DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting 414 more COVID-19 cases and seven deaths in the last 24 hours. As of 10:15 a.m. on July 8, the state’s data shows a total of 32,343 COVID-19 cases and 732 COVID-19 related deaths. BOONE COUNTY, IA (IRN) – The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says it found a homemade pipe bomb that was set up for a delayed explosion. The bomb was safely dismantled, but officials warn there could be others. An Iowa Department of Natural Resources employee who was checking on a project found the bomb in the Harrier Marsh Wildlife Management area southeast of Ogden. FORT DODGE, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Corrections reported Tuesday that a 71-year-old inmate who had been held at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility died Monday due to complications related to COVID-19. A total of 61 inmates and five staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 at the facility. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Gov. Kim Reynolds is allocating $50 million in federal money to boost mental health services in the state, funding she says will meet increased needs during the pandemic. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Families for students who qualify for free and reduced-cost lunch programs in school will be receiving extra food benefits from the state in order to offset extra costs from coronavirus-related school shutdowns this spring. Children were considered eligible if they were enrolled in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in the last school year and were receiving free and reduced-price lunches as of March 16. Each child will receive approximately $308.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Data from the Iowa Department of Public Health shows a recent uptick in coronavirus hospitalization numbers in the state. On Tuesday, IDPH reported 273 new positive cases and 4 additional deaths. The statewide total for positive cases is now 31,929, while a total of 725 Iowans have died from the virus. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The federal government says about 6,000 Iowa businesses received loans of $150,000 or more from the Paycheck Protection Program. The list released Monday includes churches, manufacturers, car dealerships, farm-related organizations, and hospitals. Among them are firearms accessories company Brownells Inc., which received between $5 and $10 million, and King Contracting, the construction company founded by U.S. Rep. Steve King but sold to his son in 2003, which received between $150,000 and $350,000. FARGO, N.D. (IRN) – A federal judge on Monday ordered the Dakota Access pipeline shut down pending a more thorough environmental review, handing a victory to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe three years after the pipeline first began carrying oil following months of protests. The pipeline cuts across 18 counties in Iowa, passing north of Des Moines. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Sen. Chuck Grassley announced Monday that he will not attend the Republican National Convention in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. THE SOLAR SYSTEM (IRN) – Stargazers get a unique view this week of Comet C/2020 F3, more commonly known as Neowise, in the northeast sky before sunrise. The comet made a close encounter with the sun on July 3 and has survived the pass and it is now headed back out to deep space.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – The Iowa Department of Public Health data continues to show a rise in positive coronavirus cases. On Monday, IDPH reported 413 new positive cases and no additional deaths. The statewide total is now 31,656 positive cases and 721 deaths. Positive cases in Iowa had been declining since an apparent peak in early May but have started to increase since the end of June. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Four people died in a fiery overnight crash early Sunday morning in Des Moines. A Volkswagen Golf was being driven at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire. An officer was first at the scene and was able to rescue a 22-year-old woman. The four killed were all men in their early 20’s. EVANSDALE, IA (IRN) – An Arizona woman who was found buried with her stepfather in Evansdale, Iowa appears to have been killed with a sledgehammer by her boyfriend, according to KCRG-TV. The bodies of 28-year-old Elissa Landry and 45-year-old David Batten were found buried in her Subaru Forester in May. Waterloo police arrested 24-year-old Mitchell Mincks and charged him with murder. MUSCATINE, IA (IRN) – The mayor of Muscatine issued a city wide face covering mandate Sunday. There are exceptions for eating, exercising outdoors, and other situations. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – Cedar Rapids Police and Fire responded to a large house fire on Sunday morning. While the home was destroyed, there were no serious injuries, and firefighters managed to pull a family dog out of the home safely.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Department of Public Health data continues to show an increase in positive coronavirus cases in the state. On Saturday, IDPH reported 567 new positive cases and 1 additional death. That brings the statewide total to 30,922 cases and 721 deaths. MANCHESTER, IA (IRN) – A 17-year-old died after drowning at Lake Delhi Friday. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call about a possible drowning around 7 p.m. Friday. The caller reported that someone had jumped into the lake and did nor resurface. The Delhi Fire Department divers located the victim, 17-year-old Teige Hunt, in about forty feet of water. LINN COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A motorcycle rider was seriously hurt Saturday afternoon after going into the ditch in Linn County. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says 61-year-old Jay Matthews of Walker was riding his bike when he left the road. He was able to crawl to the shoulder to flag down help. Matthews was taken to Mercy Medical Center with serious injuries. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Iowa Capitol on Saturday to deliver a letter that called for lawmakers to get rid of historical monuments on the state grounds. What statues they want removed will be named later.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Iowa Department of Public Health data continues to show an increase in positive coronavirus cases in the state. On Saturday, IDPH reported 567 new positive cases and 1 additional death. That brings the statewide total to 30,922 cases and 731 deaths. CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (IRN) – A former Cedar Rapids Jefferson softball star was arrested and charged, along with a retired homicide detective, with murder in connection with a 1999 killing of a Jacksonville Florida man. KCRG-TV reports Melissa Schafer, 50, was arrested in Jefferson City, Missouri Thursday. Her ex-husband, William Baer, who is a former homicide detective in Jacksonville was arrested the same day in Florida. DNA evidence linked the two to the murder of Saad Kawaf, who owned a convenience store. Kawaf was stabbed and killed when a man and woman attacked him in his driveway and then tied up his wife in their home, stealing about $30,000. Police now say Baer and Shafer were those attackers. CHICAGO, IL (IRN) – An Iowa Central Community College student-athlete was killed in a Chicago shooting. The victim, Jacquice Baylock, was a sophomore and a member of the Triton football team. Baylock, 18, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and later died. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A private helicopter crashed near the Des Moines Airport Friday night. One person was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
