-Flores. J.E., the 8-year-old son of Esquivel-Lopez, is an eyewitness. The woman and children were each shot in the head twice.

JASPER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – Two are dead and one is injured after a vehicle crashed in Jasper County on Friday. Dallis Harrison, 23, of Newton, was driving at approximately 7 a.m. and, for “unknown reasons,” rolled several times. Harrison and Isaiah Eilander, 16, of Garwin, were ejected. Kylie Eilander, 15, of Garwin, remained in the vehicle, and suffered serious injuries. She was transferred to a hospital by an ambulance. No one was wearing a seat belt.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A woman who stole thousands of dollars from the Open Bible Churches organization in the Des Moines area has been given a suspended prison sentence and forgiveness by the organization’s leaders. The Des Moines Register reports 55-year-old Michelene Kinning was sentenced to two years’ probation and a suspended 10-year prison term. She also paid more than $154,000 in restitution.

LINCOLN, NE (IRN) – The Hawkeyes managed to hold off the Cornhuskers to pick up its 9th win of the season. Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored twice early for the Hawkeyes, as Iowa jumped out to a 24-10 lead at the half. Nebraska would use a 14-point third quarter to tie the game. Keith Duncan hit the game winner leaving one second on the clock from 48 yards out.
