DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – One person has been seriously injured in a crash involving about 30 vehicles on Interstate Highway 80 near Altoona today, according to WHO-TV. The wreck happened around 11 a.m. east of the east mixmaster and just before U.S. Highway 65. A snow squall blowing through the metro caused slippery roads across central Iowa and law enforcement agencies are responding to dozens of crashes. RIVERDALE, IA (IRN) – An eastern Iowa man has been charged with first-degree murder for a shooting that killed his nephew. The Quad-City Times reports that 51-year-old Brian Francisco Duque, of Riverdale, is being held without bond at Scott County Jail. Authorities were called to a house shortly before 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Sheriff’s deputies attempted to revive 32-year-old Terry Warner, but he had already died from his wounds. Duque was arguing with Warner, who also lived at the house. Duque allegedly grabbed a 9-millimeter handgun from his bedroom and shot Warner once. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A man was arrested in a Des Moines home Saturday night for the U.S. military. KCCI-TV reports the Des Moines police received a tip that Jakeb Lacey, 21, was in the home. Lacey was booked on suspicion of military desertion and has no bail for a felony warrant. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Former congressman Berkley Bedell has died. The former Iowa representative suffered a stroke in Naples, Florida. He was 98 years old. Bedell is remembered for his leadership in politics and business, say presidential candidates, family and friends of the late congressman. Bedell was born in Spirit Lake in 1921, attended Iowa State University and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. In 1975, Bedell was elected as a Democrat to Iowa’s 6th District. He served in the House until 1987. IOWA CITY, IA (IRN) – Former University of Iowa athletic director Bump Elliott has died. Elliott was a star halfback for Michigan, winning the Big Ten’s MVP award in 1947. Elliott became Michigan’s coach in 1959 and led the Wolverines for 10 seasons, a tenure that included a Rose Bowl win in 1964. Elliott was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. He was 94. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Hawkeye and Cyclone fans will be purchasing flights for the bowl games announced Sunday. Iowa is headed to San Diego to play the University of Southern California on Dec. 27 at the Holiday Bowl. Iowa State is going to Orlando, Florida, to play in the Camping World Bowl against Notre Dame on Dec. 28.

URBANDALE, IA (IRN) – KCCI-TV reports it took crews several hours to remove a car from the Walgreens in Urbandale after a driver slammed into the building. No one was injured. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Officials at a Des Moines zoo say a 3-month-old seal pup born there recently died. Blank Park Zoo officials say the pup, born August 20 and named “Lucy,” died on November 24. A news release issued by the zoo said a necropsy showed Lucy died after suffering from “failure to thrive.” That means she wasn’t processing enough calories to survive. ANKENY, IA (IRN) – An Ankeny man is charged with illegal hunting for allegedly shooting and killing trumpeter swans. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, 28-year-old Loai Abdulal shot and killed six trumpeter swans at Paul Errington Marsh on Friday. When confronted by a DNR officer, the suspect stated that he thought the swans were geese. Abdulal is charged with six counts of illegal taking of a non-protected game. If convicted, he will face a $1,500 civil penalty for each trumpeter swan. SIOUX CITY, IA (IRN) – Joe Dolincheck threw three touchdown passes and Morningside College’s defense forced a decisive fumble in the closing seconds to lead the Mustangs past Grand View University 21-16 Saturday in the NAIA FCS semifinals. Morningside (13-0) advances to the title game for the second year in a row, and extends its winning streak to 28 games. The Mustangs will face Marian on December 21 in Grambling, Louisiana.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – An officer involved shooting has sent one suspect to the hospital and another is in custody. WHO-TV reports Clive Police Department officers attempted to pull over a gray Dodge Charger for a traffic violation at approximately 2:30 a.m. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, sped away, but lost control and crashed. Two suspects then fled on foot. One suspect pulled out a pistol and the officer fired his handgun, striking the suspect. Medical personnel were called and sent the suspect to the hospital. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The condition of the suspect is unknown at this time. The second suspect was apprehended shortly after. BREMER COUNTY, IA (IRN) – A Tripoli woman is facing a felony charge for the suspicious death of a dependent adult in May. Debra Kleppe, 56, is charged with non-support of a dependent adult in the death of Sylvia Schwerin, 77, of Sumner. Schwerin suffered accidental burns that contributed to her death that were never treated. WASHINGTON, DC (IRN) – An outside group founded by top political aides to Sen. Joni Ernst has worked closely with the Iowa Republican to raise money and boost her reelection prospects, a degree of overlap that potentially violates the law. WHO-TV reports Iowa Values, a political nonprofit that is supposed to be run independently, was co-founded in 2017 by Ernst’s longtime consultant, Jon Kohan. It shares a fundraiser, Claire Holloway Avella, with the Ernst campaign. DUBUQUE, IA (IRN) – City of Dubuque Mayor Roy Buol is calling for an investigation into Councilman Jake Rios for releasing information shared in closed session meetings. In early November, Rios released documents giving insight into why some city council members wanted to fire Dubuque City Manager Mike Van Milligen. Among those documents were audio recordings. Buol says Iowa Code bans releasing recordings of closed sessions. GRINNELL, IA (IRN) – Six Democratic presidential candidates took the stage in Grinnell Friday taking questions directly from farmers. The candidates included Sen. Amy Kobuchar, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Tom Steyer, John Delaney, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Corey Booker. Topics included climate change, trade, small farm struggles, and more.

ANKENY, IA (IRN) – An Ankeny business owner was arrested Wednesday for allegedly selling products containing cannabidiol, or CBD, while unlicensed by the state, the first charge of its kind in Polk County, according to the county attorney’s office. Ankeny police arrested Lacie Navin, 33, of Des Moines at her business, Your CBD Store. LU VERNE, IA (IRN) – A Coralville man faces a murder charge for a deadly bank robbery, according to KGAN-TV. 35-year-old Valentino Williams is also charged with robbery. He’s behind bars in the Kossuth County jail. Police say he shot a 43-year-old woman outside of the Security State Bank in Lu Verne yesterday morning before the bank opened. Bank employee Jessica Weishaar, of Algona, died at the scene. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines man is in Polk County Jail on charges stemming from a fatal crash on I-235 in November. KCCI-TV reports police charged 23-year-old Devin Russell Smith with one count of homicide by vehicle — drag racing in connection with the death of 22-year-old Dimitrious Galvan. Galvan was thrown from his vehicle and died after losing control and crashing. Their vehicles reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. BETTENDORF, IA (IRN) – Iowa congressional candidate Bobby Schilling has fired his campaign political coordinator. WQAD-TV reports the blowback comes after an immigration forum at a church in Bettendorf on Monday that featured a far-right activist with links to white nationalists. Schilling, a Republican candidate for Iowa’s 2nd District, fired his campaign field director Michael Sisco, after it became clear to him that Sisco allowed a far-right activist to speak at the forum. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Des Moines police officer was turning right at a red light when the officer hit and injured a pedestrian Thursday, according to WHO-TV. The woman suffered minor injuries. She’s expected to be okay.

DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – Des Moines police are investigating after a person was stabbed in the neck this morning. KCCI-TV reports a suspect took off after the stabbing, but is now in custody. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Blood was visible on the outside of the home. CEDAR FALLS, IA (IRN) – A shooting killed one person in Cedar Falls on Wednesday night, according to KCRG-TV. Officers responded to a call of shots fired and found a man dead in an apartment who had been shot. The suspects left the scene before officers arrived. MOLINE, IL (IRN) – A Davenport woman has been sentenced to spend more than a decade in prison after being found guilty in connection with the traffic crash death of a Milan, Illinois woman. WQAD-TV reports Amy Taylor, age 28, was one of three people charged in an incident where a stolen van crashed and killed 51-year-old Tammy Loos in March of 2019. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A 7-year-old boy is safe after someone stole a vehicle while he was asleep inside Wednesday. KCCI-TV reports a black 1999 Dodge 15000 was stolen around 8:30 p.m. Authorities were able to locate the vehicle and child around 9 p.m. He’s OK, but no suspects are in custody. DES MOINES, IA (IRN) – A Beaverdale couple is fighting food insecurity from their front yard, thanks to what they say was a divine intervention. WHO-TV reports homeowner Megan Ries says, “we’re really strong Christians and we felt God’s nudge,” about what prompted her and her husband to set up a tiny free food pantry. The pantry opened for business last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. It’s stocked with non-perishable food items and personal hygiene items. Passersby are asked to take what they need and leave what they can.
